Now that he's President-elect, he continues to push for unity. Once he's sworn in... he'll continue to do so.
But.....
Unity in today's America is a pipe dream. Ain't gonna happen.
The most ardent of Trump followers, in a manner that would make Trump proud, would rather see the country go down in flames than "give in" to Biden's calls for unity.
So frankly... unity ain't gonna work.
So what's Plan B?
What do you do when all of the well-intentioned arguments in the world fall on deaf ears? What do you do when your defeated opponents seem bent on making the whole thing come crashing down around your ears?
Seriously... and this is beyond any Trump (pro or con) arguments. At this point, some of us don't give a shit about Trump and just want him gone.
But what's Plan B?
Is Biden going to be reduced to meekly begging the far right for unity? Which is basically NEVER going to happen? And is umpteen times further away today than at any other time in history?
Does Biden at some point take off the silk gloves and put on the boxing ones instead?
I mean... this fucking tug-of-war has to end at some point, right? If not... get ready for an America weakened from within to the point that the Russias and Chinas of the world are going to be plotting some permanent headways.
At what point does the begging stop and the hardline actions begin?
Are we gonna keep harping about the past? Seems like it's all we do nowadays. "Oh... so-and-so did it and got away with it... so now I'm gonna do the same damn thing." All that's missing is the "nyah-nyah-nyah".
Is nobody else tired of this shit?
FFS man! If I'm the GOP... I get my shit together and start looking for the next viable candidate to take the government back (or at least part of it) at the next available opportunity.
That IS... of course... if elections are still a thing in the States. I mean, who knows... given the sudden mistrust even on democratic elections... is nothing out of bounds? Is everything game and up for grabs?
Someone let us know if it is... because the words "this is not who we are" stopped meaning ANYTHING a long time ago.
Going to be a long long haul. I think much of it comes down to the Republican party which is in a position of now needing to chew it's own legs off at the knees to free itself of the mescaline induced perma fracture that is Trump and the culty Q grasp. It's actually a shame, I as an Independent very much want a strong Republican party. But we're beyond two party parties now at least temporarily. All of this was never about legislative achievements or advancing a conservative agenda. Trump nurtured a culture of distrust and delusional dogma as a lowest common denominator but I really do believe a part of those supporters are
not too far gone to come back. Some though are just that, done. Gone pecans. Lost causes who will continue the hero worship for that mindset over belief in this Country and it's principles. I think we'll see more middle ground with the old guard Rs and the new Administration..in spots..than we may think. A good start may be factual, reasoned differences in political opinion has to stop resulting in immediate knee jerk walled off indictments. You don't have to agree with someone to act like an adult and shake a damn hand.
Brilliant.
It is not so different here, as hard as that may be to imagine. Johnsons cult of personality allowed him to illegally close parliament and ignore the seriousness of the pandemic.Today we have the worst infectionand death figures (per 100 000)in the world. That lies at Johnsons feet.
The vaccine rollout is very good though, so credit where it is due.
I would like a tory (Conservative) party with more of the principled politicians I grew up with, even though I would never vote for them. A two party system is never perfect but they should at least knock the extreme edges off each other and share ideas which have merit above politics.
Good luck in the US, you are going to need it.
