Great memories of Kirkland.
RIP
R.I.P champ
He was a one off. Flawed, but at times brilliant. Eccentric in the most British of ways, getting caught by sometimes not very great fighters, and then pulling a performance like he did against Duran seemingly out of nowhere. He was a rare gem in a sport already chuck full of rough diamonds.
RIP Kirkland Laing
Bunce did a very good interview with Laing on BBC years ago. Think he was living a simple life and did not like the fame.
Claim to fame was beating Roberto Duran and then not capitalise on that huge victory. He also had huge domestic fights with Colin Jones losing twice to him and being knocked out.
I remember Kirkland Laing fight on BBC making a number of comeback fights to win British and European titles. That was exciting watching him with his hands down and using his reflexes. He had a bomb of a right hand.
RIP Gifted one.
I hadn’t seen this. A great Shame. Very gifted.
It's an awful shame how his life went. If he'd been able to stay away from the substances and turned up for training once in a while he'd have been something special. Worth watching the Duran fight if you haven't seen it.
