great boxing movies
I figure this has been brought up a number of times so I put it in this thread to avoid annoying anyone. I always liked the movie about Hurricane Carter. He was before my time and I haven't researched him and I was wondering if people here were familiar with him and how good he was. Same question about James Braddock who Rusell Crowe played. I know I could just look it up but I figure it will makefor good conversation plus I am bored

Re: great boxing movies
What was the name of that documentary about Foreman and Ali in Zaire. I think it was "when we were kings" I found that absolutely fantastic, just seeing foreman training on the bags was amazing

Re: great boxing movies
Theres a few different views about Rubin Carter its worth researching online.
A decent fighter in tough area with formidable stable mates.
This man Ron Lipton - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Used to post on one Old school forum that went private 'Cyber' and also has utube vids up as he trains fighters still in the old way.
If you can engage him in conversation about Rubin it will bring you back into focus (about whats been portrayed in the media and through Bob Dylans song etc, and it leaves you somewhat questioning.
So do the statements of the witnesses that were there that night and the police report on cars in the area etc, its not a cut and dried set up. :-\

Re: great boxing movies
Requiem for a Heavyweight is one of my favorites for sure. Great acting by Quinn and Gleason. Great White Hope about the same time...James earl jones did Jack Johnson as almost sinister, cocky and as brash as they come. Good small glimpse into the time. Oh and 'Gladiator in the 90s..classic cheese ;D There was one called 'The power of one' (?) with Morgan Freeman set in south Africa that was very solid.

Re: great boxing movies
Ali played by Will Smith was pretty good. Raging Bull ofcourse. Mark Walberg as Mickey Ward was good too.
Bad to the Bones was a good/funny boxing movie and the Great White Hype.

Re: great boxing movies
I like the old movies, like "The Champ" with Kirk Douglas. Especially "The Harder They Fall" with Humphrey Bogart.

Re: great boxing movies
I liked Will Smith as Ali.
The Hurricane was an excellent movie. IMO it was better than Raging Bull. There is just something about Raging Bull I don't see or get, but I have heard so many express love for this film that I now just figure that it's my failure to appreciate it's greatness. Should give a re-watch.
I liked Million Dollar Baby, but I know that film also gets some flack from hardcore fans. I liked it anyway.
The best I've seen in the past many years however is The Fighter. Could watch that one over and over. The sub plot of the families' issues is both hard to watch and captivating.
