Fighters who dined out on a loss
Who you got. Fighters who's career was defined by a loss.
-
Re: Fighters who dined out on a loss
Jorge Luis Gonzales losing to Bowe.
Mason losing to Lennox Lewis.
Hearns losing to Leonard (and then Hagler)
-
Re: Fighters who dined out on a loss
Mason's career was definitely defined by the Lewis loss. Not sure about dining out on it thought, he almost went blind didn't he? ;D
Think more Henry Cooper. No one cares that he won the Lonsdale belt a hundred times. He knocked down Clay God dammit and gave a great account of himself in a plucky loss.
-
Re: Fighters who dined out on a loss
I had just typed out an essay and then deleted it, Henry cooper is exactly the kind of guy who I couldn’t think of. Plenty of greats lost lots, but they are almost never defined or served by those fights. “Dined out on” implies that the guy was better off for losing the fight, in the scheme of things.
-
Re: Fighters who dined out on a loss
Nice twist on it topic. Maybe a guy like Razor Ruddock post Tyson I. But that Dokes KO still stands out.
-
Re: Fighters who dined out on a loss
Jeff Lacey.
Must hurt..no one seems to remember anything before or after the JC fight.
-
Re: Fighters who dined out on a loss
Felix Sturm - won about 50 "world" title fights yet always remembered as the guy who got shafted by Oscar (and then ironically accused of constantly shafting every visitor to Germany).
-
Re: Fighters who dined out on a loss
Buster Douglas dined out on his loss to Holyfield to the extent that he nearly died of overeating.
-
Re: Fighters who dined out on a loss
Michael Spinks.
I remember Larry Holmes was asked about his thoughts on the outcome of the Tyson - Spinks result ,(and you have to take into account a lot of the ring magazine staff said Spinks on points )
Larry said the following - " The Spinks Jinx there Aint Nothing to it , and the whole world knows he wont do it , he will run around the ring for a few rounds , but Mike Tyson will run him down ! "
-

Lacy definitely isn't dining out on that loss.
-
Re: Fighters who dined out on a loss
@Memphis you've fucked it mate. Is it dined out on or defined by? People have enough problems understanding thread topics without you adding to it.
-
Re: Fighters who dined out on a loss
Mitch Green?
Went the distance with Tyson.
Except on the street, where he didn't go the distance with Tyson.
-
Re: Fighters who dined out on a loss
I blame Master. I assumed people would know exactly what I meant but he took it immediately down the wrong path.
It's probably too late now but to clarify ;D
Fighters who's careers were defined by a loss, but they got their monies worth out of that loss.
What about Maidana? Lost twice to Floyd back to back but laughed all the way to the bank on both occasions.

Trust Master. Its comforting that things haven't changed around here...;D
-
Re: Fighters who dined out on a loss
How's about Wayne McCulloch? Specifically being the first to take Naz 12 rounds.
He had some decent wins so to say he was defined by that is a bit unfair but he is most remembered nowadays for having the best chin outside of Oliver McCall, a reputation he first earned from that loss.

That may be how Maidana comes to be remembered, and he sure can dine out on those, but for me he can't be defined by them as the public service he did by beating Broner looms large in my memories.

Re: Fighters who dined out on a loss
You are all cunts.
Broner is making a career out of his losses.
Hagler made a lot of people like him when he retired to Italy after his loss to Leonard and the bad scoring of one judge.
Similarly Wlad has got a lot more supporters and enhaced his legacy by getting knocked out by AJ.
Rocky Fielding seems to have got some support here as the next big thing after his performance against Canelo.
Am I going down the right lines here?
-
Re: Fighters who dined out on a loss
Meldrick Taylor crusher to Chavez? Never the same and always over shadows his prior masterpiece v McGirt.
-
Re: Fighters who dined out on a loss
As far as I understand the question, both Jeff Lacy and Meldrick Taylor have been said which I agree that both are definitely remembered for their specific loss than anything else they did in their careers.
To a lesser extent, I would say Hamed with Barrera. Although people do talk about Hamed’s career prior to his loss, he almost became defined by that loss in the sense that it proved what level a fighter he really was.

You silly cunt! ;D;D Hagler, Hearns, Wlad ain’t dining out on their losses, they’re fucking legends. Broner whether we like him or not is a 3 weight (or is it 4??) World Champion.
We’re talking about people like Martin Murray and Paul Smith, who were the “shoulda, woulda, coulda” brigade. Gallant losers , but never won fuck all. Chisora dines out on all his fucking losses and Dave “boy” Green for his KO by SRL.

No you are wrong, it is not about that at all. Memphis tell him I am right and he is wrong.

I told you Memphis, totally fucked.

Rocky Fielding will forever be the best title challenger who ever lived. If any contemporary talent receives an opportunity to prove themselves at an elite level, they might just say “I’m gunna go rocky fielding on this bitch”

Good one, p4p. ;D ;D
Fielding was actually the sacrificial lamb defending champion, not the challenger..... but the rest of the post is well taken. How many stitches to sew up your torn cheek? ;D ;D
-
Re: Fighters who dined out on a loss
My cheeks are as safe as Canelo is from a fielding rematch.
-
Re: Fighters who dined out on a loss
Fielding was to Team Canelo what an underhand toss of a softball would look like to Barry Bonds.

You're right on, bizzare replies to a simple question :S
Chisora is the one that obviously comes to mind, his loss to vitali especially(I don't count helenius as that was robbery, even though that loss got him the title fight which provided some dinners), he fought vitali who tore his shoulder rotator cuff in the left arm early on and then went on to take a bit of a pounding from a one armed man.. And since then chisora has been dining out on various losses.. And probably still will for a few years yet
-
Re: Fighters who dined out on a loss
If we're talking defined by, Billy Conn? Maybe unfairly. Thought of John Mugabi earlier. Sturm was a great call. Edison Miranda.
-
Re: Fighters who dined out on a loss
Anyone mention Zab yet?
Guy was all Bambi in there, but had Nady as an excuse to fall back on.
McGregor?
Am I even on the right track with this topic?

How do you actually embed a gif into a post? I'm having a nightmare here.

I did that but it was just a still image, not a moving Gif. Also it had the image in the post and also an attached thumbnail.

Got it. It works.
I now cannot do the joke though as I've rather telegraphed it ;D

Re: Fighters who dined out on a loss
I'm definitely sticking with Zab. The guy lost to Baldomir and went straight into the Floyd fight.
