Something I noticed about alot of current southpaws.
People just don't seem to like them as a whole... especially the current top ones because of one reason or another yet each one is arguably the best at their weight class.
Byrd:one of the most hated heavyweights out there.
Tarver: Good fighter IMO, and if he could keep his mouth shut would deserve to be almost as popular as he thinks he is.
Calzaghe: Just recently has gotten the respect he deserves, but his work has always been overshadowed.
Wright: Great skilled fighter who due to his style not skill has been shunned by alot of the more bloodthirsty boxing fans because he prefers to dominate an opponent than take chances and try to ko them.
Pacquiao: I never thought he got the respect he deserved for a long time, and I think alot of people underestimate him because of where he is from as opposed to what he has accomplished.
Calderon: Due to his weight catagory, and lack of power it seems he just doesn't get the publicity he deserves IMO.
Judah:Not the best in his division as PBF proved, but still extremely skilled and quick unfortunately his attitude and disrespect of others have left his status as infamous.
Call me crazy, but I think southpaws are taking over industry faster than the Brits.
Other guys in the recent past who deserve credit as southpaws
Pernell Whitaker: I think he didn't get the respect he deserved for his skill, but also he did drugs which didn't help anything.
Marvin Hagler: Easily as good as any of the other four greats in his time, but he was still overshadowed simply because he lost to Leonard, and he didn't have the media friendly character that the others possessed.
Michael Nunn: drugs or he would have been an ATG.
Reggie Johnson: He was very skilled, but he was in a time of very good middlewegihts and smw, but I think he could have stood in there with pretty anyone either than Roy Jones Jr. when he was at his best.
There are probably loads more, but its just a courious thing that I noticed.

Re: Something I noticed about alot of current southpaws.
Tarver is a let down.
Because the way he opens his mouth we expect the next Muhammad Ali in devastating fashion to win all his fights spectacularly.
But then Tarver goes and sparks out after 6 rounds and can barely move like a strong wind can blow him down. He looked like Glen Johnson was about to stop him in the 11th round of their rematch.
If Tarver was a quiet type and didn't talk he would be appreciated more, but he talks a lot so we expect a lot and when we don't get it, he's a let down.
Re: Something I noticed about alot of current southpaws.
Oooops,I did not even see Tarver in the list! I have a really really big dislike of Tarver and apart from power,I do not see what else he has. His stamina is pathetic,he went life and death with with the journeyman Johnson and beat an aold RJJ,and he has a really big ass mouth which I hope B-Hop shuts!!!!

CC,but seriously,I laugh when I see him on P4P lists!
Re: Something I noticed about alot of current southpaws.
P4P has so many meanings nowadays. Tarver should be on p4p lists because of his dominance at light heavy. But he should be lower because he is fighting hopkins..and not adameck or briggs or drews etc..
Tarver wanted to fight Tyson right.
Didn't Tarver rip into Roy Jones Jr for trying to fight Tyson a few years ago??? So why did Tarver call Tyson out. Is he a hypocrite...did he realise he'd never get a payday unless Roy fought him again ??? Is he really just a hoper who got famous because his style beat Roy ??? Is he Vernon Forrest ??? Is Briggs Mayorga ???
;)
Re: Something I noticed about alot of current southpaws.
I believe regardless of which criteria you are using,he should not be on any P4P lists, simply because the LHW division is pathetically weak! and remember he is 1-1 with Johnson so he is not dominating! and he is fighting a B-Hop how many pounds lighter than him and a B-Hop far past his prime.

The Game... I don't think Tarver has that good of power... He throws good combinations and he is quick if anything... He is also got at getting shots off on the inside considering his height which he knows how to use, and he's got a solid defense... I don't see why people think he's such a bad fighter.
Re: Something I noticed about alot of current southpaws.
Well I wouldnt say tarver is a bad fighter. He's just a horrible guy for people to call the man to beat in the division. Tarver is about 65% goods, 35% talk. If he was more quiet, he probably would get little to no recognition, based on his skills. His talk is his way of inflating himself so people pay attention to him and his way of trying to force people to believe he's as great as he thinks he is.
Most people have a clear understanding of what his achievements are and whats just a lot of unecessary talking. To just watch his fights, he can be percieved as an above average fighter with an awkward tall southpaw style, but as angel eyes said, his mouth constantly gets him in trouble and if anything makes him seem like the biggest underachiever ever. He's not really a dominant champ and raises more questions about himself than anyone else can. His claim to fame and shining achievement was beating RJJ. Everyone after seeing his fights with glen johnson, his third fight with Jones, his calling out a retired tyson (who quit against mcbride) , his five minute movie career and his decision that his next fight should be Hopkins (who lost his last 2 fights officially and is coming up in weight 15 lbs) makes even the people on his bandwagon say whuh? Somehow I think most people expected more out of the guy who beat Jones. Especially the people that claim jones was in his prime when Tarver beat him. ::**
Re: Something I noticed about alot of current southpaws.
u know what ...southpaws unless u know how to box them or have a nakc for boxing them (like kostya tsu)..they r difficult to box ...and they have actually alwasy been despised they play the part of a matador usually and can be so slick there kinda boring ...especially if they are naturally right handed and just use it to land the jab & keep moving to the right
Re: Something I noticed about alot of current southpaws.
:( sucks that I'm southpaw then.
Re: Something I noticed about alot of current southpaws.
Paul Briggs would knock tarver out IMO

No way IMO... Tomasz Adamek beat him, and tho undefeated he was a nobody. so was Paul Briggs who never really faced anyone. Antonio has pretty good fight resume even for like 27 fights or something he had harding twice, Glen Johnson twice, Roy Jones Jr. three times, and Reggie Johnson still his record is the same as Paul Briggs more or less.

Except he has been given more chances the paul. And if you watch the adamek fight paul was cut by a headbutt in the second round or something and the fight went 12 rounds so he pretty much had bloody pissing out of him for 12 rounds and flowing into his eye. Even with that when ever he seemed to hit cleanly admaek was hurt. We could of seen paul vs tarver if tarver hadnt of been obsessed with fighting johnson just coz he beat a shot roy jones too. Paul would beat tarver!
