Stevenson grabs Herring's belt in angry face-off
Shakur Stevenson twice grabbed the world title belt held by Jamel Herring as their face-off threatened to turn ugly ahead of Saturday's fascinating fight in Atlanta.
Unbeaten Stevenson will challenge for Herring's WBO super-featherweight championship, live on Sky Sports Main Event and Arena from 3.30am in the early hours of Sunday.
Herring held his belt over his shoulder and was twice forced to remove Stevenson's hand as his young challenger antagonistically grabbed at it.
The rivals were speaking back and forth as they intensely stared at each other while members of both teams argued loudly.
"He's nervous," shouted Herring's team towards Stevenson.
"These are your last nights with the belt, you're going into retirement," Stevenson's team shouted back at Herring.
The complicated relationship between champion and challenger stems from the gym run by trainer Brian 'Bo Mac' McIntyre, where Terence Crawford trains.
Crawford is Stevenson's mentor and McIntyre is Herring's trainer.
But Stevenson trained under McIntyre, alongside Crawford, for his previous fight with Herring in the same gym. McIntyre is now back in Herring's corner plotting to end Stevenson's undefeated streak.
Stevenson said about his relationship with Herring: "He's not my friend. I don't talk to him outside of boxing.
"If he slips up and makes any mistakes, I am going to capitalise.
"You will see a special night - my coming out party. He said he spoil it? So let's see."
Herring said: "It's not personal. I've heard worse and been through worse.
"We will put our personal feelings to the side and go to battle."
Stevenson, aged 24 and 11 years younger than Herring, is unbeaten in 16 fights and is vying for a world title in a second division.
Herring stopped Carl Frampton, and forced him into retirement, in his most recent fight.

Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
Love to see Herring pull this out but feels like a perfect canvas for Shakur to sac up and reboot career momentum a bit. Herring is the best he's faced to date and can be legit accurate puncher but those 35 yr old legs and reflexes are going to be taxed all night. Now does Shakur feel the punch early and coast it out or does he put substance to all the yapping we see so much of today and really press for it. Or maybe Jamel gets in early and Shakur falls apart like a Macys day float in a strong cross wind. Um Semper Fi :-X

Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
I know Stevenson will be favourite to win but after watching Herring stopping Frampton and hearing his story I hope he can pull off the upset.

Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
Young Holyfield goy worked a bit in 1st and comes back with that peculiar style. May have inherited some of that quality left hook too. good ko finish.

Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
Their stalling with add time on app threw me off. And if you're on cable now you just wait for Ala friggin Bama College football to end :-X. Up by 30 points sure looks like this game already has.

Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
Nico Ali Walsh gets two KDs and stops Westley in 3rd. Took more than a few right hands in 1st but finished with straight right right on sweet spot. Tons of work to do. At least Brian Kenny stayed in his seat this time ;D

Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
Hey guys. Watching the Braves-Dodgers game... but I think Xander Zayas is about to fight. Gonna be watching this one. ;D
-
Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
Only 19, Xander is. Looks pretty polished for his age.
-
Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
Zayas has really light feet and positions pretty well.
-
Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
Hope they bring him along well. He's got loads of talent.
-
Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
Been binging on sports today. ;D
Watched some of the Alabama game... saw the Xander Zayas fight... and just watched the end of the Braves' elimination of the Dodgers to get to the World Series.
Ma' man Eddie Rosario should be a lock for MVP. :)

Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
Actually takes work to spit that much personal trash about a guy the likes of Herring but Shakur playing it up. 'Babble young man babble'.
-
Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
It's taken a long time between the co-feature and the main event. :o They could've fit another fight in between.
-
Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
Feels like this one will be dictated by what happens in just the first couple of rounds. Jamel trying to talk himself into it. Nice to see official intro now includes a face on the judges!

They've really mastered the Dazn draw it out thing.

Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
Shakur in full control and looks like two different weight classes. Shakur smothering a bit but pressing for it hard here.
-
Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
Wow... the 2nd round was even more lopsided than the 1st round. Don't think Herring will make 12 rounds.
-
Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
Oh man this is like teeing off on a piƱata with a wiffle ball bat in 3rd. Like the pressure from Shakur
-
Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
Like Herring in 4th. Shakur 1-2 flashy at end but first time Herring had both hands moving.
-
Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
Herring really does do better when he walks forward... just like the commentators mentioned. Still losing by shutout, though.
-
Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
Left eye of Herring going bad . Nice chopping left caught Shakur as he jumped in but little else. Real physical inside round that one
-
Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
Jamel's only chance is to make it into a brawl... and he still has less than a 50/50 chance of within a close range war. But if he stays at distance he's going to get massacred.
-
Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
Herring starting to stand on his toes and heels after getting clipped here. Don't like the look of that temple side of eye. Shakur fighting like the bully
-
Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
Shaku a bit unraveled start of 8th, yelling on punches and sloppy. He's shifted down and Herring working inside and ref breaking some mauling. Go Herring round but he's in a hole big time.
-
Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
Bscene gave herring the 5th round so far. I'll go with the blow blow here as most accurate!
-
Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
It's telling that Herring being the taller man... it's actually Stevenson who has the more effective jab. He's constantly stealing the thunder from Herring's attack with that stiff jab that slams Jamel's head back.
-
Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
Shakurs breakout win to step into here at this point. Coasted a bit but picks the spots in 9th..still though mash the gas son ;D
-
Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
More worried about that golf ball on his left eye than a cut on the right..they should watch out here
-
Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
It's over.
Was a bit surprised by the stoppage but can't second guess. Herring was little more than a punching bag in there, and no way he was going to win the fight.
-
Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
Thx! Shakur has that swagger. Wasn't sure if he had something to back it up.
-
Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
A night of early stoppages.
-
Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
jamel had lost most of the rounds. his eye was messed up & things were only going to get worse for him. oscar, chris & roger better hide

Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
That was a very impressive performance from Stevenson to win the title. He looked so composed and strong against the Herring.
Reminded me of Floyd's breakout fight against Hernandez way back in 1998.

True and maybe Stevenson is far from Floyd's level too.

it was a good performance. there is a lot of work to do before we starting comparing him to floyd's level. the case can be made that he is currently the best at one thirty but i'd like to see shakur prove that

"Is Shakur Stevenson Afraid Of Moving To Lightweight Division?"
:vd:
Jamel Herring hasn't even finished shaking out the cobwebs from his TKO loss to Stevenson... and this dude is saying Stevenson's "afraid" of moving up to lightweight.
Sometimes I have to wonder about the biases and thought processes of some of these writers.
By my count, he must've said Shakur was "afraid", "lacked self-confidence", and "lacked courage" to move up to 135 at least half a dozen times.
Number one... Shakur just recently moved up to super feather. He gave up 3 inches in height and 4 inches in reach to Herring. He will naturally be at an ever bigger disadvantage against the lightweights.
Number two... what's wrong with Shakur wanting to unify the division he just recently moved to?
There's Oscar Valdez (who Shakur called out literally minutes after knocking out Herring)... Michael Berchelt is still around... and there are a few more names.
No... it's not the star-studded lightweight division. But the writer's just gonna have to get over it for the time being. ;)
Then he compares Shakur to Canelo. Please...
Shakur WANTS to fight Oscar Valdez. Called him out. Canelo says he doesn't want to fight Benavidez because Benavidez is Mexican. :vd:
In any case... apples and oranges. Shakur has all of 17 fights on his record. He's 24 years old. Give him a little breathing room before you start making stupid comparisons.
I doubt Shakur will even have a mega-hype-machinery behind him like Canelo has had all his career.
Biggest difference between them is: Shakur will fight anyone at any time, any place. No diva demands... no ridiculous catchweights... no marinating... no waiting till they're over the hill... no picking out weak titleholders at higher divisions before scampering back down to safety.
Stupid comparison.

Re: Jamel Herring vs Shakur Stevenson - WBO super-featherweight title
shakur v chris is the best fight to make at one thirty skills wise. oscar is the money fight
