Nigel Benn took it up in his early 20's
He was 23 when he turned pro but he had been boxing amature before that.Originally Posted by LarryB

In the army. forgot who it was but I think it was 20 (amatuer) but that was probably when they had their first bout... now when they started.

I think Winky was about 16/17 years old.
Audley Harrison was mid twenties i think well can you call him a boxer??
Michael Grant picked up boxing in his 20's as well as Glenn Johnson, and also Ken Norton
Thats it... Norton, I was reading a book about Ali's opponents and it was in there but for some reason Floyd Patterson kept coming into my head![]()
I believe Marciano was in his mid 20's when he took up boxing.

Yes, yes, I changed your quote, but since when did the truth or facts matter on this forum?

Couple of names come to mind; Dennis Andries was 24 when he turned pro, after having little or no amateur background.
Larry Holmes was 21 years old before he walked into a boxing gym for the first time.
And although he lost a split decision in his WBO Featherweight title shot, John Davidson turned pro 7 days short of his 30th birthday. If my memory serves me right, he had no amateur pedigree, just a history in kickboxing.
Some of the Oriental world title holders, come into the sport relatively late off a kickboxing background as well.
