Paying for opposition research is something both political parties do. In this case people from both parties paid for this stuff. That's not the same as colluding with the government of a hostile power to alter the result of an election. The CIA said the same thing which is why the Obama administration went on the telly and said that according to the best information we have the riots were started by the video.

The Steele dossier has gained a lot of credibility over the last year. Lots of claims in the dossier have been proved correct by subsequent revelations. If the Democrats were going to smear Trump with the information in this dossier why didn't they release it before the election? Nobody knew about it till January. So there was a glitch in the Pennsylvania computer system that allowed noncitizens to vote. A system that tried to get citizens to register also mistakenly tried to get noncitizens to register. Some did and the glitch allowed them to get a registration card. And 544 illegal votes were cast out of more than 93 million over an 18 year period. Maybe the number was higher than this! It's a argument for a mandatory comprehensive foolproof voter registration system I suppose but the GOP are dead against one of them for some reason. They just want to suppress minority votes.

That an active foreign policy advisor was taking these actions while in active communication with the campaign about those actions is quite damning.




During the 2016 campaign, Papadopoulos was in contact with a Russian professor whom he believed had close ties to the Kremlin. Papadopoulos told prosecutors that the man promised “dirt” on Hillary Clinton in the form of thousands of emails. In a significant detail, the offer took place in the midst of the hacking of Democratic National Committee emails — months before those efforts were made public.
Papadopoulos lied to investigators when he claimed that he thought the man was unconnected to the Russian government.
The professor introduced Papadopoulos to a woman claiming to be a relative of Vladimir Putin. Using his connections, Papadopoulos attempted to set up a meeting between the Trump campaign and Russian officials.
The newly revealed email element of Papadopoulos’s story is perhaps the clearest sign yet that at least some sectors of the Trump campaign sought to work directly with Russians to try to sway the U.S. election against Hillary Clinton.

The Russians didn't do anything with Hillary. Hillary paid a UK/US oppo research firm to look into the claims about Trump's relationships with the Kremlin and various other Russian actors. But she never actually used the dossier at all. Nobody knew about it till after the election.

Here's what America's eleven intelligence agencies found about Russian interference in the 2016 election Lyle:

Indictments normally come at the end of investigations. For this indictment to come now means Mueller is after the real story from Manafort.
