LEIGH WOOD is the only man fighting for his old WBA featherweight crown after bloated Mauricio Lara was stripped ahead of their Saturday fight.
In February the violent Mexican stopped the 34-year-old Nottingham ace and snatched away his 126lbs world title.
The Manchester rematch was arranged but Lara - who refuelled for the original clash with a giant pizza and bottle of Coke on the Friday weigh-in stage - failed his midweek weight check.
The British Boxing Board of Control were concerned and warned Lara that he was forbidden from dehydrating himself down to less than 128.6lbs on Friday.
But, after Wood obeyed the rules and weighed in at 125.9lbs, Lara bowled in at 129.8lbs.
The BBBoC were fuming but the title decision fell to the sanctioning body who thankfully took action on Friday afternoon and stripped the champion.
Wood’s trainer Ben Davison considered pulling his man out of the fight because the South American knockout artist could be significantly heavier and more dangerous.
But, as of Friday afternoon, the fight was going ahead with only Wood capable of winning the strap.
If the fight does go ahead it is likely Lara will have his weight checked again on Saturday and be fined.
A WBA statement said: "Mauricio Lara lost the World Boxing Association (WBA) featherweight belt after not being able to make weight today.
"However, Leigh Wood will be able to opt for the title."
Lara's career record stands at 25-2-1, with 18 KOs.
Meanwhile, Wood's record is 26-3.

so the bbboc prevented mauricio from even attempting to make weight. i wonder if there was a mid week check for devin?
Pretty lame for a feather missing by close to 4 lbs. Makes you root for Wood and highly question the drive of Lara. Likely over invested in his mule kick power with Wood not even 3 months off brutal ko but an uphill battle for Wood.
you got it. you would know how detrimental these mid week pre-fight weight checks are to a fighter. they have to basically do a mini weight cut to make these checks. every fighter makes weight differently. i'm not saying mauricio would have made the weight, he has fought over there a few times so these weight checks should have been known to him, so i'd be interested in what his mid week weight checks for his fights there previously were. mauricio is big for the division & may have enjoyed his championship victory a little too much but he won his belt in the ring & should have been given the opportunity to make the weight for the fight at the weigh in. if the bbboc had concerns at that point then they could pull the fight or make other arrangements
Yeh that is odd. Did they just look at him wobblin out and say "nope far too fat mate" and leave it to the sanctioning body or was there a contractual pre weight Lara signed to after standing on the scale? Not his first day abroad and he knows the room. Granted it all sounds shifty. We've seen lots of gamesmanship and belt drops on the scale. Almost sounds like a reverse rehydration clause. But he also needs to understand he's a big risk vs reward type match. For Lara the title trinket is what got him in the door, without it he's a rowdy bar fight you'd like to avoid.
from what i understand the bbboc has a certain percentage from the weight limit that a fighter must be within & mauricio was outside that. the wbc has a thirty day weight check & then a seven day weight check i think. mauricio has fought in the uk a few times so he should have been aware of these mid week weight checks, if they have been used on his previous fights. i can see a need for a seven day weight check but a mid week?

Missed it all. So he got fat on his power and came sluggish? Well done Leigh with steady focus and execution.
Leigh Wood believes boxing should have one 'global organisation' following Mauricio Lara's two-year ban.
Lara was slapped with the ban two years after he lost the WBA featherweight title to Wood in Manchester in March 2023.
The Mexican was banned for two years for an anti-doping violation, UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) announced this month.
He tested positive for the banned substance Betamethasone, which is used to treat inflammation caused by skin conditions.
Lara claimed the positive test came from a shoulder injection in the build-up to his fight with Wood, but UKAD said he failed to explain how Betamethasone entered his system.
Wood joined Jim White and Sim Jordan on talkSPORT on Thursday, when he revealed he only heard about the failed test 'a few days ago'.
"I don't think it was intent, trying to get an intentional advantage, but I guess we'll never know," the 36-year-old said.
"It's hard to speculate, but my opinion is, I don't think [Lara was] trying to get an intentional advantage."
Wood then called for one organisation to look after bans in the future.
"I think there needs to be a global organisation that can control the bans," he added.
"In England, in the UK, if you get banned, you can't fight anywhere. That's it, you're screwed basically. That should be a global thing.
"Like in America, you get banned in one state, you can fight in another state.
"If you can't get a license in one state, for whatever reason, you get a license in another state, it's like the Wild West, isn't it?
"The UK is probably one of the strictest, but they can't oversee the whole world."
Lara has had three fights since he was defeated by Wood, drawing with Daniel Lugo before claiming wins over Pedro Alejandro Delgado and Edwing Davila.
All three bouts took place in Mexico, a country where Lara can continue to box in, as well as America, because he received a UK ban.
Wood has fought just once in the squared circle since his victory over Lara, defeating Josh Warrington with a stunning knockout to retain his WBA belt in Sheffield.
This led fans to believe that Wood was serving a 'silent ban' due to his inactivity ahead of the Nottingham native's return to the ring in May against Northern Ireland's Anthony Cacace.
However, the Wood hit back at those fans as he told talkSPORT what a fighter has to experience to prevent a drug testing ban.
He said: "What I've been through in the last year, it's been hard, but I'm the cleanest athlete you'll ever meet...
"I have to give a place where I'm sleeping every night, I have to give an hour window to be tested every day.
"And they have to know where I'm training. They have to know everything about my whole week. And if I miss one test, that's a strike.
"You get three strikes one year, you're banned. So I'm not missing a test in the last year.
"I've been on it for probably a year and a half. I've had multiple tests, random tests. I got tested twice recently."
Wood later revealed how he is now part of a voluntary anti-doping organisation ahead of his next fight with Cacace on May 10.
