Dmitry Bivol v Gilberto Ramirez

Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (44-0, 30 KOs) wants the World Boxing Association to order WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol to defend against him next.

Ramirez has been waiting for Bivol to get around to defending against him, and he’s anxious for the WBA to speed up the process. Unfortunately for Ramirez, Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs) wants to face IBF/WBC/WBO champion Artur Beterbiev or take on Canelo Alvarez in a rematch.

With the tremendous interest from boxing fans in seeing a Canelo vs. Bivol rematch, the WBA would be shooting themselves in the foot by ordering a Bivol-Ramirez fight. If Ramirez were to beat Bivol, that would take a lot of the shine out of a Canelo-Bivol second fight.

“I appreciate the WBA and believe the right process will be followed,” Ramirez said. “I’m confused about Bivol ducking me.

“I earned the WBA mandatory challenger position in the ring, not once, but twice. He’s been talking about fighting me for the last two years. It’s time. Canelo didn’t commit to the rematch, so now I’m curious what other excuses he (Bivol) might make to avoid me,” said Ramirez.

Zurdo Ramirez held the WBO 168-lb title from 2016 to 2019, but he didn’t fight anyone popular enough to become a star. He wanted to fight Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez, but not surprisingly, neither of those fighters was interested in facing him. It’s easy to see why.

Even at 168, Ramirez was huge for the weight class. Zurdo was the size of a light-heavyweight when he fought at 168, and now that he’s in the 175-lb weight class, he’s big for that division as well.

For Ramirez’s last fight against Dominic Boesel, he rehydrated to 203 lbs after weighing in at 174. If there were a rehydration clause to keep Ramirez from ballooning up into the 200s, it would make sense for Bivol to fight him next.

Ramirez is painfully slow, very easy to hit, and nowhere near the fighter, he was when he fought at 168. Adding bulk to his tall 6’2″ frame has slowed Ramirez down, and he doesn’t possess the power of the talented fighters in the division like Beterbiev, Joe Smith Jr., Bivol, or even Anthony Yarde.

Ramirez is an easy mark for Bivol or any of the top light heavyweights without his colossal size.

Promoter Eddie Hearn wants Bivol to defend against Buatsi next, and that’s a fight that can make money if it’s staged in the UK. It wouldn’t be easy for Bivol, considering Buatsi can punch, but the other option of fighting the cruiserweight-sized Zurdo Ramirez is no piece of cake either.

artur v dmitry should be happening next in a perfect world. if artur fights anthony yarde in october instead then i guess they could fit this in as well, i really hope the undisputed fight doesn't get bogged down

Promoter Eddie Hearn wants unified light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev’s promoters at Top Rank to make the undisputed fight against WBA champion Dmitry Bivol next rather than waiting until next year to put it together.

Hearn says Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs) won’t be able to fight Beterbiev in the first half of 2023 because he’s going to be facing Canelo Alvarez in a rematch in May.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is planning on having Beterbiev defend against #1 WBO Anthony Yarde in October in London, even though the mandatory isn’t due at this time.

In other words, this is a fight that Arum wants, not what Beterbiev or the fans want. They want the undisputed clash between Bivol and Beterbiev.

Hearn believes that the handlers for Beterbiev realize how good Bivol is after watching him defeat Canelo Alvarez on May 7th, so they’ve decided to take an easier fight against Yarde (22-2, 21 KOs) rather than risk getting beaten.

Arum NOT interested in making Beterbiev vs. Bivol fight

It was clear long before Beterbiev fought Joe Smith Jr last weekend that Arum wasn’t interested in letting his fighter face Bivol.

This is what Arum said last month on May 19th on Fighthype about his lack of interest in matching Beterbiev vs. Bivol:

“Bivol fights on the DAZN platform and we’re not interested in our fighters fighting on DAZN,” said Arum. “Our fighters don’t want to fight on DAZN. They want to fight on ESPN where they get the biggest audience.

“So my suggestion is if the Canelo rematch isn’t available, he should fight Gilberto Ramirez. So Eddie Hearn and Gilberto both do their fights on DAZN, so it [Bivol vs. Ramirez] shouldn’t be a hard fight to make,” said Arim in making it clear back on May 19th that he had NO interest in letting Beterbiev fight Dmitry Bivol.

“Bivol is ready to fight for the undisputed,” said Eddie Hearn to Fight Hub TV. “There’s a lot of smoke & mirrors in boxing where people say, ‘Bivol is ready, he wants to become undisputed.’

“What are you waiting for? We’ve got no fight scheduled for Bivol,” said Hearn in sending a message to the promoters for IBF/WBC/WBO light heavyweight champion.

“So, yeah, they’ve got a mandatory that’s not really a mandatory, but they’re choosing to take it in [Anthony] Yarde],” Hearn continued about wanting to make the Beterbiev vs. Bivol fight NEXT rather than in 2023.

“Let’s do the undisputed next. Why do we have to wait? The fact is, people, know now how good Dmitry Bivol is. Dmitry Bivol is the best 175-pounder in the world.

“Beterbiev is a beast, by the way, but he doesn’t beat Dmitry Bivol. So let’s make that fight now. September, October, November, not waiting because if we wait, Bivol is going to make a defense in September or October, and then we’re going to do the Canelo Alvarez rematch.

“So if you want to be undisputed, strike now. Don’t talk about other fights. Let’s make the fight. I back Dmitry Bivol every day against Beterbiev, who is a great fighter, but Bivol is a special, special fighter,” said Hearn.

Agreed. But I was wrong and Bob isn’t standing in the way of this one, it seems. I’m still skeptical because it’s not signed. But I will be glad to be wrong.

Back yet again to the UAE. I get that the sport is no longer an 'all-American' centered thing but I think this shafts both fighters in a way. Same for the UK and last nights Joshua v Usyk. Other than the massive bankroll and that is due for any top pro but what does it do for new fan exposure and a live venue etc. It just feels like the sport on whole is losing something and a live gate / fans are becoming secondary. If they're billing it as some sort of "revenge tour" for Zurdo in name of Canelo against Bivol...but then we hold it in some isolated cricket quiet arena stuffed with millionaires, company heads and a mere fraction of actual following fans :cwm13:. Solid match up all moaning aside but it's no wonder half the arenas are empty during live broadcasts. Meanwhile a zillion "newer fans" hang on every work a short-bus like j Paul says.

So it looks like Bivol vs Zurdo is a done deal. Meanwhile, Canelo has clearly stated that he won't fight any Mexicans, so that would rule out Zurdo were he to beat Bivol. Also, Canelo ain't looking in the other direction either because who would be there but none other than Benavidez. He's not Mexican Mexican... but apparently has enough Mexican roots that he qualifies as a Mexican. If Benavidez were no danger to Canelo his roots would mysteriously disappear and all of a sudden he'd be 100% Arizonian. :D :D Of course, if Bivol defeats Zurdo, that might seem like an opportunity for Canelo to fight Bivol again... but alas... he's already "eyeing" Usyk because we all know Canelo is all about pushing his boundaries. :D :-X :smilie_pinoc: :lolhaha:

The “landmine” even threatened to follow him back to his new SMW home, but he dodged it.
His team certainly show niftier footwork outside the ring than he does in it.
Dunno how he gets away with it to be fair.

I'm willing to wait until after Ginger predictably knocks out 40-year old, blown-up middleweight GGG... to see what he does next.

He's talked all kinds of shit.

He "wants" to go up and face Usyk.

Unless, of course, Benavidez is somehow exposed between now and then.

Dmitry Bivol believes unification fight with Artur Beterbiev would be ‘more difficult’ than his clash with Canelo

Dmitry Bivol believes there is a harder fight out there for him than a rematch with Canelo and it comes in the form of a clash with Artur Beterbiev.

Earlier this year in May, Bivol pulled off a huge upset to beat Canelo and defend his WBA light heavyweight world title.

Prior to the fight, Canelo seemed to be an unstoppable force, as a four-weight world champion and having just torn through the super middleweight division to become undisputed champion at 168 lbs.

Despite Canelo’s air of invincibility, the unbeaten Bivol remained composed throughout their contest and boxed his way to an unanimous decision victory.

Bivol is currently the WBA world champion at 175lbs with all three of the other belts in the division held by Beterbiev, so the obvious fight to make is an undisputed clash between the two Russians.

If the pair do fight, Bivol believes it will be an even tougher challenge than his bout with Canelo, he told Boxing Scene: “It will be difficult but not much more. Just different type of difficult.

“The fight against Canelo was difficult because no one believed in me except my team.

“Beterbiev is not as popular as Canelo so maybe that will be easier.

“But about boxing skills, about sizes, I think it will be more difficult.”

Canelo had the opportunity to exercise an immediate rematch clause with Bivol but opted instead to take on Gennady Golovkin in a trilogy fight.

As for Bivol, he has an upcoming contest with former super middleweight world champion, Gilberto Ramirez and so his manager, Vadim Kornilov, believes he is no longer tied into a rematch with Canelo.

“We are not really trapped into the rematch clause anymore,” Kornilov said, “this is the fight now [against Ramirez] and the rematch will be negotiated, both guys went and took out a fight.

“Then we have to work together and figure out the next fight.”

Bivol himself also seems more interested in moving on to fight for the light-heavyweight undisputed crown than taking another fight with Canelo.

“To be honest, I want to fight for the other belts,” Bivol revealed. “But if [Canelo] wants to fight against me again then we can negotiate about it and if everything is okay for me for next fight, why not.

“But I am focused on Ramirez now. It is a really good opponent for me and I have to beat him to create plans after the fight.”

gilberto is huge & could be fighting at cruiser or heavyweight but i just don't see him being able to do much with dmitry. i think dmitry boxes past gilberto for a wide decision

Given the recent trend I'm almost surprised they didn't try to make this ppv. Or did they :-X. But it looks like dazn will squeeze out another $20 here. Have an odd feeling Bivol will have to fight a near perfect fight with all the um 'things' and judges concerned. It's a very solid top fight, and as fans we're due!

Ramirez is super average, he's fairly big but he just doesn't seem to do anything very well, bivol is too quick and good for him, i doubt this will be close, i bet bivol wins at least 10 rounds.

Rakimov determined to walk onto and thru whatever comes his way. Barret has real sting on the right hand but not hard to find when his feet stop moving. Nice mix with his mobility and picking when to sit down on accurate shots. Guy can punch.

Rakimov 8th stayed right in his chest mostly and Barrett output dropped. Rakimov feet can look pretty clumsy in spots. He needs to mash the gas and force exchanges.
