"Collazo Stops Jerusalem After 7th Round, Becomes WBO 105-Pound Champ In 7th Fight"
"Oscar Collazo was more than ready Saturday night for a world champion despite his lack of professional experience.
The powerful, skillful southpaw battered Melvin Jerusalem over the final four rounds of their fight and stopped him after a one-sided seventh round at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California. After absorbing a lot of body shots, Jerusalem told referee Ray Corona that he didn’t want to continue after the seventh round of their WBO minimumweight championship match on the Alexis Rocha-Anthony Young undercard.
Collazo became a world champion in just his seventh professional fight, which made him the fastest fighter from Puerto Rico to win a recognized crown. The 26-year-old Collazo also improved to 7-0 (5 KOs).
The Philippines’ Jerusalem (20-3, 12 KOs) lost the WBO 105-pound championship he won in his previous fight. Jerusalem knocked out favored Japanese southpaw Masataka Taniguchi (16-4, 11 KOs) in the second round to win the WBO minimumweight championship January 6 in Osaka, Japan.
Jerusalem came out strong in the first three rounds, but Collazo took control thereafter.
Collazo clipped Jerusalem with a right hook with just under 50 seconds on the clock in the seventh round. He tried to finish his fatigued, hurt opponent, but Jerusalem made it to the end of the round.
The ex-champion had taken too much punishment, though, and declined to continue.
