No trash talk. No drama. Just two deadly serious, focused fighters.
That was the tone at the kickoff news conference Tuesday afternoon in New York City to promote the pay-per-view fight between undisputed champions Canelo Alvarez and Jermell Charlo on Sept. 30 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The fighters demonstrated nothing but respect for one another — even shaking hands after their staredown — and promised a battle to remember.
“I’m happy to be in this position right now, in the big fights,” said Alvarez, the 168-pound champion. “Jermell Charlo is a great fighter, the undisputed champion in his weight class (154). He takes challenges like me.
“I always take risks. We love being involved in these kind of fights.”
Alvarez (59-2-2, 39 KOs) was expected to face Charlo’s brother, 160-pound titleholder Jermall Charlo. However, promoters threw everyone a curve when they announced the smaller, but more accomplished sibling would be the opponent.
The Mexican star has been at or near the top of all pound-for-pound lists while Charlo (35-1-1, 19 KOs) has steadily climbed them, the result of a series of high-profile victories.
And while Charlo has never taken part in a superfight like this one, he seemed to handle the bright spotlight well at the opening news conference at Palladium Times Square.
He looked intense, perhaps a bit nervous as he walked to the center stage after he was introduced. However, he was at ease during his opening statement and when he fielded questions from moderator Brian Custer of Showtime.
The big question for Charlo is size, as he will be moving up two weight classes to face a future Hall of Famer. Charlo is taller than Alvarez and didn’t look appreciably thinner but he’s accustomed to trading punches with 154-pounders, not those at 168.
He acknowledged the challenge but believes the importance of size is overblown.
“A lot of guys are worrying about the wrong things,” he said, “moving up in weight, doing this and doing that. When you want to win something this big you gotta risk it all. That’s part of this moment.”
He added later: “I know I’m moving up two weight divisions. Who cares? Who gives a damn? That won’t stop how I do it and the way I do it. I’m excited for this moment.”

Alvarez was more relaxed when he walked to the middle of the stage, smiling and waving to those in attendance. He has been here a million times.
He’s clearly motivated, though. The long-time face of the sport is arguably at a crossroads. He lost his first fight in almost a decade when he was easily outpointed by 175-pound champ Dmitry Bivol in May of last year, and he looked so-so in subsequent decisions over rival Gennadiy Golovkin and John Ryder.
As a result, many have come to the conclusion that Alvarez is in decline at 33, this in spite of the fact that he has been fighting with an injured left wrist. He had surgery after the Golovkin fight.
He implied two things on Tuesday: that his wrist is fully healed and that the magnitude of the event has lit a fire underneath him.
“It’s good that people are talking about that,” Alvarez said. “It’s fine. I don’t look good in these two past fights … but I know why. But I’m ready. I’m different now. I prepare myself for different kinds of fights. Every fight is different.
“This is a different fight. And I’m focused on it.”
Charlo also is motivated by those who might dismiss him, meaning both men have something to prove. That could be the theme of this matchup.
“I just really want to quiet by haters, quiet my doubters,” he said, “to turn non-believers into believers. I’ve watched a bunch of different examples of great people in the sport of boxing. I think this is the best time and the best moment for me. … When the moment presented itself, under the PBC banner, it was a no brainer to make it happen.
“Yeah, we both have mandatories, we both have different things. But the hell with that when you have something as big as this.”

Caleb Plant Says Rematch With Canelo Is “Pretty Close”
Plant... Jermell... Jermall...
Anybody but Benavidez and Morrell. Whatever kills the time till Ginger retires and rides off into the golden sunset. Hey... if nothing else, he can hope that Crawford dispatches Spence in the contractually obligated rematch... and fight Crawford as his finale.
Cherry-picking, diva bitch...
seventeen year old amateur star curmel moton could make his debut on the undercard against unbeaten ezequiel flores
Been watching the promotion of this and have to admit I am falling in love with this fight. I hope Charlo can pull off the upset. That is how they suck you into this event by the hype.
It’s not a bad fight. I happen to think Canelo is on the slide a touch and it’s gonna be difficult to match him up with any “dead certs.”
I always thought Charlo was a big LMW, a bit of a beast infact, and Canelo a small SMW , so the weight issue isn’t a massive deal.
But his inactivity could well be a problem.
I think he’s had a couple of disappointing displays in the past, but if he isn’t prepared for the biggest fight of his career , I’d be very surprised.
Gonna stop short of predicting the upset, but it wouldn’t surprise me.
i also think it's a good fight. the weight issue is only a massive deal to haters or those with an agenda. jermell could already have been at one sixty like his twin has been for the last six years. i really liked how jermell looked in the rematch with brian castano. i agree with you about the inactivity. guys coming into big fights recently off long periods of inactivity haven't faired to well
frank sanchez is supposed to be on the card

"Canelo Alvarez Predicting “Big Win For Mexico” Over Jermell Charlo"
September 13th, 2023 - Add a comment By Sean Jones: Canelo Alvarez sees himself picking up a “big win for Mexico” when he faces Jermell Charlo this month on Showtime pay-per-view. Canelo (59-2-2, 39 KOs) Charlo and his brother Jermall have been talking a lot, and he can’t wait to show his “skills” inside the ring on September 30th to prove them wrong.
It’s going to be a moral victory on Jermell’s part if he’s able to go 12 rounds with Canelo or if he’s able to beat him. That’s why it’s never a good idea for a well-known fighter to cherry-pick guys from weight classes below them, particularly when you’re talking about two or three. Even if Canelo beats Jermell (35-1-1,19 KOs), it won’t prove that he can beat ‘Big Charlo,’ Jermall (32-0,22 KOs), the guy that he was originally supposed to fight.
Beating Jermell will only give undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo partial credit because he fights two divisions below him at 154, and in the eyes of fans, this is just another example of the Mexican star hand-picking an easier opponent while ducking the guys he should be fighting at 168 & 175.
Canelo ducking these murderers row fighter:
David Benavidez
Dmitry Bivol
David Morrell Jr.
Artur Beterbiev
Demetrius Andrade
“I still feel young & fresh, and I never think about the end of my career. I just train and fight every year, and I feel great. I think it’s one of my greatest camps ever had,” said Canelo Alvarez to Premier Boxing Champions. “I’m glad I’m able to train 100% now with my left hand. You see a little bit, and that’s made me feel confident because when you’re 100%, you feel confident. When you train knowing your 100%, you feel confident in the fight.
“Right now, I feel great. I feel like a beast. He’s good for 168,” said Canelo about Jermell. “I did that before. I jumped two weight classes, and I think when you’re a great champion, it doesn’t matter. “This fight motivates me a lot. On September 30th, I’m going to show them why I’m here. The Mexicans need to feel so proud about it. I don’t know what kind of boxing [Jermell] will bring that night.
“I don’t know if he’s going to come forward or move, but I don’t care to because I fight with a lot of styles, and I have the experience to adapt to every style. “I can do everything in the ring and adapt to any style. It’s going to be a great fight, but I expect a big win for Mexico.
You gotta hand it to Ginger, trying to talk up the fight. Nothing he can say erases the fact that he's gonna be fighting a guy not one weight division below him... but TWO WEIGHT DIVISIONS BELOW HIM. Meanwhile, he conveniently ignores those who can knock his red-headed ass out. Bivol already took him to school, even though the judges cards would lead you to think differently. Personally I'm still pissed at Bivol for not knocking the Ginger out of Canelo.
Let's face it... Canelo will NEVER face any of the guys listed above. He's a cherry-picking chickenshit, who will ride off into the sunset after a career of manufactured fights.
What a punk...
Can't wait till he leaves boxing.
Been seeing some training footage of Charlo. He looks GREAT. This will not be an easy night for Canelo and there is a slight chance Charlo may nip this one. I still have Canelo by a 10th/11th round TKO.
Canelo not a great skipper but says he is 100% ready.
When I first heard of this fight I was hyped because I thought it was "mall" not "mell". Now I know it's "mell" then the fight is bullshyt. "Mell" hasn't fought in 2 years and he's never fought at 168. So here we have "mell" skipping a whole division with no time to develop a 168 body or fights to acclimate to that size.
I haven’t heard one non-boxing fan talking about this fight. The All Access has been on YouTube damn near 5 days and only done a million views yesterday. Spence/Crawford All Access did that in a day.
Canelo knocks out "mell" then "mall" comes to avenge his brother
Jermell Charlo fought May 2022 which is less than 2 years ago. It was a very good performance and unified the division.
Jermall Charlo has not fought since June 2021 which is over 2 years ago. His latest video he is training with Roy Jones. He has had legal, injury and emotional issues that would not allow him to be ready for Canelo.
You could argue Jermell is avoiding Tszyu but he has generally been active.
Jermall has not defended his title in over 2 years as WBC have "supported" him. He really looks a mess at the moment and not ready for Canelo which is why he turned the opportunity down. He seemed to imply he would get another opportunity against Canelo in the future.
You are confusing your Charlo's
It's easy to do :D
I've always thought 'Mell was the better boxer
If it wasn't for his "injury" & followed inactivity
I think he'd be on most peoples P4P list
Personally I think too much has been made of the weight difference
Clearly "Mell is not small next to Canelo
I respectfully disagree. I think not enough is made of the weight difference. Jermell has fought at 154 or below his entire career. His record is 35-1-1 with 19 knockouts. Not exactly power numbers... against much smaller guys than Canelo. So it's obvious he's got NO chance to beat Canelo by TKO. Which leaves an opponent dancing around for 12 rounds, hoping not to get caught. It's what happened to Khan. It's what happened to GGG the 3rd time around. Canelo's not the boxing god everyone thinks he is... but he's no bum... and he's got an excellent chin. Knowing he's got nothing to worry about is going to allow him to forget a little about defense and press Charlo relentlessly. There's NO way the fight goes the 12 rounds... and everyone's gonna look at it as some remarkable achievement. When in reality it's just Canelo doing what he was supposed to do. A decision win for Canelo would be a HUGE moral defeat for him. Anything less than a mid to late round KO is an underachievement... and I'm gonna repeat that as many times as I can between now and the fight.
For the same reasons why I have Canelo by 10th round tko, at least. Mell's corner will look at Canelo start to pour it in at about the 6th and not let up as he walks through Charlo... It's gonna get real messy after about 7 or 8 and Charlo's corner will have to stop it to save him.
ok so just hear me out...just playing devils advocate here... what if there are really no marquis match ups now that crawford took out spence, the bigger charlo isn't ready and canelo doesn't want benavidez .....and Canelo has to carry the smaller charlo so the rematch is worth double and eat up some of that contract? Charlo bolsters his rep so that his fight with Crawford sells and pbc recoups some money there... Bivol, Beterbiev, Crawford are all outside of PBC banner, leaving plant and Benavidez
It's the Canelo doesn't want (quack quack woddle woddle) Benavidez that sticks in my teeth like a broken toothpick ;D. Perfect scenario for me was flushed down the toilet when Bud and Charlo sold their own legacy paths. Off the Spence win Bud vs Charlo full undisputed was a golden ticket. There is such a gap of if when it comes to Charlo post Canelo. Just struggle seeing a match with Crawford keeping big luster let alone Charlo realistically going back to 154 if he shows well and belts will fracture no doubt. Not to mention win. Can see Crawford leaving himself in limbo as he's made all his mega fight win all about immediate transferring into a career payday and ridiculous 3 division jump while zero storming the gates at 154 (now rather than 1 year out) or even tempting 160 first. Buds next step is going to be very very interesting and telling.
[QUOTE=Spicoli;1643790]I hope I’m wrong , but I have a sneaky feeling that “should Canelo win” on Saturday , after the fight , the possibility of Bud v Canelo is gonna get some serious traction.
There is only 1 fight out there for Canelo, even before the Charlo fight was signed………………Benavidez. Anything else is conning the fans.
[QUOTE=Primo Carnera;1643808]
You have 0.01% chance of being wrong. And since IMO a Canelo win on Saturday is a foregone conclusion... Bud had better get ready for the talk/hype.
Benavidez may as well live on Mars as far as Canelo is concerned.
David will only get in the way of Ginger's ride off into the sunset.
Definitely agree. As far as the canelo benavidez fight, I definitely think theres opportunity for canelo minus old legs against benavidez. I haven't been super impressed with benavidez. Yes, good had speed and combos, but weight problems, blow problems etc, benavidez is more than beatable. Its a size thing overall i think. Benavidez is what chavez, jr should have been...
Crawford and Charlo, should have been the golden ticket. I think much of that is deliberate though from the PBC side. Charlo looked like he soiled himself when crawford called him out mid spence fight and I think Derrick James, PBC and everyone on that side took umbrage to Crawford ability and intentions that could possibly topple their empire. The charlo/ canelo fight and a possible rematch leaves Crawford in no mans land. Essentially locking him out of the fights he needs/ wants for his meteoric charge towards historic to epic. I'm not big on that go anywhere (weight wise) approach with crawford, either. Even if i understand his age presenting that time sensitive x factor. At the same time, its kind of refreshing to see a fighter conscious of age limitations, and health (yes, we're looking at you roy) without having to take fragile sideshow exhibition route or pillow punching you tubers (yes, we're looking at you Floyd).. I guess i've grown tired of the monotony of ego driven primadonnas fighting once a year a half for multi million dollar purses funded by the casuals, shit talkers at ring side calling for fights and trying to negotiate privately on social media and then walking away from contracts/ the table to stew in silence and inactivity while living off their last paycheck for a lack luster fight, and finally, coked out promoters acting like used car salesman over hyping rookies based on social media followings.. and might actually be getting wood while entertaining a scenario. Where one guy takes out spence (the guy that cares about money --than his health), shuts up the all mouth/ less skilled charlo sisters, and then goes up to an unheard of ridiculous weight and possible takes out the face of boxing... and creates a rip in the time/space continuum that undoes the boxing universe... leaving it to start anew (maybe with a union). Bonus being a red faced floyd trying to argue the fact that his place is boxing history was essentially dwarfed by another fighter in essentially 3 moves because he still has money. - sure there will always be some gen z casual that Will say he ran from Davis (the guy eats 75 dollars worth of candy a week out from a fight) but its par for the course... I'd open a beach chair, drink a beer and revel in the middle of the utter chaos it creates...;D
Honestly the 3 fight undercard is what really makes this one ;D. Barrios at 147 still a question mark but he fills out and physical to match. Rojas v Lubin is a true throwback top contender face off and think we'll find out exactly what fast rising Elijah Garcia is or is not made of v Resendiz. Very solid undercard for once.
I am going to go against the grain on here. I say Canelo wins easy with a dominant display in to the 12th round. On paper the level of opponents, the amount of opponents, The experience at the ripe age of prime 33 vs the experience at the ripe age of 33 of Charlo's history. The weight jump for charlo etc
I will be very surprised if we have an upset tonight but i do love a good upset so i hope charlo can prove me wrong.
