Why is Hatton so popular in Britain compared to
All the past fighters? I think the Eubank, Calzaghe, Lewis, Collins were all better p4p than him, and Nigel Benn was more exciting. So how is it that Hatton is the one who is so liked by everyone in Britain and around the world in general? Most british boxers have miles of more class than american fighters Benn, Eubank, and Calzaghe among them so why is Hatton liked more?

Re: Why is Hatton so popular in Britain compared to

Hatton is a diamond geezer, but make no bones about it, he lacks the popularity of Bruno and Cooper (by far the top two) or Benn and Eubank.
But then the sport is not as popular as it was in the 80s and early 90s.
He is more popular than Naseem, because he comes across on TV (rightly or wrongly) as a much nicer person.
As for Joe, like Lewis he gets a deep, deep respect, but because he is a sheep shagging wop ;D, he lacks that hero quality, because the English cannot have a Celt hero ;)
I hope you realise, this is done deeply tongue in cheek, I mean the Welsh are very nice people...away from sheep :P

How old are you? These guys were all far more well known to the general public in their prime than Hatton is at the moment!

depends how u wanna define popular? popular as in more known - no way. absolutely everyone i knew was talkin about Naseem Hamed in his hey day. no one talks about hatton outside of boxing, they just know he's an 'alrite fighter from manchester'.
popular as in more liked - yes u are definately right. though Naz did have his fans.

Popular, as in more liked, is indeed what I meant, I would agree Naseem is more known by the general public, in his pomp.

Fighting ability is one of the last things that fight fans care about, Ricky is Gutsy in the ring. Works for 100% of the fight and is a down to earth bloke.
-
Re: Why is Hatton so popular in Britain compared to
Ricky is a very good figher and very underrated skill wise Plus hes a very nice kid
-
Re: Why is Hatton so popular in Britain compared to
Hatton is P4P one of the best we've had too, Calzaghe isn't really a man of the people even though he's an amazing boxer and a genuinly nice guy aswell I hear. Plus dominant fighters tend not to be in such good fights. Bruno and Benn were definatly more popular in the mainstream.
-
Re: Why is Hatton so popular in Britain compared to
Hatton
1. Heis the real deal. He beat the best champion in the divison.
2. He has the ability and style that makes us wanna watch him.
3. If you hear his interviews, you will know that he has bags of charisma.
4. He has the coolest intro song, since the one played when Nigel Benn lost to Watson.
-
Re: Why is Hatton so popular in Britain compared to
Hatton is NOWHERE NEAR as popular as Benn and Eubank outside of Manchester. I don't know what planet your on if you believe Hatton is anything close to the popularity of what Benn and Eubank were, obviously you don't live in Britain.

I think that that is the Sky factor, he beat one of the best boxers in the world and wasnt even in the top 3 British personalitys of the year, but he won the best boxer of 2005 award from nearly everyone in the States, it's a pity he wont be fighting on Itv because his style would make him so popular.

I disagree not man people would know hatton outside boxing.
everyone knew benn and eubank back in the goldern era
naz was more popular aswell even though he's a twat
collins is irish by the way
-
Re: Why is Hatton so popular in Britain compared to
Ricky is a down to earth guy but like has been said not many non-boxing fans are familiar with his achievements outside of USA.
I have friends who are aware of him but don't know that he is world champ or the calibre of fighter in Tszyu he beat to get it.
I guess its cos all main bouts are now on SKY - mostly on box office.
Benn and Eubanks rivalry captured the nation and made them household names. They both owe a lot to each other. They also started on ITV fight night with Reg Gutteridge !
Wasn't around in Cooper's era and know little about it except the night he floored Clay, so don't really know the extent of his popularity.
But Bruno's popularity as a fighter in Britain is unlikely ever to be matched. He was lovable and funny - and I think deep down we all knew he was shite ! ;)
But who will ever forget the nation screaming for him to hold McCall in the final round as he got the win, Harry Carpenter exclaiming "get in there Frank" when he hurt Tyson in their first bout and the disappointment when he folded in their second clash.

Re: Why is Hatton so popular in Britain compared to
all my paddy mates who arnt even boxing fans know about collins, mcguigan, mcgee. and they are majorly biased aswell. but most average joe's in the street know who ricky hatton is. even if they cant name 1 heavy weight champ at the momment
-
Re: Why is Hatton so popular in Britain compared to
I think it's all to do with the internet.
The internet was not so popular when Eubank and Benn was about.
You say Hatton is big in the U.S but only amoungst us boxing fans. If you went out onto the street and asked somebody they'd probably not know who he was
-
Re: Why is Hatton so popular in Britain compared to
while i feel ricky is overrated--particularly on this board (where benn and eubank still get about 4 threads a day and neither has thrown a punch in almost a decade) US fans will like him cuz he comes to fight and has an all action style........i

It might have something to do with Hatton currently being an active fighter whereas those guys are long retired ;)

Yeah - that explains why people like Jenna Jameson, Inari Vachs and Guage are so popular over here as well (!!) ;D

Re: Why is Hatton so popular in Britain compared to
Hatton is nowhere near as popular as Eubank or Benn, they had 42,000 people watch their fight at Manchester Uniteds stadium.
Only 22,000 people watched Hatton fight Tszyu, a genuine world title fight against a genuine legend
-
Re: Why is Hatton so popular in Britain compared to
Outside of boxing Hatton isn't even a celebrity in Britain, nor Joe Calzaghe.
By the far the most popular fighter in Britain now is Amir Khan. Completely underserved in my opinion, I mean he didn't even win the olympics but there you go.
I judge a fighter's true fame by whether or not my mum has heard of them.
Trust me she doesn't have a clue who Ricky Hatton is, had never heard of Joe Calzaghe until I made her watch the Lacy fight when she came over for dinner a few weeks ago and hadn't even heard of Amir Khan :-\
Yet she could recognise Frank Bruno even by just hearing his voice and she knows who Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn are.
I think Henry Cooper and Bruno are the only two boxers to have ever truly crossed over from boxing to mainstream celebrity in the uk, then Benn and Eubank, and for sadder reasons Michael Watson are probably the best know fighters in the uk along with Khan.

The main reason for this was because that was the capacity, the 22000 sold out in less than 3 hours. Like i say it's due to exposure nothing to do with there personality or skills, it's just unfortunate Sky had Boxing monopolised for the last 10 or so years.

ONLY 22000? How many people were at Judah vs Mayweather. Plus, everyone knows that fight would have easily sold 50,000 tickets in a few days. No one can deny hatton's pulling power. Just wait till you see boston!

had hatton fought tszyu outdoors in a football stadium it would have sold out. no doubt about it. u see when he eventually fights at a british football stadium (gotta fight at man city one day). even for a voluntary defence it will pack out

If Warren thought hed have got 42,000 he would have got old trafford like he did for Benn Eubank
