Underrated Punchers that pounded out a victory
Whitaker vs Mayweather.
We know of Pernell more as an illusive counter puncher, but revisiting his win over Roger showed a boxer who hadn't mastered his skill set. As a result he stood in the pocket and exchanged often.
Setting down on his shots.
PW pounded out the victory
Little known fighter named Deandre Lattimore an up in comer deemed fit to end a shell of Light hitting Cory Spinks' career brought out the best in SP.
After couple of rustfilled rounds, Cory with no legs, bad timing went into beast mode setting down on his shots and pounded out a victory.
IMO 2 examples of boxers not known for power, but actually won in such fashion in crunch time
Re: Underrated Punchers that pounded out a victory
Joe Calzaghe v Lacy and Hopkins where he went machine gun mode and threw a million punches.
Kassim Ouma was a light hitting southpaw who fought hard hitting Kofi Jantuah in the pocket and beat him. It was a suicidal move but worked due to Ouma work rate and heart.
Re: Underrated Punchers that pounded out a victory
Seemed like Paulie Malinaggi may have juiced up when he took on Cotto's brother, really landed some shots that he didn't land before not after.
And Bojado last fight, Stevie Forbes really sat down on his shots, I think it was a career best performance. What a shame Francesco lost to him, but it wasn't a sloppy or bad showing.
Forbes absorbed every shot and fired hard counters. Seemed like a power puncher that night.
Winky Wright known as a jabber, but he and Jermaine Taylor traded some hard shots. IMO, he could've won, but he let that 12th round slip away.
His guard got compromised, but he retaliated well. Not like his win over Tito with a superb jab....in this one, a nice fight broke out and yet another average puncher that even swelled up Bad Intentions
Re: Underrated Punchers that pounded out a victory
Sweat Pea knocked down, behind on points had to take out undefeated Cuban Diosbelys Hurtado.

First fight that popped in my mind was the first fight between Eric Harding and Antonio Tarver. We all know what Tarver’s punch can do, and Harding glued himself to his chest and overwhelmed him with volume. If I remember correctly, Harding broke Antonio’s ribs in that fight, mainly through sheer volume and accumulation.

Forgot about that, what about Glenn Johnson v Tarver the first time?

Re: Underrated Punchers that pounded out a victory
I thought it was the jaw as well, but whatever it was He broke something, who would've guessed he could do it?
Re: Underrated Punchers that pounded out a victory
When Ishida slept Kirkland lmao
Re: Underrated Punchers that pounded out a victory
Sven Ottka koing Tony Mundine.

I was watching that where Mundine was out boxing Ottke and on his way to taking the title. Sven, who never stops anyone, ko's him. Very shocking.
Re: Underrated Punchers that pounded out a victory
Vince Phillips beating Tszyu in his prime, that was pounding out a victory.

Malignaggi also stopped Senchenko to win the welterweight title in the champions backyard.
Re: Underrated Punchers that pounded out a victory
Great topic. I'm still trying to figure out how Virgil Hill turned brutal starter and annihilated Tiozzo in first round of their rematch. Maybe only his 3rd ko in about 8 years :-X. Ivan Robinson wasn't a major hitter but went to war with Gatti in a true classic but that was probably his inner Philly coming out ;D. I remember the relatively green pro Sergio Reyes bringing his 3 kos in with a near prime Orlando Canizales and more than holding his own (had him winning) over 12 up close buzz saw rounds.
Re: Underrated Punchers that pounded out a victory
Rockin Rodney Moore was a light puncher then he went on a mad KO run as a contender.
Re: Underrated Punchers that pounded out a victory
Was going through some old score sheets and reminded of Paul Vaden turning it on late and koing Vincent Pettway. Pettway before and after was always thought to be almost to nice and 'clean' for the sport and a very capable boxer off the jab. He pretty much came from obscurity to grab Pettways title and proved brutal throwing combinations in the championship rounds. Pettway came in that night fresh off one of the more devastating KO's you'll ever see when he left Simon Brown flat on his back still throwing punches in the air :-X. Vaden went back into conservative safety boxer mode losing his next fight out v Terry Norris but became very successful post boxing always wearing a big smile.

LMAO! I'm still not sure what to call that fight there! Took bombs from Joel Julio, even Angulo hit him harder in that first round then did ishida, yet...man, I dunno! LMAO! funny example, but you're right!!!
Re: Underrated Punchers that pounded out a victory
Ishida vs kirkland was hilarious. Only explanation is he came out bone dry and was clipped in a weird way that just threw his equilibrium off completely, I guess:confused:
Does anyone remember that video where they showed highlights of the boxer taking punishment but completely edited out the opponent? I cant remember if it was Kirkland or Angulo against Canelo, one of the two. It would be priceless to see the same thing done for Kirkland against Ishida.

On a similar note the light puncher Calvin Grove knocked out Jeff Fenech who also came in bone dry.
Re: Underrated Punchers that pounded out a victory
Does Tevin Farmer fit? 29 wins 6 kos? Only seen highlight reels which reminds me a bit of Tim Bradley from a physique standpoint. Muscular with no one punch KO power.
I just perused Bradley's record and didn't realize outside of 2 TKO's he went his last decade without a straight KO.
While I don't think Devon Alexander was a light hitter, I did think he didn't have the pop to match his muscles. Another boxer who went 10 years without even a TKO: over Juan Urango in 2010. He's scheduled per boxrec to fight in Sn Jacinto??

That was a superbly nasty KO. I think it was more right place at the right time for Grove though who was an accurate hitter. Fenech was on the end and off long layoff after Nelson tore him to utter shreds in their rematch. Ishida and Grove were fast punchers, it looked like Kirkland was literally short circuited off his rapid fire combos.
