Vergil Ortiz Jr v Maurice Hooker 3/20

Looks like they'll tee it up on March 20th in Texas over on Dazn. When we think next era welterweights and the needed turn over at 147 there are two guys who pop in my head right off..Ortiz Jr and Jaron Ennis. Really a good opportunity for the young gun against Hooker here. Hooker is respectable solid and confident but making his first go at full 147 and will quickly find himself under severe pressure just 1 round of a fight removed from the brutal Ramirez tko war and loss. Biggest test for Vergil for sure but his inside body work causes nightmares. I have a feeling this is the beginning of a solid breakout run for him. With the tiring PBC 147 roulette wheel and Spence and Crawford finding it easier though less lucrative to fight on social media, 147 needs to be stirred up!

Was hoping a decent undercard would shape up but not so much. Still though looking forward to one of the best prospects in the sport. Just read that Ennis has signed to fight Lipinets, another tough test for new class of 147.

Have to figure that is much harder for matchmakers, managers and promoters to put together decent cards from a shallower pool of active fighters. Especially on events with little or no fans.

Not that it was ever a consistent habit for promoters prepandemic either.

I think it may be a bit of Dazn doing the quantity over quality thing a bit too. Yeh we're in a transition but many of the State side cards are similar. They also seem to over simplify the local fan demographic. Last week with the Estrada v Chocolatito rematch. Exact same State, Texas, one of the few with large fan compacity now and other than the main events the other matches are really patchwork. They could have done something nuts like combine known fighters maybe and not put that crowd to sleep until the main kicked off. Hey I don't mind female boxing at all but now we get another as co main..and it's a 105 lb strawweight too ;D.

Bloody ell sounds like De la hiya is go to NG to make an in ring comeback :S. Get him in v canelo if alvarez loses he has to resign with golden boy

In the opener cruiserweight Tristan Kalkreuth blows out Dustin Long at 1:18 of the first who was taken out on a stretcher. Next is Marcelino Nicolas Lopez 36-2-1 out of Argentina v Jairo Lopez 25-11-4. Nicolas Lopez has taken this on one weeks notice and looks like he is out of the Frank Bruno physique fan club.

Jairo 'don't call me Gyro' did well to rally back after getting dropped in 2nd.

Down again in 3rd. Nino Lopez hits him in the back of the head down there. They can stop this one he's reacting badly.

Jairo out on the attack and dropped again in 4th. looked like a push maybe.

He ain't acting right ref needs to pull him out, down again! Jairo is by himself and forced to no mas finally.

Lopez was always going to win that fight.

Seneisa Estrada should definitely be in stiffer test here than her last that ended in just 7 seconds over that substitute teacher or something.

Boxing is a weird sport. Ortiz on paper has been a ' world champ' for what a straight 10 undefeated yrs now and the entire fight she was completely dominated, beat up and labeled underdog from the opening bell.

Nice to see them hugging in the ring after one of them has given the other a lumpy face. Strangely erotic.

Nice tightly packed live and loud crowd first time in a while. All those masks worn like clip on bowties. Yep. You'll never hear pre recorded 'crowds' BOOO an opponent like that :-X.

Fun 1st Ortiz compact shelled up defense dipping head coming in and real solid shots. Hooker moving well keeping it long but dug hard to Ortiz body end of round.

Tight 2nd Hooker may have snuck that one but Ortiz lands clean along ropes to end round.

Dazn is currently doing it's freeze circle refresh and wait thing.

Nice left hook appeared to stand Ortiz up at very end of 3rd :-X. Ortiz needs some variety coming in.

Ortiz is thinking out loud, stuck on approach a bit and Hooker ripped a nice 4,5 combo off!

Hooker owned the 4th. Ended round walking Ortiz backwards and Ortiz making faces. Very sharp round Hooker

Ortiz feeling this heavy on the front foot. Throwing wind up and long bombs. Nice pressure end of round though and sunk a few to Hookers ribs that he took back to the corner. Ortiz salvaged that round with power late.

Absolutely brutal round that one. Mid ring exchanges and Hooker goes down ugly off upper straight right bricks. No slack in Hooker survives round and comes out slugging

Ortiz with the tko after another knockdown. Arm of Hooker may be tweeked too. Brutal finisher.

Looked like hooker wanted out at the end there and I don't blame him fighting Ortiz looks painful to fight.

The guy can punch no doubt about it. Biggest takeaway from tonight is Oscar is clearly in great shape and could definitely make a comeback if he wanted to.

Hooker v the crowd was pretty funy

Man I like Ortiz a lot but Crawford is some deep waters now. Walk, run, then sprint comes to mind. Then again Crawford is in dire need of anyone right now

I didn't notice too much booing either :S... I think hooker realised he was well beaten and was having a tough time accepting it.

Not sure Hooker looked like a 10/1 outsider. He had some great moments, success in spurts and showed that Oritz Jr is not that difficult to hit. Congratulations to Oritz on his finishing instincts but I think he may be surprised with how easily Crawford or Spence will tag him all night long. He has the power to get himself out of trouble though so either of those fights could be barnstormers.

Gotta agree I don't doubt Ortiz would take the fight tomorrow if possible but a similar straight line ear muff approach may not go to well at this early stage with Crawford similar Hooker style. But hey Bud needs a fight, both under Arums roof and they're chatting it up so let's see. Seen some raking Ortiz for basically showing damage from a good test and saying it was a broken hand that ko'd Hooker but he was feeling all of that body damage. Ortiz has it all in front of him, it'll be fun watching what comes next.
