Oleksandr Usyk v Joe Joyce
Oleksandr Usyk could be ordered to fight Joe Joyce while Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury takes place, according to Frank Warren.
The Hall of Fame promoter, who represents Joyce and co-promotes Fury, has revealed that preliminary talks have already taken place for Usyk vs Joyce.
Ukraine’s undisputed cruiserweight king moved up to heavyweight in 2019 and took up his option as WBO ‘super’ champion to become the mandatory challenger.
He waited his turn while AJ fought Andy Ruiz Jr and Kubrat Pulev, and is now due for his shot.
However, Joshua wants to unify against Fury and the WBO seemingly do not intend to deprive fans from seeing a rare ‘undisputed’ fight with all four belts at stake.
Warren told iFL TV: “We’re working on, at the moment, Usyk and Joe Joyce.
“I think the WBO will order that as an ‘interim’ title fight so we’re working hard to make that happen…
“The situation is that the WBO have said they’d like to do that fight as an eliminator.
“We have no objection to that and I don’t think Usyk has.
“There’s been some preliminary talks and we’ll see where we go from there. I hope [it will happen]. It’s a good fight.
“And I think whoever wins it – based on his last performance, Joe’s looking really good.
“If he comes through it, it puts the winner in a tremendous position.
“The eventual winner of the two fights between Tyson and AJ will have to defend against Joyce or Usyk, or vacate the belt.”
Regarding how he believes the fight would play out, Warren concluded: “I like Usyk, he was a tremendous cruiserweight.
“The two [heavyweight] fights I’ve seen, Chazz Witherspoon and Derek [Chisora].
“Joe is a naturally big man, Usyk has come up as a cruiserweight, he’s 34.
“It’s quite unusual for guys to do it at that age. He’s not a natural heavyweight. He can probably still make cruiserweight.
“To beat a big guy like Joe he’s gonna have to really turn it on in my opinion. You’ve got to fancy Joe to be the favourite in that fight.”

Re: Oleksandr Usyk v Joe Joyce
That would be a good, interesting matchup.
Usyk is quality, but he really is a cruiserweight and will always have that disadvantage against the super heavy giant. I doubt he will dope as much as Evan Fields did! Elite level skills, great engine, and cumulative power rather than a one hit KO artist. Good chin, as far as we can tell.
Joyce is good too, though possibly not as skilled as Usyk. Long amateur career, though, so he has the fundamentals and good technique. Moves well for such a tall guy, and uses his height well. Again, good chin and not a huge puncher.
Interesting fight for those of us that admire boxing IQ and skills. It has ‘points win’ written all over it, and it would be fascinating to see who nicks it

Re: Oleksandr Usyk v Joe Joyce
Joyce really impressed with that telephone pole power jab, he couldn't miss and it's a beast! Both are well deep in ama experience and familiarity. Usky will not be a stationary target at all and Joyce isn't exactly will o' the wisp defense wise. Usyk in danger from opening bell to the final but think he takes a unam dec.
-
Re: Oleksandr Usyk v Joe Joyce
That's cool. I prefer Usyk's choice of Wilder. He beats Wilder, we have no need to consider him ever again outside his only means to win: a puncher's chance.

I agree with all of that. Usyk isn't Dubois, he won't stand still.

Re: Oleksandr Usyk v Joe Joyce
Usyk beat Joyce over 4 rounds but I think Joe will win over 12 rounds. Joe has improved, will do better over the longer distance and I think Usyk is not as good with his injuries he has had and struggled too much against Chisora.

I would hope Joyce has improved, he was an amateur. Every time a Brit is underdog for a title, you back them because “they’ve improved.”
Don’t fighters from anywhere else improve?

What is your problem with Brits? Not being funny but you seem to have a bit of a bee in your bonnet when Brits celebrate or back fighters from here that many of us have followed for years. That is not blind optimism it is quite a natural and healthy response but you seem oddly irked by it.
If I am wrong then my apologies but that is how it comes across.

I pictured @Primo Carnera working at his barbershop, hears a patron talking about the upcoming fight "I think Joe will win over 12 rounds."
Patron in the chair asks "Why?"
Patron in line replies, "Joe has improved"

First of all , I accept your apology. I have no problem with Brits whatsoever, not even you! ;)
My problem isn’t with backing your fighter, regardless of whether if it is blind optimism or not.
But to try prove that it is not blind optimism by giving reasons like “he’s improved” is pathetic.
What happened to balance? Because you’re a Brit, you wouldn’t see it because it comes across as arrogant and disrespectful to the opposition fighter.
If the tables were turned you would see it mate, honestly.
If @Master were to have said :
“Joyce has improved a lot and he has a big size advantage , hopefully that will be enough. But Usyk needs to be respected for what he has achieved and it won’t be a pushover.”
I would have no problem whatsoever.

What a daft thing to say. You are seriously suggesting that being British means it is impossible to have any objectivity? You don't half assume a hell of a lot about people. It is quite funny seeing you trying to justify your own bias by imposing it on others. Usyk did not look great against Chisora. That makes any heavyweight matchup with him nowhere near the foregone conclusion people were assuming. I am not sure that Joyce is going to expose or even beat him but I don't think Master was suggesting that Usyk had not improved at all, rather that he might struggle against a younger fitter and more dangerous opponent than Del boy.

Beaner doing what Beaner does. Pick a couple of words out of a statement , change the total context to suit his argument/ opinion. So what is “my own bias”? Who am I biased towards?
Who said it was a foregone conclusion?
Most people would say Usyk is a better boxer, most people would say Usyk starts as favourite.
Of course , there are questions that need answering, the main one being can he impose himself against these much bigger guys?
As for what YOU THINK what Master was suggesting, well his words were that “ I think Joe will win over 12 rounds. Joe has improved, will do better over the longer distance .”
So I replied asking whether Usyk had improved. Also Usyk is also a fit guy who has no question marks over his ability to do the distance.
And you adding that he’s :
Younger - clutching at straws, seeing as he is 35 years old.
Fitter - fitter than Del Boy possibly, but hardly an area where he scores big against Usyk.
More dangerous - debatable. I mean, do you see Joyce getting as close to beating a Dillian Whyte that was at the time seen as a top 4 HW along with AJ, Fury & Wilder ?
I never said Joyce doesn’t stand a chance. After how he dispatched of Dubois, that would be disrespectful. But we must remember, Usyk is not Dubois. A very different proposition .
I aimed my remarks at Master’s rose tinted spectacles , yet your first sentence is an aggressive “what have you got against Brits?”
Someone is feeling a bit paranoid me thinks.

I am backing Joe. He has a great strong jab and lots of experience and a really good chin. I think he will be too big over the course of the fight for the smaller Usyk.

Re: Oleksandr Usyk v Joe Joyce
Repeating what’s already been said but Usyk by UD the safe bet all the way.
While Joyce is in there he has a chance of tagging him but Usyk boxing IQ on another level and you just can’t see it.
It’s a shame for Usyk with his skill levels that he’s just not a natural heavyweight so he can mix it with the big boys. Not the first former cruiser to fall in that category.
Against the big guys winning by UD at distance is what he will need to do. He’s not going to be able to go in for the kill and engage.
-
Re: Oleksandr Usyk v Joe Joyce
If Joyce continues to improve the jab and sorts out his right hand, so it's there to block the Usyk left, he's got a great shot at winning this.
As Mark said though, Usyk points is probably the safe bet. People will point to the WSB and you can basically come to any conclusion you want. Usyk won that, he'll win over twelve. Joyce has got better since then, etc etc...
Thinking back to the WSB fight I was of the opinion that Usyk won it at a canter. I re-watched the other day and it wasn't quite that one sided, despite Richie Woodhall's salivating over everything and anything Usyk did. Joyce had decent success and won rounds for me.

Joyce by late stoppage, think hell start really pressuring mid rounds and usyk will wilt

Re: Oleksandr Usyk v Joe Joyce
Anthony Joshua or Tyson Fury – but first Oleksandr Usyk: Joe Joyce lays out his big heavyweight plans
Joe Joyce’s time is now. The British heavyweight is two fights away from being an undefeated and undisputed world champion.
In a year where the boxing gods may finally deliver the Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury super fight everyone has been waiting for, it is another British heavyweight who has his sights set on establishing himself as the best in the world.
At 35, the silver medallist from Rio is four years younger than Joshua, despite his own Olympic exploits coming four years later.
So where Joshua was able to ease his way up to the top of the heavyweight ranks, Joyce has not had the same luxury of time.
He was already in his 30s when he turned pro in 2017, but last November’s win over Daniel Dubois put him into another stratosphere.
Now Joyce is set to take on Oleksandr Usyk, the Ukrainian who has dominated the cruiserweight division before stepping up to heavyweight.
If he can become the first person to beat the 34-year-old, then Joyce becomes the obvious candidate to take on whoever emerges from Joshua-Fury double-header.
That is a big if but it is not going to stop Joyce from dreaming big.
He said: “I don’t have the time to sit and wait around. This is my time now, I’m in my prime and I’m ready to win a world title. 2021, have some fun!
“Undefeated, undisputed, are you mad!”
It was the win over Dubois, using his jab to hammer away at the eye of his more fancied opponent, that has catapulted Joyce into the next level of the boxing ranks.
After that win in November, Joyce disappeared to Dubai for a week’s holiday, skipping the media spotlight.
The way he has gone under the radar to this point would not be possible were he to line up an all-British super fight by knocking off Usyk.
But Joyce is ready for the change of dimension.
“I don’t mind taking photographs. I’ve never been mobbed, mobbed. For Fury Wilder I, I got kind of mobbed there,” said Joyce, who is working with Purplebricks to encourage the nation to get behind Team GB on their journey to Tokyo.
“There was loads of British support and guys crying out ‘Hey, Joe Joyce’. It was great out there in the sun, there were people climbing over barriers.
“I can’t wait for that and for there to be crowds again, that’s the whole thing with boxing, building up to the main event. I can’t wait for it to go back to that.
“That was my big fight, the fight with Dubois. It was my first fight at the O2, which was going to be sell-out, pay-per-view, and then… Covid. But I’m so glad that it’s happened, I’ve won and proved a lot of people wrong and it’s really set me up at the right time for some big fights.”
Since returning from Dubai, Joyce has been back in training and building up for the fight against Usyk. That looks set to take place in London, a second meeting between the two fighters after previously squaring off in the World Series of Boxing when they were both amateurs.
Usyk won that day, but had a huge advantage in terms of experience. This time around, Joyce is adamant he will be ready.
He said: “With Dubois, his thing is the power, I had to watch out for his power. And with Usyk it’s going to be more of a mental battle, because he’s very skilful and he’s a southpaw. He’s got good footwork, so it’s going to be completely different. I’m not going to be worried about being knocked out, but outpointed or if Usyk tries to steal it from me, that’s what I’ll have to watch out for.”

Re: Oleksandr Usyk v Joe Joyce
Oleksandr Usyk is unbeaten but, as an amateur, lost to Shawn Porter who is now six weight classes below him! This is how…
"He wasn't a skinny bean when we fought. But he wasn't as thick as he is now" - Shawn Porter remembers how he beat Oleksandr Usyk who is now six weight divisions above him
Shawn Porter has recalled how he hit Oleksandr Usyk with a right hand to win an amateur bout which, 15 years later, feels improbable.
Former welterweight champion Porter is currently six weight classes below undefeated heavyweight Usyk but beat him when they shared a ring.
"In 2006 he fought at 165lbs (11st 13lbs)," Porter told Sky Sports.
"He fought in the 2012 Olympic Games at heavyweight [equivalent to cruiserweight in professional boxing].
"My dad said: 'You recognise this name? Remember fighting this kid?'
"I said no.
"He said: 'He's the Ukrainian that you beat in Chicago'.
"I said: 'What! He's fighting at heavyweight now?'
"Usyk was as tall as he is now, back when we fought. He is definitely bigger, heavier, stronger now.
"He wasn't a skinny bean when we fought. But he wasn't as thick as he is now."
Porter and Usyk were both 20 years old when they clashed in December 2006.
Usyk would go on to capture an Olympic gold medal in 2012 and is now unbeaten as a former undisputed cruiserweight champion and is a threat to the heavyweight titles.
But Porter, who now stands eight inches shorter and whose reach is nine inches shorter, managed to get the better of him.
He remembered on his podcast The Porter Way: "Amazing fight. Myself, Keith Thurman and 11 guys on the US team. Ukraine came over.
"Keith was 152lbs, I was 165lbs.
"Everybody comes back to the locker room losing!
"Me and Keith were in the locker room warming up. We looked at each other: 'We ain't going home with a loss'.
"I went out there against Usyk - he was tall, southpaw.
"We fought on the points system. Three out of five judges had to push a button within one second in order for you to get a point.
"First round, I was winning by two points. The second round was tied. Going into the third round my coach said: 'Line this dude up for a right hand and you will get him!'
"The final round; less than a minute in I caught him with a right hand. He didn't stumble back but he took a couple of steps back, enough for me to know that he was hurt.
"I jumped on him, kept boxing, and won the fight by four points.
"It was a close fight until the end. I thought to myself: 'I earned that - not just because he came over to the US.'"
Usyk stuck around in the amateurs until his Olympic success in 2012 but Porter turned pro in 2008, and is a two-time world welterweight champion.

I concur. He is bigger & stronger. Not neccesarily smarter though. Darn sure not faster. I'm going with ring IQ and fluidity in favor of the guy with the I'm crazy look.
