Leading to the body?
Is it good to sometimes lead with a low jab to the body? Ive heard this is bad if you dont retreat quickly enough. Theres a pro at my gym who starts low and weaves around the counters every time he spars, but he's pretty quick. Bad habit to get into?

Re: Leading to the body?
I wouldn't make a habit of it. FAR too easy to get knocked out, and really isn't worth the risk. Cost:Benefit ratio > j00.
But yeah, better throwing in a body shot with a combo....better chance of landing and lesser chance of eating an uppercut.

Re: Leading to the body?
I've always been of the opinion that the best body punches, in terms of risk and effect, come off of counters. For example the straight right to the heart by slipping inside a jab or a left hook to the solar plexus by slipping outside the jab. That said I also favor the jab to the body in certain spots.
The first would be against a much shorter opponent- get low and jab his chest. (check Bob Foster against Dick Tiger for a reference)He can't move his chest like his head. The second time would be as a set up. Jab to the body , knowing he's looking to counter with the right- then just bring it up- your left hand. Just bring it up, hit him on the chin because nobody can throw the right without at some point exposing his chin.

Re: Leading to the body?
You could get something different out of it by using it for a set up.
Some rare oppertunities can open up from firing a shot straight into the crook of someones arm, above their elbow if they drop it, as the arm retreats or as they turn away or sometimes even as they come forwards right on the end of a movment. Not as a scoring shot or a damage shot but as a set up shot for a reaction that you can utilize your reflexes onto as you move in further on them.

Re: Leading to the body?
I tried that in a fight once Andre... was trying to open him up for a right hook to the body... first shot I threw...
He probably shouldn't of left his jab out for so long after I slipped it and PUT HIS HANDS UP

Re: Leading to the body?
Yeah its one of those things that could go any way if you dont head out bodily towards what your doing and crack the other fist up his centre as you go.
I've seen that glove caught in the crook of the elbow and the fight ends up just between the other free arms for a few shots until the ref comes around to break it ; thats why its nice to head out that same side if you do it, so your away from his other arm to begin with.

Re: Leading to the body?
like alot of you said i believe it would be a great set up punch cuz if there abs arent trained which of course in the sport of boxing there abs will be trained but if there not solid jab to the abs then a swift hook to the chin ;D

Re: Leading to the body?
Most peoples arms drop enough (to set them up for another move) just on the reaction of a shot going through any opening ,whether they trained to take it or not.

Re: Leading to the body?
Ok SO i Was Wrong ;D
But I still Might Try This Combo Out ;D

Re: Leading to the body?
I think your right, but what you said counts after the first time you've tried it.
2nd time around doesnt get the same reaction.

Re: Leading to the body?
yeah just like when just throwing the jab they get use to your rythem and counter so you gotta be a well rounded fighter with all kinds of differant rythems :)

Re: Leading to the body?
I think the most risky lead punch I have ever see was in some old Ray Robinson tapes where he leads with uppercuts....
-
Re: Leading to the body?
lol but think how killer that wold be to come out with an uppercut and your oppenet deffinantly not expecting it hes like oh hes gonna come out jabbing bam huge uppercut
I Think A Hook Is A Weird Leading Punch I Saw One Of The Guys On An Ali Tape that i have I think His Name Was Williams Or Something Liek that But Ali Knocked Him Down then He came Back Up And Tried To Hit Him A Leader Hook And Missed And I Think He Ate Shit After That :)

Re: Leading to the body?
IMO unless you know you are a hell of a lot faster than your opp you take chances leading in with stuff like that.....
