Artur Beterbiev v Callum Smith
Callum Smith is set to challenge Artur Beterbiev for the unified light heavyweight world titles in Canada on August 19.
Beterbiev currently possesses the WBC, WBO and IBF belts and will aim to defend them against challenger Smith in Quebec City.
Two-time Olympian Beterbiev enters the bout with a 100 per cent knockout ratio (19-0, 19 KOs), while Liverpool’s Smith (29-1, 21 KOs) is a former WBA super middleweight world champion.
“I’m excited to finally get my opportunity to become a two-weight world champion,” Smith said.
I will be returning to Liverpool as a world champion once more
“I’m no stranger to fighting on away soil, having boxed in Saudi Arabia twice, across America, and now heading to Canada on August 19.
“There was no hesitation from me going to Canada to fight Artur Beterbiev, and I will be returning to Liverpool as a world champion once more.”
Beterbiev added: “Quebec is my second home, so I’m very happy to finally defend my titles on home turf.
“When you are world champion, everyone wants the opportunity to take your belt, and that’s especially true in my case, with three titles at stake.
“I’ve already started my training camp, and I’ll be ready to not only defend my belts, but to also put on an impressive show August 19.”

Re: Artur Beterbiev v Callum Smith
Call me crazy. I give Smith a slim shot. It's slim and not large at all :-X, but he's looked a bit better at the weight. Let's put it this way he'll defintley show up with more passion and drive than a Zurdo for his golden opportunity. Hard to believe it's almost two months away. We're in a fight and action void this week for sure.

Before the Canelo capitulation I would’ve given him a shot as well, especially against an ageing champ (although he hasn’t shown that yet.) but that Canelo fight disappointed me so badly, I can’t really trust him anymore.

Re: Artur Beterbiev v Callum Smith
I was extremely disappointed in Callum effort against Canelo too especially after a career best performance when he stopped and retired Groves.
I want Beterbiev to win so that a unification fight with Bivol can still happen. His fight against Yarde was one of the best FOTY.
I can see Callum feel the power and try and survive again.

Re: Artur Beterbiev v Callum Smith
The highly-anticipated fight between Callum Smith and unified light-heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev has been postponed.
The Canadian has undergone surgery on his jaw after suffering from a bone infection that came as a result of dental work.
This means the 38-year-old's mandatory title defence has now been delayed with a new date yet to be announced.

Re: Artur Beterbiev v Callum Smith
This is really unfortunate. So jaw/ tooth infection? Don’t hear about that a lot today. Hope they can get it back on track. Always a pleasure watching the one-man-wrecking crew that is Beterbiev!

Crazy. Smith will be stopped within 2 rounds.

Could be wrong but that would really surprise me. Outside of Smith Jr who set up shop directly in front on Beterbiev, crossed his lead foot and said Hey hit me, Beterbiev usually takes some time to get rolling. I can see a methodical breakdown turned beat up mid to late but Smith is able to keep it smart with decent enough pop early.

Re: Artur Beterbiev v Callum Smith
American journalist Dan Rafael reports that Bivol has signed his contract for his side of the deal to face Beterbiev next.
However, Beterbiev must first beat his WBC mandatory challenger Callum Smith on January 13.
If Beterbiev does emerge victorious though, he can then negotiate his side of the deal to face Bivol and potentially sign to finalise the fight in 2024.

I agree.
Disappointed with his performance against Canelo as he seemed star struck.
Would that Smith have beaten a Benevidez?
Either way, like Mayweather says you need to perform under the spotlights.
I see Smith crumbling and it’s a shame as his left hook is vicious.

Yarde, Buatsi and the rest of the 175 camp are waiting on the belts to be split up as there’s no way any of them beat Beterbiev/Bivol.
Expect their shot to happen late 2024 when the IBF gets pulled away instantly from the undisputed winner!

Bivol should do the unification fight and become undisputed before moving up or down the weights. It would be a waste of a super fight if it did not happen.

Re: Artur Beterbiev v Callum Smith
“I don’t blame people for wanting to see Beterbiev-Bivol. As a boxing fan, that’s a fight that I would like to see,” Callum Smith told Boxing Social.
“It is a little disrespectful when there are people in boxing posting, and I’m due to fight [Beterbiev] in January.
“I’m confident in my own ability, and I feel I can beat him when I’m at my best. I believe the best version of me beats anyone in the world.
“In my eyes, it’ll be me [winning against] Beterbiev and then me against Bivol after that. So, I think I can ruin people’s plans.
“I’m not angry for people wanting to see the fight because it’s a fight that people want to see. At the moment, they’re the two champions in this weight division - so I can’t really take too much offence about it.”

I normally couldn't care less what Hearn has to say, especially when it's a British vs British fight. But sorry... this one couldn't go un-commented.
Callum?
Knocking Beterbiev out?
The same Callum who royally pissed me off when he gave up any size advantage and laid down like a wimp against Ginger?
Thus perpetuating the Ginger myth and adding to perplexing inability of ANY British fighter of putting up a decent fight against the King of Coddled Divas??
It's ok to promote fights.
It's quite another to talk B.S. out of the side of your mouth and expect serious fans to take you seriously.

Re: Artur Beterbiev v Callum Smith
The Canelo fight was seriously damaging for Smith. He was going great guns knocking people over, WBSS champ and Unified world champ. In a flash he has an iffy one with Ryder, he's dead at the weight and bends over for Alvarez for the pay day. He's gone from genuine world class to completely unreliable.
I'll say this for him in an effort to add a positive spin. He's better than Yarde. Yarde is athletic and can hit a bit, but he's pretty clueless when he can't outmuscle his opponent and has no idea how to construct a fight. Despite being completely out of his depth, Yarde gave Beterbiev a decent row and had his moment against Kovalev.
I think like most people I expect Smith the retreat into his shell under fire. He might get stopped on his feet offering nothing back, he might cling on for a lopsided points loss.
-
Re: Artur Beterbiev v Callum Smith
Yarde gave Beterbiev a tough fight and it was a classic contest that was one of the best bouts last year.
Smith has manouvered himself into this shot and is hoping Artur has aged to nick the titles.
-
Re: Artur Beterbiev v Callum Smith
John Ryder believes Smith can disrupt these plans.
"I think it's a great fight for Callum," Ryder told talkSPORT.com, "Especially with Beterbiev being injured and the fight being postponed. I think it's a good sign.
"Is age getting the better of Beterbiev now? Is the timing right for Callum?
"I know Callum's going to his back yard for the fight and rightly so.
"If you want to fight a champion than what better way to do it than in their back yard?
"I've got high hopes for Callum in this fight, I think he'll come away victorious."

All wifi down for a 5x5 block area locally and hot spots buggy or nonexistent :p. “Should” be up by Monday. Here’s to catching big fights on your tiny phone, possibly! Another reason to miss boxing on cable ;D. May be time to rent a U haul and blow this dinosaur City. Still say Smith will make a fight if it before being ground down. Hearn going overboard with the ko chatter and sitting on his punches with Beterbiev. Either way he’s going to need to be it early or latter.
-
Re: Artur Beterbiev v Callum Smith
Callum Smith, 33, is an underdog against Beterbiev on away soil and says the champion's power is not on his mind.
"The best version of me beats anyone in the world," Smith said.
"I fully stand by that. The time's now. I'm ready to become a two-division world champion."
At a news conference on Thursday, Smith's trainer Buddy McGirt said they weren't "stupid" and were prepared for Beterbiev's power.

Re: Artur Beterbiev v Callum Smith
Watched a YouTube last night with Joe Gallagher’s views on the fight.
What a fucking prick and a baby he is!
Being Smith’s former trainer, the dignified thing to do would be to back Smith to the hilt , not show everyone how bitter you are by tipping Beterbiev.
Ok , you might saying “he’s being honest.” Ok, fine, but why start now?
If he was still Smith’s trainer, he would be blowing all sorts of shit up Smith’s ass, rendering “honesty” as a word that is not in his vocabulary.
I’ve always thought he was a fucking big baby.

Re: Artur Beterbiev v Callum Smith
“It has come to my attention that Callum intends to disseminate misleading information about my VADA testing program for this fight," Beterbiev said, "Let me be clear now: I am a clean athlete.
"I have never tested positive for a banned substance throughout my amateur and professional career and I complied with all VADA requirements and protocols during the build-up to this fight.
"Any attempt to imply otherwise, through innuendo or suggestion is slanderous and libellous.
"This conduct is beyond acceptable trash talk in combat sports. Callum is already searching for excuses, looking for a way out. See you Saturday.”

Re: Artur Beterbiev v Callum Smith
I don't understand this atypical bullshit. Atypical findings are common? Granted I'm a little out of the loop these days, but I don't think I've heard the word used before. I'm certain it's never been common place to be discussing atypical findings. Why now?
How do they decide if these elevated levels are naturally occurring, or as a result of cheating? They tests them again! Low and behold these elevated levels have fucked off, as has the atypical finding. In much the same way they would do with someone who's cheating perhaps?
You're either clean or you're not. There's no need for commentary on the space between and no good can come from it. Drug taking in boxing is enough of a tyre fire as it is.

Re: Artur Beterbiev v Callum Smith
Its all in the science. Traces of certain banned substances are in practically everything we eat and drink. Its more of a case of how much is found in the system to rule out intentional dosing or just nothing can be done.
I have no idea where the line is drawn because I'm not a scientist so i cant really have an opinion on the matter.
I agree though, there should be an is or isn't cheating.
The line needs to be drawn.

Re: Artur Beterbiev v Callum Smith
So this goes all the way back to 1st week of December? Being the studious and upstanding body that it is, the wbc has "clarified the situation". Better have a fork for the word salad..
'Two samples (one urine and another blood) collected on December 6, 2023, yielded analytical “atypical findings” for 5b-androstanediol and hGH (human growth hormones). An atypical finding is not a positive results for a banned substance. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) defines an atypical finding as “a report from a laboratory or other WADA-approved entity which requires further investigation … ” That is exactly what the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA), which is the entity that administers the WBC Clean Boxing Program, did in this case.
In response to the atypical findings, VADA immediately ordered additional anti-doping tests on Beterbiev. To that end, VADA caused samples to be collected from Beterbiev on December 15, 2023 (urine), December 21, 2023 (blood and urine), and then again on January 3, 2024 (blood). All of those samples yielded absolutely negative results. Matchroom, Top Rank, the Quebec Commission, all sanctioning bodies involved (WBC, IBF, and WBO), and the Association of Boxing Commissions (ABC) received notifications of all the results of anti-doping test Beterbiev has taken, and therefore of all follow up procedures.
It is widely known that there is no way to identify conclusively the source of an atypical finding. In the case of 5b-androstanediol, it has been reported that the atypical finding can be due to the rate certain people’s bodies metabolize naturally occurring testosterone-type compounds. In the case of hGH, WADA provides with specific criteria to its accredited laboratories to report hGH levels as atypical or adverse findings. In Beterbiev’s case, the level of hGH detected did not meet the WADA criteria for an adverse finding, and therefore constitutes an atypical one.
Because the origin of an atypical finding is very difficult to identify, WADA recommends further testing to monitor any abnormal variations in testosterone levels. In Beterbiev’s case, the follow up tests were not only negative, but yielded consistent testosterone levels without any spiking that could have suggested exogenous intake of performance enhancement substances. In short, Beterbiev’s testing protocol and results therein lead only to one conclusion: there are no adverse findings. In light of the testing measures taken and all results obtained, the WBC has not and will not take any adverse action in this matter.'
