Shakur Stevenson v Oscar Valdez
Shakur Stevenson versus Oscar Valdez would be 'a corker' of a fight, according to Bob Arum.
Top Rank CEO Arum reportedly wants to pit the two against one another in April in Las Vegas - which coincides with ESPN's plans to broadcast the annual NFL draft in Sin City.
Canelo Alvarez's teammate Valdez - who in 2021 knocked out Miguel Berchelt after ten rounds in what was considered a major upset at the time - recently courted controversy after testing positive for the banned substance phentermine ahead of his fight against Robson Conceicao.
Meanwhile, Stevenson, 24, is widely seen as the second coming of Floyd Mayweather. In five years as a professional, Stevenson has amassed an impressive unblemished record, with nine of his 17 victories coming by knockout.
Promoter Arum confirmed to World Boxing News WBO super-featherweight champion Stevenson will face WBC titleholder Valdez to unify their belts in their first fight of 2022, with the winner then expected to face featherweight champ Emanuel Navarrete.
He said: “Shakur, I think the fight for him is against Valdez and that would be a corker and I’d love to get that fight done.
“That’s what we’re looking to do, yeah. I think before the end of April.
“Other people in the company are doing the negotiations and I don’t think there will be any roadblocks.”
Stevenson, who spent the weekend partying with Jake Paul, tops the Ring Magazine's latest super-featherweight rankings, after his masterful performance against Jamel Herring.
The Olympic silver medallist put in a dominant display against the former US Marine three months ago at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.
After an initial feeling-out process, the American started to turn up the heat as he repeatedly beat Herring to the punch and captured the belt in the process.
Speaking after the fight, he said: "There's only one fight left, the biggest fight in the division.
"Oscar can't keep ducking! It's time to fight!
"Me versus Oscar, there is nothing else to look forward to.
"The 130lbs division needs to unify, so let's get it.
"I want to be a superstar in the sport.
"I take my craft seriously, I am disciplined, I had a strong camp.
"I want to thank Tim Bradley who criticised me and called me boring.
"So I wanted to perform in a fun fight - to show my skills, my defence, my power. I showed everything.
"Around the fifth round, I had landed everything and was winning clearly. Then he tried to come on. I thought: 'I will take a break then step it up later.'"

Oscar Valdez vs Shakur Stevenson - 30/4/22
Oscar Valdez and Shakur Stevenson will be colliding on Saturday 30th April 2022.
The Junior Lightweight Title unification match is being brought to boxing fans by Top Rank, and it looks set to be a barnburner from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
With this being a unification bout, both the WBO and WBC titles will be on the line, with the winner set to be crowned the undisputed Junior Lightweight Champion of the world.
Here’s everything you need to know about the current betting odds for the Junior Lightweight Title unification fight between Oscar Valdez and Shakur Stevenson.
The two fighters had their first face-to-face on Wednesday 9th March 2022 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas alongside Top Rank’s Bob Arum.
Top Rank sent out the following press release regarding the contest and the first face-to-face for the two men:
“Less than eight weeks from fight night, the two went face to face Wednesday morning at MGM Grand. Tensions did not spill over, but the two undefeated champions exchanged not-so-pleasant pleasantries. Valdez (30-0, 23 KOs), the two-weight champion from Nogales, Mexico, enters as the betting underdog for only the second time in his career.
“The first time, Valdez knocked out Miguel Berchelt in devastating fashion. Stevenson (17-0, 9 KOs), in his fifth bout at junior lightweight, hopes a victory will vault him up the mythical pound-for-pound rankings.

Re: Shakur Stevenson v Oscar Valdez
Credit where credits due on Top rank putting them both up. Do think if Shakur develops a mean streak and asserts off of athletic southpaw advantages, he could do a number on a few guys and favor over Valdez. The lumps and welts on his mug will be aplenty. But this isn't Jamel Herring and he's not faced anything close to the compact power and depth of a Valdez. Looking forward to this big time.

Re: Shakur Stevenson v Oscar Valdez
Undercard consists of one Nico Ali Walsh :cwm13: and awesome lightweight prospect 4-0 Keyshawn Davis vs 18-0 Esteban Sanchez in 'special' attraction showcases.
About time we have fights on "regular" espn. Let's just hope it's not delayed by College Softball or semi-pro Badminton.

Re: Shakur Stevenson v Oscar Valdez
Shakur Stevenson believes he is "under the skin" of fellow unbeaten super-featherweight Oscar Valdez and has vowed to "dominate" their unification fight on Saturday night.
WBO champion Stevenson (17-0) and WBC belt holder Valdez (30-0) put their respective world titles on the line in Las Vegas, live on Sky Sports.
American star Stevenson claimed the WBO belt with a 10th-round stoppage of countryman Jamel Herring in October as he followed Valdez in becoming a two-weight world champion, with both fighters formerly holding the WBO featherweight title.
Live boxing on Sky Sports
Stevenson told Sky Sports he believes Valdez did not want to fight him at featherweight and feels the Mexican may regret taking the bout in a higher weight class, saying there is "definitely" a chance of him winning via knockout.
Stevenson said of the verbal battle: "I'm fully under his skin, I know for a fact. I can clearly tell I'm under his skin. This rivalry has been going a long time.
"I have been trying to fight him. I was his mandatory at 126lb but the fight didn't happen at that time. Maybe it's destiny but I believe he didn't want to fight at that time.
"He waited this long and I feel it was a bad idea for him to wait. They've got a more-experienced Shakur Stevenson, not the same one they would have got when I was 126lb.
"I'm going in and I'm going to dominate. Whatever game plan I have, I want to execute. That's what I'll do on Saturday night, I'm going in there to win every round.
"[Most definitely] there could be a knockout. A lot of people are saying the fight will go to unanimous decision, with me winning, but don't sleep on that. There's very much a possibility I could catch him with a good shot.
"I'm in a hell of a shape, I'm just so ready to fight now, ready to go in and do what I've been trying to do. This is the biggest fight of my career. I'm excited, I can't wait to perform."
Stevenson: I am relaxed like Floyd Mayweather
Stevenson says he has the Floyd Mayweather Jr "mindset" of staying calm in and around huge fights and has vowed to "shine" at the MGM Grand Garden Arena this weekend.
The New Jersey-born southpaw "respects" Valdez for taking on the fight and believes the duo's battle is "great for boxing".
Stevenson said: "I watch old Floyd [Mayweather] fights where he sells out arenas. If you pay attention to him, he is so relaxed.
"I feel like I've got that kind of mindset where I block everything out. I'm focused on fighting, making sure I'm relaxed. My mindset is that it's another day in the office.
On Valdez, who has 23 knockout victories on his CV, Stevenson added: "I understand and respect the fact he's taking a risk, he didn't have to take the challenge, a big challenge.
"You got to respect him outside the ring, the character to sign the contract, I respect every bit of it but inside I don't respect him. I've got no respect. I won't respect anything inside the ring.
"It's going to be a great fight and I feel I always step up to the plate in the biggest moments. On Saturday night, I'm going to step up to the plate. I'm going to shine."
Watch Shakur Stevenson vs Oscar Valdez live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Arena from 2am on Sunday morning.

Re: Shakur Stevenson v Oscar Valdez
Stevenson: 'I look forward to beating Valdez - and Canelo!'
Shakur Stevenson called Oscar Valdez's bluff as he braced himself for a war when the two meet in their unification fight in Las Vegas on Saturday night.
The pair both enter the fight defending undefeated records alongside their world titles, Valdez having won 23 of his 30 fights by stoppage and Stevenson 17-0 after nine knockouts and eight victories by decision.
Valdez, seven years older than Stevenson, insisted he was ready for any style of fight, including going 12 rounds for the first time in his career.
"With a fight with Shakur you never know. We can bang if we have to bang, we can box if we have to box, it all depends what Shakur brings," he said at Thursday's press conference.
Stevenson was quick to respond, suggesting his opponent was trying to play mind games.
"I think that's BS, I think he's coming to bang," he said. "I think he's trying to trick me into thinking he's about to try box me and be technical.
"I'm not falling for that.
"I'm ready for the Oscar Valdez who will go in there throwing all them hooks and putting pressure."
On the weekend of the 2022 NFL Draft in Las Vegas, Raiders linebacker Denzel Perryman was called upon to produce the coin toss that would decide on Stevenson walking out second but being introduced first at MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Both insisted they were in the best shape of their life, both set their sights on the pound-for-pound list.
Part of Valdez's camp has notably involved the man at the tip of the pound-for-pound list in fellow countryman Canelo Álvarez - a fact on which Stevenson was happy to pounce.
"When Bud (Terence Crawford) was in my camp Bud came in and we sparred each other, but I feel like it's different with his camp because he had Canelo with him every step of the way," said the 24-year-old.
"Canelo was right there next to him telling him how to hook, jab and they were with each other every step of the way so when I beat him I'm going to feel good beating him, Canelo and Eddie Reynoso (Canelo's trainer)."
Valdez had previously been accused of 'ducking' a fight with Stevenson, who himself admitted it was time to move on from those claims.
With belts now to show for their work, the time is right.
"It was perfect timing," said Valdez. "Shakur Stevenson is a two-time world champion, I'm a two-time world champion, it's a perfect time now. Let's prove who is the best at 130lbs."

Agree- Valdez is a step up and provides real risk. I always feel like you can tell the real ones by how aggressively they are matched up at esrly points in their careers- I just have this feeling that Shakur is the real deal and will go far. Hats off to Top Rank and both guys for making this fight happen right now.
I am always a little hesitant to proclaim a young guy as the next big/sure thing, but I just feel like Stevenson has all the physical gifts plus the intangibles. Valdez will push him and make him a better fighter- as long as he passes the test. For every Oscar, Floyd, Roy…etc., there is a Howard Davis, Francisco Bojado, and Ricardo Williams. I’m excited for this fight and like both guys.

You're right on that. I admit to being a serious doubter of the fire in the belly and maturity of Stevenson. Athleticism, boxing skill and potential..all boxes checked. But up until last fight he seemed to be lacking the willingness to downshift and really open up all those advantages. That changed with Herring. Whipped him out clean. His snoozer track meet with Nakathila prior looks a bit different now..hindsight being 20/20 and the complete thrashing Nakathila just gave Berchelt. Styles making fights and all. But Valdez is going to have a rough time getting where he needs to be and staying there, up close and hooking short before Stevenson shows the footwork and reset he has. And cannot see any scenario where Valdez can keep it a boxing match even though the power jab of Valdez may give Stevenson some pause early. Hope they mesh somewhere in the middle and no doubt both will be top form and a tough competitive fight comes off!

Re: Shakur Stevenson v Oscar Valdez
Whoever wins deserves to be on P4P lists.
-
Re: Shakur Stevenson v Oscar Valdez
Start being postponed by half an hour now for Dana White. Nico Ali Walsh will not be happy about this.
-
Re: Shakur Stevenson v Oscar Valdez
KO 1 for young Ali Walsh. Crowd and announce seem absolutely shocked. "Legend has returned" ffs :vd:. Nice ko but if this kid isn't silver spoon stroked I don't know who is.
-
Re: Shakur Stevenson v Oscar Valdez
Ali Walsh wins first round ko with one two. He is certainly milking the Muhammad Ali grandson link. Hope he is worth it.
-
Re: Shakur Stevenson v Oscar Valdez
Katie looking stiff needs to get busy. Missed first two round. Extra point Serrano for those old school tube socks! Great great fight atmosphere they are going ALL in this one. Sit back and enjoy
-
Re: Shakur Stevenson v Oscar Valdez
Wow. Serrano is absolutely cleaning her up with volume. Katie legs are so stiff and wooden. Huge round Serrano 5th (?!)
-
Re: Shakur Stevenson v Oscar Valdez
They MUST get with the times and make these full 3 minute rounds! Taylor clawing back end of 6th but still Serrano with the volume and accuracy. She is doing the moving.

;D:p Yeh you're right. Damn multi cards you were talking about!
Keyshawn Davis had to work for that 6 round tko just now. He puts well schooled combos together with ease. Def one to watch close
-
Re: Shakur Stevenson v Oscar Valdez
Surprised Canelo is at this fight. He is fighting next week.
-
Re: Shakur Stevenson v Oscar Valdez
Slow and cautious first round which will suit Stevenson. Valdez must get in close and let his hands go.
1 nil Stevenson
-
Re: Shakur Stevenson v Oscar Valdez
Valdez trying to work body and some head shots but far too slow in the 2nd.
2 nil
-
Re: Shakur Stevenson v Oscar Valdez
Valdez has his work cut out here. Looks like two different weight classes in there too.
-
Re: Shakur Stevenson v Oscar Valdez
Stevenson controlling the distance beautifully and looks in control of the fight.
Valdez looks lost in there.
3 nil
-
Re: Shakur Stevenson v Oscar Valdez
Valdez got to throw punches in bunches and go Rambo on Stevenson.

Re: Shakur Stevenson v Oscar Valdez
Stevenson making it look like very easy work.
Stevenson knocks down Valdez in the 6th. Quality boxer.
-
Re: Shakur Stevenson v Oscar Valdez
Stevenson dominating the centre of the ring and pushing Valdez back now in round 7.
-
Re: Shakur Stevenson v Oscar Valdez
Deep deep hole for Valdez. Shooting short straight right very well but Stevenson owns all of that ring real-estate, front and back. Sharp and calculating very well. Oscar needs something explosive and final here because those cards are moot.
-
Re: Shakur Stevenson v Oscar Valdez
Valdez has shown no head movement and fought in straight lines. Totally outclassed by Stevenson who looks too big and good for him.
8 nil

Stevenson really is quality. Hit and not get hit.
The two female bricklayers earlier on can't really compare, can they. Sound and fury but not quality.

Re: Shakur Stevenson v Oscar Valdez
Man..he had Oscar flinching after the lead. Terrible sign
-
Re: Shakur Stevenson v Oscar Valdez
Valdez gets a sympathy 10th round from me for trying to make a fight of it.

Same applies for us knuckle draggers ;D too in fairness. Fans pick their attraction. Alycia Baumgardner is top quality hit and not get hit style but not exactly blowing up media.

Re: Shakur Stevenson v Oscar Valdez
Shakur Stevenson was celebrating before his fight with Oscar Valdez was even over, couldn’t fit all his belts on and teased a future bout with Devin Haney
In boxing, fighters often save their celebrations until after they hear the judges’ scorecards and can be certain of victory such is the history of suspect scoring in the sport.
For Shakur Stevenson, however, he put in such a dominant performance over Oscar Valdez that he was celebrating before the final bell had even rung.
Valdez was dominant throughout, establishing his jab early on and winning almost every round, along with a knockdown in round six.
In the final moments of the fight, Stevenson let the crowd know how confident he was of victory by running around the ring celebrating rather than engaging with Valdez.
Stevenson was certainly was proven right when the judges’ scorecards were announced, as it was a wide unanimous decision, with scores of 117-110, 118-109, 118-109.
Shortly after the result was announced, Stevenson was presented with his belts while giving a post-fight interview, but he had so many titles he could barely carry them all at once.
Prior to this latest bout, in terms of major titles, Stevenson had won the WBO featherweight and super featherweight titles.
Now, he has added the WBC super featherweight title and Ring Magazine belt to his collection.
In terms of what’s next for Stevenson, he spoke about becoming undisputed champion at super featherweight, which would mean taking on the WBA champion, Roger Gutierrez and the IBF title holder, Kenichi Ogawa.
Stevenson was also asked about a potential clash with Devin Haney, who is aiming to become the undisputed lightweight champion when he fights George Kambosos Jr on June 5th.
“My goal is to collect all the belts at 130lbs and become undisputed champion.” Stevenson said, “I deserve to be a superstar, so this is what I’ve got to do.”
“Devin is definitely a huge fight for me. Devin is a hell of a fighter and I’ve got nothing but respect and love for him, but we could line that up in the future too.”
