Canelos gloves - "Everlast MX" doing serious damage
2 of Canelos last 3 opponents have suffered Nasty injuries.
Amir Khan said it was like being hit with a baseball bat when Canelo hit him and that the horsehair padding slides back up the glove exposing the knuckles.
What Khan said in 2020 -
Khan, who opted to wear a different type of Everlast glove, told FightHype: "Every glove is different. When I fought Canelo, he had the Everlast horsehair gloves on.
"When I put my hand in, it was like pushing to the wall, but you’re going to damage your hand as well.
“They were solid. It was like being hit with a baseball bat. The foam padding ones, the shape always stays the same. With the horsehair, it fades more towards the back of the hand.
"So that way, your knuckles are more visible. Without padding in the way, that’s going to put more pressure on your knuckle. So you’re going to be hit with a bare hand.
Canelo’s gloves hand nothing in them – Khan
“You’ve got Grant, you’ve got Rivals, you’ve got Everlast,” said Khan about the different glove types.’ You’ve got all kinds of different types of gloves. Every glove is different and made in a different way. Nowadays, you can talk to the owner, and say, ‘Listen, I want a knockout glove. Make sure the padding is more on the wrist and not on the knuckle…I can call up and say ‘I’ve got bad hands.
“I need more padding on the right hand,’ and he’ll say, ‘No problem.’ So imagine someone saying, ‘Look, take the padding away from the hand and put it more on the top half. They should have one glove [for everyone]. That’s why they have these brutal knockouts happening.
“When you’re fighting someone, and you know they’re wearing a certain glove, you know what their game plan is. You’ve got guys that aren’t really punchers, and they’re going to wear the smaller Reyes gloves. You think this guy is going to try and knock you out. I’m going to have to be smart in this fight and be prepared.
“Then you’ve got Canelo, who is wearing the MX gloves, and they’ve got nothing in them. I knew that he was just looking for that one big shot. You know the mentality from the type of gloves they’re wearing. Try it next time. When you see a fighter, look at the type of gloves they have, and that’ll tell you about his game plan,” said Khan.
Canelos smashed Saunders eye socket to bits with one punch and Callum Smith suffered a detached bicep after Canelo purposely targeted his arm.
Smith -
"I said to Joe in round one, 'He's aiming for my arm.' Every right hook he was throwing, he was going for my arm.
"And then I think I said to Joe in round four or something, 'My arm is f***ed.""

Re: Canelos gloves - "Everlast MX" doing serious damage
The gloves are not exclusive for Alvarez. Khan, Smith and Saunders had the option of using those same gloves. They declined. Either way it wouldn't of matter. Khan would of still got knocked the fuck out. Smith would of still have that deer in the headlights look and Saunders would of still quit
-
Re: Canelos gloves - "Everlast MX" doing serious damage
Problem is not every fighter can use them, if a fighters got brittle hands they're not gonna pick them.
To a heavy hitter though they are clearly pretty devastating in terms of the damage you can inflict.

I don't think I've ever heard of Smith, Saunders or Khan having brittle hands. I know of Khan's brittle chin. But hands? That's a first

Re: Canelos gloves - "Everlast MX" doing serious damage
Golovkin also wears horse hair gloves, I don't see the problem with it, they are approved and if the person wearing them have iron fists and can take the damage then I say more power to them.
Also there is the argument that heavier padded gloves would just cause sustained beatings to the noggin which would be just as dangerous.
And although I dislike Canelo immensely, I wish he would have landed that punch in Khan without any gloves at all, now that would have been fun to watch.

Re: Canelos gloves - "Everlast MX" doing serious damage
In fairness Khan has often reacted as if struck with a baseball bat when caught :-X. Bit low ball way for them to imply wrong doing while the same completely 'legal' means available to all fighters basically because they couldn't measure up.

Re: Canelos gloves - "Everlast MX" doing serious damage
Let's use some perspective. As brutal as boxing is, I would separate fractured orbital bones from the rest of injuries we've become accustomed to see. Fight-ending gashes, broken noses, bumps and bruises galore... those are always gonna be a natural part of the sport. But broken eye sockets? Damn... anyone who is faulted for not fighting through one of those is being thrown to the lions, IMHO.
Along with the myriad of other things boxing needs to fix, I'd say the disparity in boxing gloves is one of them. Why should the choice of gloves include those which pose a greater risk of injuries such as broken eye sockets? Let's be realistic. When Pacquiao broke Margarito's eye socket back in 2010, it wasn't surprising given the amount of punches Pac landed on Margarito's face. But if Saunders was indeed gaining momentum in the fight until BAM... one punch broke an eye socket, well...
Khan shouldn't even be involved in the conversation (or talking about it). Canelo would've knocked Khan out had he been wearing pillows for gloves. It was like the elephant waiting for the annoying mosquito to land before swatting it to oblivion.
But differences in gloves shouldn't help increase the chances of broken orbital bones. Everyone has to wear standard issue helmets and pads for contact sports such as American football. Why then, shouldn't boxers be forced to wear standard issue gloves designed to lessen the possibility of severe injuries like broken eye sockets? Again, in some cases it's gonna happen. Pac beat Margarito's face like a drum at a concert... and the resulting injuries were bound to happen.

Agreed , I know for a fact a large blue bottle fly once landed on the face of Khan and he had to take an eight count.
He is not the man to ask about punch resistance.

This pretty much sums up the point I'm trying to make.
As we've seen in 2 of his 3 last fights allowing a fighter like Cabello to wear gloves with not much padding over the knuckle is causing bad injuries to his opponents, clearly more so than f he wore a foam padded glove.
He wasnt exactly landing loads of punches on Saunders either, would his eye socket be fractured multiple times after 1 uppercut if Canelo had foam padded gloves on ?
Seriously doubt it.

Re: Canelos gloves - "Everlast MX" doing serious damage
This would explain how he is getting so much punch power whilst moving up the weights which is unnatural. Canelo was not this devastating as a light middle or even middleweight yet he is stopping/injuring bigger world class fighters. With the judges already in his pocket this advantage makes him unbeatable.

Re: Canelos gloves - "Everlast MX" doing serious damage
Just done a bit of digging and it turns out that Canelo no longer wears the Everlast glove but uses the "No Boxing, No Life" horsehair glove.
Canelos trainer Eddy Reynoso even owns the company, if that's not a massive conflict of interest and a serious cause for concern then I don't know what is.
I also discovered that it's still not illegal to "stack your gloves" in Nevada and Texas (the 2 places Canelo fights)
This is from boxrec
Stacking is similar to plaster of Paris in that when a fighter starts sweating the extra layer of gauze starts to harden. For this reason you’re only allowed one layer of gauze which purpose is to protect the knuckles. Having 2 layers of gauze with tape in between creates a layer of bulk to the fist. It’s going to provide extra impact even when wearing gloves.
Add a stacked hand wrap to a horsehair glove (designed by your own trainer of all people) and you may as well be hitting someone bare knuckles.
All the above is fact and clearly dodgy as fuck, we already know Canelo walks an extremely thin line in terms of cheating, PEDS, catch-weight and rehydration clauses.
Not saying he wouldn't knock out or stop these guys but it's the injuries he's causing that is a big worry.

Re: Canelos gloves - "Everlast MX" doing serious damage
Everyone has been complaining about gloves over the last two years in boxing now. Something is up with it and the "authorities" should look closely into it. jmo..
Also another trend I have noticed is a lot of these fighters are coming out sickly and lethargic. The last lethargic and sickly looking guy was Povetkin v Whyte in their second bout. That was not a strong and fit Povetkin. Something is up there.
Even so, I have been noticing more carefully since Stiverne complained about being poisoned in the first Wilder fight. You could see something was not right with the man. Same thing with Wilder v Fury 2, you could clearly see Wilder was weakened.

Good info, thanks for sharing.
You read stuff like this.... you feel even more strongly about the need to standardize gloves in boxing.
C'mon... boxers are finely tuned athletes with individual attributes which make them entertaining to watch. Some are master boxers... others are devastating punchers.
Differences in gloves shouldn't be added as part of the equation.
What you mention, in addition to what @Master brings up regarding Canelo's sudden ability to damage bigger fighters... should at least give people pause.

Re: Canelos gloves - "Everlast MX" doing serious damage
glove controversy's are nothing new. felix tito had to rewrap against bernard. fighters should wear the same gloves & wrapping should also be uniform

As long as you're not plastering (a la Margarito), different boxing commissions allow different types of hand wrapping. Not to say that couldn't be standardized also... but part of the wrapping technique is to protect fighters' hands, some of which are more brittle than others. Gloves though... there's no reason why they should be different. A good, safe hand wrapping job coupled with standard gloves should be the norm in boxing.

Re: Canelos gloves - "Everlast MX" doing serious damage
Dunno, as ugly as it was I have a bit of a hard time faulting a guy for targeting key strengths of an opponent. I mean they're not in there to knit mittens and pour tea :-X. While slimy maybe Canelo still took one of Smiths key weapons away right off. Fighters exploit previous injuries, bruised ribs and target cuts regularly. Canelo has had silk underwear and a silver spoon in his little orange mouth since day 1 but some of this scooby doo mystery hour stuff can be said of more than a few guys. Didn't Margarito get his eye socket caved in by Manny who was also moving up and arguably hitting harder a bit. Inoue orbital fracture to Donaire. Max Baer literally knocked a poor guys brain 'loose'. Think Cotto made a jigsaw puzzle out of Paulies face too. I just think this may have happened much more than we realize but now it's on a world stage information highway with arguably the biggest name- 'attraction' in boxing. And he's a diva so that helps ;D. If there's any positive takeaway maybe it's that these are the injuries we see. Attention drawn to it. But at the end of the day after every ko loss a fighter is permanently less than before he entered the ring that night. One major factor in helping curve that would be to stop clear near mismatches ahead of time. Namely Khan being used for name sake division jumping for Canelo and Brook putting his head in the gators mouth jumping up for Golovkin.

Re: Canelos gloves - "Everlast MX" doing serious damage
I started off reading this thread thinking it's just Khan whingeing and trying to come up with yet another excuse for his crystal jaw but there definitely seems to be substance to this. I'm sure there'll be more reporting done on this in the future. The biggest draw in boxing being able to pick his own custom gloves for fights doesn't seem right but he's going to get away with it unless this blows up into a big issue at some point.

If BJS is forced to retire he should sue Canelo and that will raise the profile of this scandal.

Re: Canelos gloves - "Everlast MX" doing serious damage
Hard to tell where to draw the line.
Margarito ripped off Lujan's ear, how often does that happen? And many a fighter have had their retina detached. But the injuries that ensure me sometimes it is the fighter's power would be the thrashing Briggs took against Klitschko: a broken left orbital bone in Briggs’ face, a broken nose and torn left biceps.
A Fighter's trainer signs off on gloves.
And most important to me is that some fighters break down easier than others.
Maybe Saunders got a broke face because he finally faced a menacing puncher. Defeating Martin Murray before this title shot didn't mean he was deserving IMO over a Charlo or an Andrade. But it is what it is, Billie got to the big dance and learned the hard way.
If you can't roll with the punch, you're probably gonna bare the brunt of the punch. Perfect punch to do it- as he was in the perfect position for maximum impact now that I've seen it.
Side note- I felt that James Kirkland was a pretty decent puncher, not menacing, but he could bang- But in the ring with Canelo one could see a difference in punching power.
A big difference, not sure why it was so apparent against Kirkland, but not Mayweather other than how Floyd positioned himself when he did get hit.

gunboat smith said he ripped off jess willard's ear with a punch: "So in the tenth round I hit him with one of my right hands, but it was on the ear. Tore his ear right off. That hushed him up for the rest of the fight. The blood was running down, and oh God, I, of course, had my gloves loaded. I had insulation tape laid across my hands." he said that everybody loaded their gloves and, it was either him, or maybe it was jack sharkey, who said that after a few punches the padding in the gloves back then would thin out until there wasnt anything covering your knuckles at all. antonio margarito also ripped off sebastian lujan's ear with a punch. thats not too surprising. he was also loading his wraps. you wont usually see a fighter get his ear ripped off by a punch and i have never seen a fighter get his skull caved in by a punch. doctors described this injury as a "complete blowout" saunders face looked like it was smashed in about two inches. the bone that should be there was just gone. this is not an injury that i think you can receive from a gloved fist.

Exactly. Here we're talking about the lack of a glove causing the damage or at least a lack of padding in the knuckle area of the glove meaning the wearer can inflict more damage. It may even be that the lack of padding coupled with the resultant shape and form of the leather could be able to inflict even more damage than a bare fist.
I can see future opponents asking either for the same gloves or for both fighters to wear different gloves. With the benefit of hindsight Saunders shouldn't have focused on the size of the ring, there was a more kinetic issue he should have threatened to walk away over.

Interesting how those labeled as the biggest punchers ever (Ernie Shavers, Julian Jackson) never did such damage. For Canelo to achieve this level of power I now understand why so many questions are being raised.

Boxing is a bit like the whore who will do whatever you want for the right price. Canelo will not be held accountable, simply because he's the BIGGEST DRAW IN BOXING. Boxing... the sport desperate for attention... and will go to any lengths to get it. Even if it means looking the other way when Canelo 'roids, when Canelo uses his own "custom gloves", when Canelo gets the judges he wants... the venue he wants... the opponents he wants... WHEN he wants them. Not ONE boxer was ever bigger than the sport. Not even Ali back in the day, because those were the 60's and 70's then, and society itself was different. Yet Canelo is approaching the "bigger than boxing" territory. Not because he's that wonderful... but because the machinery that has been in place for years now has finally accomplished its goal.
So no. Canelo will not be held accountable. EVER. Anyone with any authority in boxing that even dares suggest that boxing gloves should be standardized for the safety of the boxers, will end up sleeping with the fishes.

By the time you're twenty three or four you've filled out to your full physical size and strength. At that age Alvarez was making 154. Now he's gone up two weight classes and is a stone heavier and is a wrecking machine. Definitely lots of questions can be asked about this but with him being the biggest draw in boxing and a big earner for a lot of interested parties don't expect him to be pushed into providing answers.

Re: Canelos gloves - "Everlast MX" doing serious damage
I don't think there is that many questions, he already failed a drugs test(like his previous opponent) :S......
The horsehair gloves aren't new though, are they pretty sure Mayweather tried to stop Maida a wearing them and Floyd's choice of glove were called pillows..... I think this instance might be a case of not liking who won..

Where's Saunders on this glove-gate? Has he and team filed or sought official complaint etc. I know Khan has chimed in ironically enough about being the hardest he's been hit and horse hair gloves but haven't seen what others thought. Is bit of a strange work through though. Khan the smaller very much chinnier than a BJ or Smith yet no where near the fractures or such. I can see suspicions and as a guy who has massaged and swerved some 'norms', manipulated status Canelo has put the target on his back. The horseshat he pulled with Angulo same day contract change was enough for me, but stuff like this quickly falls into accusations from the sidelines that can be washed either way to suit opinion. A lot of that these day in society. Politics, sports and so on. Next thing you know we're into Deontay Wilder territory accusing Fury of loaded gloves, the solar eclipse and blaming the weight of his socks. Maybe they can get Oscar or other former members to opine with behind the scenes knowledge as Eddie screwed them over and stole his golden goose. Would be interesting to see some proposals on unified rules and commission standard on gloves and gear but we're missing the forest through the Red wood tree a bit. That's the real reform and crooked area. We literally have States who borrow boxing commissions from other States because they don't have one. Just as we have boxers who borrow gear and cornermen. Start at the foundation of this, unified State requirements and regulation or no sanctioned events.

Saunders likely won't say anything anytime soon because it looks like sour grapes and a bit Deontay Wilder. It'll be interesting to see what future opponents have to say though. If I was fighting him next I'd be wanting him to wear a standard glove from a known manufacturer. If his last couple of opponents have gone public with their opinions you can bet everybody else in boxing has one as well. I'm sure we'll hear more about it eventually.
