oscar ‘el pupilo’ collazo
the twenty-five-year-old puerto rican prospect started boxing around fourteen & won five national amateur boxing titles during his seven-year amateur career, including a bronze medal at the twenty seventeen pan american championships & a gold medal at the twenty nineteen pan american games. is said to have concluded his amateur days with a ledger of one hundred & thirty-six wins, with fifteen loses. he was striving for a place on puerto rico’s twenty twenty olympic team but was denied the opportunity when the light flyweight division was not included at the games. el pupilo decided to turn professional in february twenty twenty. oscar’s record is currently unblemished at five victories, including three knockouts. he recorded the biggest win of his career in his last fight, over veteran former two-time world minimumweight champion victorio saludar, going twelve rounds for the first time. both fighters were knocked down in the seventh round. oscar is promoted by miguel cotto promotions, htwo entertainment & golden boy, who are moving the southpaw aggressively & el pupilo could soon find himself in championship contention. please take a look

Re: oscar ‘el pupilo’ collazo
Thanks! Wasn't aware of this upcoming matchup. Should be interesting indeed. Collazo is certainly a prospect... and Mendez isn't quite at gatekeeper status yet... so let's see.

i think oscar was going to be on the undercard if king ry took a tune up in january, so this fight landed on the undercard of the recently announced january twenty eighth alexis rocha v anthony young card. this will be oscar collazo's second former champion in six fights. very good progression & opposition

Oh absolutely. Seems like a fast track as compared to the typical young prospect. I hope it doesn't backfire on him/them. They must see something special in him to be bringing him up at that pace.

since doing my prospect series i have noticed that there are quite a few of them around that are taking challenges early. keysahwn davis is higher profile prospect of that ilk. i've also noticed the politics at the lower level & how a good promoter can make all the difference. take katsuma akitsugi for example, many of his fights are of his opponents promoters cards & now that he has shown himself to be a high risk with low reward he is having trouble getting fights. oscar collazo has miguel cotto behind him & he's in a division where it is easier to be fast tracked to a title but his opposition is showing he is not taking the easy route

this copy is not perfect. i can see el pupilo being on pound for pound lists in the near future but he needs to control that aggression.

Re: oscar ‘el pupilo’ collazo
Collazo looks like he could be very special
He's making a case for being the new face of Puerto Rican boxing :-X
He has speed, Ring IQ, size, power, southpaw, works the body & already wanting unifications
105 could be entering a golden era
-
Re: oscar ‘el pupilo’ collazo
I hope you're right, Big J. :)
I'm hoping we're entering a new era (here in PR) with these boxing champions, because it seems to be feast or famine around here.
After Cotto, nobody seemed to step up for awhile.
But right now I have pretty high hopes for two champions (Oscar, and Subriel Matias), and one that seems to be on his way (Xander Zayas).
There's a couple of others, but these are the ones I rate the highest.

Re: oscar ‘el pupilo’ collazo
Thank you for that, @TIC
I enjoyed watching it. Oscar looked totally dominant in that fight, and showed an impressive repertoire of shots. I didn't realize CP Freshmart had been the longest reigning minimumweight champion in history. Quite an accomplishment then, for Oscar. Looking elsewhere in the division, there's Melvin Jerusalem the WBC champ... but Oscar has already knocked him out. I'm hoping Oscar unifies all the belts, and who knows... maybe move up a division.
-
Re: oscar ‘el pupilo’ collazo
thank turki, he posted all the fights to his youtube channel, but they were already on other youtube channels as a whole card. yeah with thammanoon knocked off artur becomes the next longest reigning champion. fights melvin jerusalem & pedro taduran to become undisputed should be the move, oscar looked pretty big next to thammanoon so i think a move up will definitely happen at some stage

Re: oscar ‘el pupilo’ collazo
I know it is only early in Collazo's career and Ivan Calderon has been an inspiration and nothing but supportive for Collazo but does Collazo have the ability and opponents to equal or possibly even surpass the heights achieved by Calderon?

Glad to see you mention Ivan. :) Ivan was a great minimum weight in his own right. Not much of a punch, but a wonderful boxer and counterpuncher. Do I think Collazo has the ability and opponents to equal or surpass the achievements of Calderón? I would be inclined to say yes. I've seen several of his fights, and they've been dominant, against more than credible opposition. What separates him from Ivan is his punching power. Being a southpaw I feel also works to his advantage. Time will tell... but I think Collazo is headed to greater things.

Re: oscar ‘el pupilo’ collazo
i think oscar can dominant straw & jr fly right now. i hope he can get in the mix at fly within the next year or two
