Jaime Munguia v John Ryder
Britain’s John Ryder says he will walk away from boxing if he loses to Mexican Jaime Munguia in Phoenix this weekend.
Ryder, who faces Munguia (42-0, 33KOs) in the super-middleweight division on Saturday night, will be looking to bounce back from a unanimous decision defeat to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez last May.
And the Londoner, who would not be willing to fight at a lower level if he is not victorious, is hoping he can cause an upset and spoil Munguia’s plans of a date with fellow Mexican Alvarez later this year.
“It really wouldn’t be ideal if I picked up two losses,” Ryder told the PA news agency. “I’ve been in this predicament before, where I have come from defeat so it’s a must-win.
“I need to win this to continue my career. A loss here would signal the end for me. I’m not willing to drop down levels and fight at a lower grade.
“I want to go out at a level I know I can operate at.
“They’re priming Munguia to fight Canelo in May and I’m looking to spoil that party.”
The 35-year-old, nicknamed ‘The Gorilla’, believes the knowledge garnered from previous fights will stand him in good stead when the pair meet at the Footprint Center.
I need to win this to continue my career. A loss here would signal the end for me.
“I’ve got more experience,” said Ryder (32-6, 18KOs). “I know it sounds strange because I have had less fights than him but I’ve got a vast experience at this level.
“Experience is one of those things you can’t buy.
“I’ve been in with many different styles, I’ve been in the away corner before so it’s nothing new to me and I have all the balls in my court.”
Hard-hitting Munguia has developed into a feared super-middleweight foe, having stopped three of his last four opponents, and Ryder feels he needs to take the fight to the 27-year-old.
“He’s had it his own way so far so I’m going to take it to him, stick it on him in the middle of the ring,” the Briton added.
“I can’t let him push me back like he wants to do or let him get in a rhythm and fight his fight.
“He’s got a high work-rate with a good variation of punches. I wouldn’t say he’s massively quick but he throws a lot of shots so it’s going to be hard to keep the movement going and to keep rolling.
“I’m not expecting no easy rides, I learnt that (what it’s like to fight a Mexican) from fighting Canelo. I’m not expecting an easy night’s work but I am expecting to be victorious.”

Re: Jaime Munguia v John Ryder
Does Mungia have weight problems? He went from Jr Welter to Super Middle... just like that. He has a very quiet 42 fights... But I can't say he has been in a noteworthy fight outside of Tureano Johnson and that was years ago. He should have a title now or at least a world title shot. What is the situation with Mungia?

Re: Jaime Munguia v John Ryder
His fight with Derevyanchenko was outstanding
Although the decision could have gone either way
I think Munguia's got another difficult fight here
De La Hoya better get those judges envelopes ready ;D

Re: Jaime Munguia v John Ryder
Was thinking about getting this but can't bring myself to pull the trigger on Dazn again even at monthly rates. It's not a bad match up at all and the weigh in should be very interesting. Come fight night if Munguia isn't borderline cruiserweight I'll be surprised.

Re: Jaime Munguia v John Ryder
To me it was easy to pick Munguia
Low output slow brawler against a high output faster brawler.

Re: Jaime Munguia v John Ryder
Streams went tits up but sounds like dominance by Munguia. Thanks for the live time info TIC have to check it out. Did notice that somehow it immediately translated into Munguia getting a Canelo slot now ;D. Personally and levels instant excitement wise, Munguia vs Mbilli would be insane!

Re: Jaime Munguia v John Ryder
I thought Ryder would put up a much sterner test
He always earns his money though
It was a career best win for Munguia
I didn't see much improvement in his performance, his head is still very stationary :-X
And Ryder already had one foot out the door
I'd like to see the Munguia vs. Berlanga fight next :D

Re: Jaime Munguia v John Ryder
Munguia looked bigger and Ryder tried his best but took a beating. Fought bravely as he did against Canelo.
Everyone wants Canelo which is why Ryder can make some more money because he went the distance with him.

The measuring stick application. Sounds like Ryder is calling it a day but he'll get another call. Especially since some are calling it Munguias best win, but I still side with Derevyanchenko there.

i also think sergiy is jaime's best win but he didn't fight the smartest fight & the late knockdown just pulled it out for him. david morrell & christian mbilli are two guys hardly anyone calls out in the division, maybe they should fight

Re: Jaime Munguia v John Ryder
Ryder announced that while he is retiring, he will remain in the sport as a coach in trainer Tony Sims gym.
He said: "It is with a heavy heart that I have come to the decision to hang up my gloves and retire from professional boxing.
"I've been absolutely blessed to have the most amazing career over the past 14 years. Starting in Bethnal Green in 2010 and ending in Phoenix, Arizona.
"I've been lucky enough to box everywhere from the 02 Arena, T-Mobile in Vegas, Alexandra Palace, Manchester Arena to Guadalajara in Mexico. For a boy from Islington, it's been some run.
"Although I didn't manage to win that world title, I've achieved and experienced more than I could ever have imagined when I first put on a pair of boxing gloves and I wouldn't change that for any belt.
"I'd like to thank the whole team and Matchroom, especially Eddie, Barry and Frank.
"My trainer and manager Tony and Charlie Sims and my S&C coach Dan Lawrence for their constant support.
"And of course, my loving family, my partner Nancy, kids Heidi and Brody, who have given me the strongest 'why' possible over the last decade in this sport. I'm so blessed to have you all in my corner.
"Finally, although my professional career as a boxer is now over, the sport won't be able to get rid of me that easily and I look forward to officially starting my new career as a coach working alongside Tony at the Matchroom Gym very shortly.
"There's no place like home, thanks again, John 'The Gorilla' Ryder."

Re: Jaime Munguia v John Ryder
Happy story really. A very decent Boxer and man that had some good pay days in a good career and wants to give something back. A gentleman and hopefully he has a happy retirement.
