Gervonta Davis v Ryan Garcia 4/22
Does it confirm who holds the key to becoming the next boxer to crosses over and become a future household name? or is it just a bit too early for all that?
From Insider (I am not even going to go into the ALI comparison made;D..no...no) -
A 21-year-old American boxer says he's one win away from being this generation's Muhammad Ali.
Ryan Garcia, a fast-rising athlete who is boxing for the Los Angeles-based Golden Boy Promotions fight firm, is competing in the absurdly-competitive lightweight division.
Backed by Oscar de la Hoya, himself once renowned for being a boxing phenom with fast hands, Garcia is unbeaten in 20 professional fights.
His last victory was so brutal he bounced his opponent's head off the canvas with a left hook knockdown, prompting the industry to say: "A new star is born."
There are many viable rivals in the 135-pound division for Garcia, as Vasyl Lomachenko, Teofimo Lopez, and Devin Haney all compete at that weight limit.

Re: Is Ryan Garcia vs Gervonta Davies a megafight?
Ryan's a good kid, but typical of the new generation of young stars whose self-image and talk have already lapped their accomplishments... twice.
Just beginning to make a splash and already comparing himself to Muhammad Ali.
Oh yeah..... Davis vs Garcia would definitely be a huge fight. Which translated into boxing reality means they'll posture... call each other out... and avoid each other for several years until something happens on the way to the bank.... or we just lose interest.
Actually, I'm anxious for someone... anyone... to knock Davis flat.
-
Re: Is Ryan Garcia vs Gervonta Davies a megafight?
Nowhere near a mega fight, but a fight that would for sure boost Garcia if he wins. If Davis wins, I think most people would just assume that Garcia was a bit of a hype job.
-
Re: Is Ryan Garcia vs Gervonta Davies a megafight?
Tank hasn’t looked that great in his last few fights. Very hittable. If he doesn’t get back in tip top shape and motivated, someone with a punch will drop him hard.

Re: Is Ryan Garcia vs Gervonta Davies a megafight?
I don't blame fighters for saying they are the next this or that, only meant to get the name out there. No fighter ever squandered their career because they self promoted to much.
Obviously a great fight and I think it definitely has the right components to be a mega fight down the line(clash of demographics, styles, personalities etc) but to early to call it one for now I'd guess. Im not one of those "let it marinate " types and would be happy to see this made, but it probably could be a lot bigger. I don't exactly have my finger on the pulse of what's popular or anything, so maybe these guys are both bigger than I realize, just thibking that they could really get some big hype through social media and whatnot.

Re: Is Ryan Garcia vs Gervonta Davies a megafight?
Yes it's a mega fight for any "nerd" boxing fan (not fanagers obsessed with whoever makes the most coin). Garcia, Tank, Haney and Teo is the most exciting young quartet in any division.

oscar is now talking teo the takeover & king ry says he's still focused on tank. the hamster wheel keeps turning

Classic stuff right here. :D
It's a 9-minute video, but you only need to watch the first 4:40 :D
My favorite part (out of many)....
".... if it only takes one day for you to move on, then you never wanted the fight to begin with..." :D
But the truth of the matter is... PauperRy and his manager Fishnets want neither (Tank or Lopez).

Maxi (frigging) Hughes... I'll just leave it that. :D

"Oscar De La Hoya Does A 180 On Gervonta Davis Vs. Ryan Garcia Negotiations"
On multiple occasions, lightweight star Ryan Garcia (23-0, 19 KOs) has been accused of publicly announcing big fights and using the announcements as a way to stay relevant in the public eye. Garcia would reveal he’s fighting a big named boxer in the 135-pound division, and then later down the road; he would fight nobody at all or a lesser opponent.
After his January 2021 win over Luke Campbell, Garcia called out Gervonta “Tank” Davis. A few weeks later, Garcia switched up and declared he would face Manny Pacquiao in an exhibition match. The exhibition turned into an official match, and then the bout didn’t happen at all, as Pacquiao and Garcia never faced each other inside of the ring.
Instead of fighting Manny Pacquiao, Garcia had scheduled a clash between he and Javier Fortuna, but Garcia withdrew from the match in order to deal with his mental health issues. In October 2021, Ryan Garcia and JoJo Diaz were scheduled to face each other, but a week later, Garcia suffered a hand injury, and the fight was postponed.
Two months later, Garcia once again called out Gervonta Davis and accused Davis of fighting a C-Level fighter. After his victory over Isaac Cruz, Davis addressed Garcia’s challenge during his post-fight press conference. “He’s an Instagram fighter. We don’t worry about him. He’s a pretty girl. He just likes to talk.”
Fast forward to the present day, and once again, Ryan Garcia is publicly challenging Gervonta Davis, but Davis, Devin Haney, and Teofimo Lopez have given Garcia the label of a person who is all talk and no action. Garcia’s rivals have caught on to his tactics, and they have vowed to disregard anything Garcia verbally says or posts on social media.
Garcia seems adamant about finally fighting Gervonta Davis, but it appears another member of Golden Boy is pulling the switch-up maneuver. After the Vergil Ortiz vs. Michael McKinson weigh-in, Oscar De La Hoya did an interview with FightHub TV to give an update on the Davis vs. Garcia negotiations.
“Everybody is eager about that fight. That’s the only fight that Ryan wants. Umm… that’s the only fight that Tank wants. Look, we’re talking. We’re talking, so it’s a great start. To get to talk to the other side is a great start, so we want the fight,” De La Hoya stated.
Approximately twenty-four hours later, De La Hoya switched up like an NFL quarterback calling an audible. After Ortiz knocked out McKinson, De La Hoya did an interview with ESNews and addressed the status of the negotiations. “Hey, we are trying to get a hold of Tank’s side. We don’t know who to talk to. Nobody picks up their phone; nobody calls back. I feel they are playing games, so I’m moving on, and I’m going to Teofimo’s fight next week.”
Boxing fans have witnessed the callouts and bold predictions, but we have yet to see Ryan Garcia step into the ring to battle any of the elite fighters. Garcia has expressed his desire to fight once again in 2022. With five months left to go in the calendar year, hopefully, Garcia and Golden Boy can send out a contract instead of sending out guarantees and public challenges.

Re: Is Ryan Garcia vs Gervonta Davies a megafight?
Ryan is a self absorbed little tart but should Tank and Garcia make a fight..they won't..not gonna happen..I'd pay under 40 bucks and a cheese sandwich for it. Pretty clear Tank isn't interested in the highschool hijinks and doesn't count social media followers as actual friends, but Tank needs a huge fight. Huge in decent threat, huge in familiar name (familiar for what is debatable) and another that would sell-push the buy rates up. Forget that clowny Rolly Romero stuff. That was a step backwards for Tank who is already 28 and ten years in. Shit or get off the pot son. That said I think Tank would smoke Ryan before the late rounds. Davis would feast on his defensive lapses. But alas..that fight isn't happening.

i doubt the fight happens either, both guys are just using each other for promotion. if the fight happens great, if not tank needs to give isaac a rematch, ryan has options at one forty & one thirty five

if it was a stay busy leading into a tank fight in december i can understand, would have been three fights for this year with tank to come at the end of the year. i miss that sort of activity

Yeh totally see that too. I just like quality over quantity. I mean fight prior to Fortuna was literally his stay busy but guess Hearn tends to lean heavy with guys across the pond to come get pounded out.
Different promotions so another that won't happen but stylistically he and Michel Rivera would be nice imo

https://www.boxingscene.com/haney-i-...fought--166948
"Haney: I Don't Really Take Ryan Garcia Too Serious; Was My Mandatory & We Never Fought"
In fact, Haney doesn’t expect Garcia to follow through on any of the challenges he has issued publicly. The undefeated, fully unified lightweight champion considers Garcia’s talk on social media and elsewhere to be just that – talk.
“I don’t really take Garcia too serious,” Haney told BoxingScene.com. “He says a lot. The guy said he was fighting Pacquiao, and that never happened. So, I can’t really take him too serious.”

"Gervonta Davis: Garcia's Not A Man Of His Word, Fight Is Possible – I’ll Stay Quiet Till Deal Is Done"
“I haven’t been going back and forth with Ryan because we all know he’s not a man of his word, but I do know it’s a possibility of the fight happening. So I rather stay quiet till the deal is locked. Nothing means anything now,” Davis wrote on social media.
“Yea, we can make it happen to say the least. It’s already locked in if people do what’s right, ya know.”
In a more cryptic statement, the Baltimore-bred Davis (27-0, 25 KOs) wrote: “And another thing – tell homie to stop talking for me.”
Haney, Tank, Teofimo Lopez....
They all concur. ChickenRy is nothing but an Instagram hype job. He talks a lot of shit... but nothing happens. Ever since he babbled about fighting Pacquaio in an exhibition, I knew this kid was soft and fragile. Fishnets says he's "moving on" from Tank because he doesn't want to see ChickenRy get starched like Santa Cruz was. Fishnets knows as soon as he puts ChickenRy in with any of the above mentioned three... the hype train is over and ChickenRy's gonna have to find himself another line of work. Which shouldn't be too hard, because he's already got a million fawning, casual fan followers on social media.

Re: Is Ryan Garcia vs Gervonta Davies a megafight?
king ry fought guys like vergil ortiz, devin haney & shakur in the amateurs, i think if it was purely down to the fighters they would have no issue fighting. unfortunately there is too much business & posturing involved these days, a side b side nonsense, promoter politics, networks. promoters are too scared of their fighters losing their zero & having to rebuild, while some fans are quick to squawk about a fighter being exposed after taking a loss. i don't mind fighters taking a loss if they are attempting to challenge themselves, how they come back is how i tend to assess them

unfortunately with some fighters fighting once or twice a year it doesn't leave a lot of room for either quality or quantity. if ryan can't get tank this year then i'd like to see his team try to revisit isaac cruz, if a fight of that level can't be made then take a maxi hughes level guy, who is on a little win streak, with the intention of fighting the jo jo v camaron winner in the early part of next year

Re: Is Ryan Garcia vs Gervonta Davies a megafight?
While I agree KingRy is a punk declining his mandatory spot against Haney we have to be fair and say that Tank and Loma have also declined to activate their mandatory positions. Just saying the fact

Yup. And I still believe Garcia is more hype than fight. However, I do realize he has an amazing check-left hook moving backward that is TO DIE FOR!!

i think ryan & devin were split evenly in the amateurs, i'd like to see them fight as pro's. i remember after the luke campbell fight, with devin in the crowd & ryan bringing up devin & asking the audience who he should fight next & the crowd was yelling we want tank. unfortunately neither fight has emerged. i credit devin for doing everything possible to unify the undisputed title & george who could have milked a voluntary defense or two at home first. since the luke campbell fight ryan has had his mental health issues & is now two fights back in to it, hopefully he can continue his momentum going forward. some people just have tunnel vision for certain fighters & neglect others who have done or are doing the same thing

It never was a megafight. No one was talking about Garcia at anytime until he and Golden Boy started to jump on Tank's hype.

Not a mega fight but a great matchup. Won't happen though.

Truthfully ? As we have seen this wk with the Nury Martinez situation most hispanics hate black ppl. So I'll be supporting Tank

Another nugget of wisdom from our resident racist.
Ridiculous comment aside... I'll be supporting Tank too. Ryan is an Instagram-princess, mega-hype job... and he's about to get his pretty boy ass handed to him by Tank.

Re: Is Ryan Garcia vs Gervonta Davies a megafight?
https://www.boxingnews24.com/2022/10...-getting-done/
Article talks about some of the factors that could still derail the fight. I hope not. I hope to hell it happens.
My favorite part of the article:
"If Tank doesn’t fight Ryan (23-0, 19 KOs) now, he could miss out on his chance to be the first one to defeat the popular social media star before he gets worked over by the top 140-pounders.
Once Ryan begins fighting quality light welterweights, his unbeaten record is likely to come to a grinding halt because those guys hit a lot harder than the lesser opposition that he’s been facing thus far."
:D
Damn good point. Here's hoping the fight gets made, so Tank can flatten Ryan "Santa Cruz style." :D
-
Re: Is Ryan Garcia vs Gervonta Davies a megafight?
sounds like the networks might kill this fight as well
-
Re: Is Ryan Garcia vs Gervonta Davies a megafight?
Between the 2 of them they have 1 real championship fight with a championship level fighter at the fighters natural weight. So no, it isn’t close to a mega fight. But somehow it will sell better than Loma/Haney, that’s a reflection on society

Re: Is Ryan Garcia vs Gervonta Davies a megafight?
GERVONTA DAVIS may face jail time after pleading guilty to four traffic offences in relation to a hit-and-run.
But the boxing ace WILL get to fight Ryan Garcia on April 15 as his sentencing hearing is not until May 5.
Davis, 28, allegedly crashed his Lamborghini into another car in November 2020 after running a red light.
Four people were treated in hospital for injuries, and Davis was charged with 14 various traffic violations in March 2021.
The American had been hoping to avoid jail time after accepting a plea deal last September.
But this was thrown out following a plea from one of the victims who was pregnant at the time of the incident.
However, a new plea deal has been approved, with Davis admitting his guilt to four offences related to the hit-and-run.
Davis will discover if he faces jail time at a later hearing on May 5.
And it means his anticipated April 15 bout against Garcia can go ahead.
The duo were in the finishing stages of striking a deal, with just the uncertainty of Davis’ sentencing holding up a final agreement.
But talks can now advance with Davis’ fate to be decided almost a month later.
The Baltimore-born brawler has won all 28 of his professional bouts, with 26 coming by knockout.
And he faces his toughest test yet in Garcia, 24, who is victorious in all of his 23 fights.

Looks like it’s on. Definitely a fight to look forward to. Contrasting styles and characters. This is what Boxing is all about. Let’s hope we see more matchups like this.
