Pernell would have beaten floyd easily
Playing video games the other night and me beating up on floyd with pernell whitaker made me think how pernell is one of the greates forgotten fighters who was unchallenged in his prime, and how people do not rember him because of how boring his fights were, my friend said who is this guy your beting me with you never heard of sweet pea whitaker? After seeing zab mayweather Id have to say pernell whitaker would have beaten and frustrated floyd mayweather,

Re: Pernell would have beaten floyd easily
Whitaker wins in his prime as a 135lber, but I doubt he could beat Lil Floyd at 147lbs though. ;)

Re: Pernell would have beaten floyd easily
brit kid I agrre with that!
-
Re: Pernell would have beaten floyd easily
Pac got to agree prime for prime, he just did things defensivley in their that was out of this world and Ill always remeber seeing pernells big white eyes non blinking sitting in the pocket not be touched, he had awesome reflexes eye site
-
Re: Pernell would have beaten floyd easily
There is one intangible to this fight... 'Uncle' Roger floored near prime Sweat Pea, so maybe he knows something about Whitaker's style, to give Lil Floyd an edge?
-
Re: Pernell would have beaten floyd easily
Whitker also was known to not train for fights and later abused drugs thats no excuse but it makes you wonder how good he could have been. I just see whitaker taking 1-5 much like zab but with much better defense, against whitaker floyd would never get going though, and would be trying to play catch up later, pernell too good for that and wins a unimous but not completly dominate decsion

Re: Pernell would have beaten floyd easily
Good memory Britkid uncle Roger had Pernell down and hurt after Pernell tried to get cute, and pulled Rogers trunks down, well roger got pissed and almost knocked him out.

Re: Pernell would have beaten floyd easily
But he didn't, Whitaker came back and won the fight. I don't think Floyd has the old school grit of Roger either, but he has a better chin ;D But not as hard a right hand. I think Pernell beats Floyd easily as it has been shown he has trouble with someone who A) makes Floyd come forward and B) has quick hands. I think Pernell's jab would dominate Floyd.

Re: Pernell would have beaten floyd easily
anyone got any footage of Pernell, never seen him fight funnily enough

Re: Pernell would have beaten floyd easily
what game where you playing

Cool Click, good posting.Agreed 100% apart from maybe the quick hands as Castillo does not have quick hands but he beat Floyd the first time.

:coolclick: Agreed. Pernell would probably never hurt him, but outpoint him almost every round

Yeah for real, what game where u playing with floyd n pernell

Re: Pernell would have beaten floyd easily
I think that Pernell had better defense than Mayweather has now, but not Mayweather's old style. Also Pernell would be picked apart by Mayweather's speed which is way faster than anyone who ever fought Pernell. Oscar Dela Hoya was able to land on Pernell a few times, and Mayweather is much much faster than ODLH ever was. He would counter Pernell or lead and be to fast. Its like James Toney could counter almost anyone in the world even Nunn, but when he fought RJJ, Jones was just too much faster for him to counter at all.

No jab has ever dominated Floyd, and PBF has faster reflexes than Pernell has quick hands.

Re: Pernell would have beaten floyd easily
I'm guessing Pacdog made those CABs himself, I know I did.

Yeah same, thank God we're at least getting ESPN classic in England now, that shows loads of old boxing although mostly heavyweight. Boxing coverage over here is just piss poor. If I end up rich, I'm sorting it out, it needs to be done, Britian loves its boxing, fighting is in our blood, just go to any city centre on a Friday night and you'll see how much ;D
Anyway, I got sidetracked, where can me and The_One77 get good footage of Pernell?

Re: Pernell would have beaten floyd easily
Mayweather wins a chess match decision.
-
Re: Pernell would have beaten floyd easily
Mayweather even says that Pernell would "kill" him in his prime. And when you get PBF to admit defeat when he says he could beat his own father easily...then I know Pernell would beat PBF. Sweet Pea got the quickest jab of anyone Floyd's fought and he would change up so many things he'd catch Floyd in between feints and be out feinting Floyd. And Pernell had better defense AND reflexes then Floyd.

Re: Pernell would have beaten floyd easily
Robinson said Armstrong would have beaten him in his prime, it's called a fighter showing respect to his elders. And no offense but you also said Floyd would lose to Sharmba Mitchell, then you said Floyd would lose to Zab Judah, so when it comes to predicting fights with Floyd you ain't too bright :lickish:

Re: Pernell would have beaten floyd easily
I dont think he said that because he boasted of beaing able to beat sugar ray leonard not ahumble statement. Im sure those are great matchups whitaker leonard mayweather but please dont compare zab Judah to sugar ray or whitaker hes not in the same league .

Re: Pernell would have beaten floyd easily
Whitake would beat Floyd. Like I said, Whitaker had a very fast jab and very awkward angles and he would out feint Floyd. He would do what he did to any other he woulf feint them out of position and Mayweather as defensively sound would fall for some of those feints. And the fact that Whitaker's jab is faster then anything Floyd could throw or reach him with, i'm inclined to believe that Whitaker beats Floyd 9 rounds to 3 ;)
-
Re: Pernell would have beaten floyd easily
Chess match, hard to call since Floyd's handspeed and technique could give Pernell some real problems, but I'd lean towards Pernell by a 7-5 decision with some very close rounds
-
Re: Pernell would have beaten floyd easily
Yeah, I understand how some of you think Floyd would win, but I just don't see it.
There has NEVER been a more elusive boxer, SweetP was an absolute ghost and his total defensive package would make Floyd's little shoulder roll look amateurish.
Consider that (IMO) P beat JCC (even though they robbed him and called it a draw)
worse than PBF beat Castillo (a fight that maybe should have been a draw) and Castillo is no Chavez.

thank you sums it up

Re: Pernell would have beaten floyd easily
However coincident, Jose Luis Castillo was JCC sparring partner and was seen in many of his latter fights.

He would not out feint Mayweather..., and his jab is quikc, but not fast at all. No way do his reflexes match Mayweather's... Pernell never fought anybody fast... Put him against early Meldrick Taylor I think he loses. Mayweather is way faster comming in than Whitaker was especially when he was in the 130-135 region in size. Mayweather hardly ever falls for feints, and how he fights if you feint on him you will get countered badly. Nobody has ever had the twitch reflexes possessed by Mayweather who can move his upper body so fast that he can lean back then snap foreward faster than most people including Whitaker could just come foreward.
-
Re: Pernell would have beaten floyd easily
Mayweather is real fast but watching him he doesnt compare to say roy jones who has freaky hanspeed. Mayweather has stupid shoulder roll and he turns his back in the ring, a good fighter would punch him in the back each time he did that bull!!!. Their is a difference between quickness and hanspeed, mayweather has great handpseed and is elusiv eon nhis feet. Whitaker was quick on his feet and had great ring genral ship, angles sitting in the pocket making you miss, he was adefensive master, Whitaker made chavez look foolish a fighter ten times bette rthan castillo who mayweather struggled with enough said

Mayweather still wouldn't hit him. ESPECIALLY at 135. And Pernell is a southpaw who rarely if ever got hit with a right hand ;)
