Well I think you shouldnt weight train him because he is wanting to box, correct? If that is what he really wants, you should just use the time you would be using on the weight training and instead let him have more work on the heavy bag or sprinting or some other activity.

At that age, lifting to heavy a weight can stunt bone growth. (so they say) Best not to take a chance.

Lifting @ a young age = stunted growth is a relatively well known weightlifting myth.

the problem with weightlifting @ a younger age is the maturity level of the trainee. Usually they're too anxious to stack on more weight, and disregard form and proper technique. This could lead to injury (especially for compound lifts such as bench press, squats and deadlifts) that can lead to stunting of development and growth.

As long as the young lifter gets into their head that proper form and technique takes precedence over all else, they're good to go

I never realised Id posted on this thread, my answer was flippent having read it sorry . Years ago I watched a very good 13 year old footballer training at a premier football club with the under 17 squad at the time I thought it strange. But never thought to much about it. Last week the clubs Physio turned up at my house with him. They had spent £25,000 on a hip op in the states on him to repare damage done by rushing him in his developement. Now guess whose got the job to rehab him
