Another week has come to an end babe.
It's almost in the bag.
You all know what that means? Boom!!! We up in this bitch once again & the Wack couldn't be any happier!!!
It's time to shake yah money makers because the crew & the drunken one shall be at it again.
For this installment of Wacko's Drunken Round by Round we have the distinct pleasure of seeing yet another volley of oldies but goodies...washed up...but not yet cleaned out...former champions fighting for one more shot at supremacy.
Madison Square Garden in beautiful New York will be host to what we all have our fingers, thumbs, bums, & toes crossed in hopes of a knock down drag out...another barn burner that our veterans have been treating us to over the course of the past month or so.
This Saturday...August the 5th, 2006; once superstars Vernon Forrest (37 wins with 28 ko's & 2 losses) & Ike Quartey (37 wins with 31 ko's, 2 losses, & 1 draw) step into the ring in a bid at climbing back into the fans hearts & jumping on to the Ring's rankings.
As everyone should know, both of these gents are former light & welterweight world champions that fell just short at just the wrong moments. Like the last super fight that we saw (I'm speaking of Vargas Mosley II...or if you wanna throw in Gatti Baldomir...if one can call that a super fight) it's all or nothing for these players. They've both moved up to the Junior Middleweight division at just the right time.
If Ike “Bazooka” Quartey can get through this with flying colors...Oscar De La Hoya, Mosley, Wright, & maybe...maybe a rematch with Vargas is out there to be taken. Quartey looked good against Verno Phillips & Bojorquez...but those are not really A list fighters. A shot against Forrest will be a good gauge at what Quartey is actually capable of.
Speaking of which, since his comeback...Vernon "The Viper" Forrest hasn't looked like the same animal that upset "Sugar" Shane Mosley, but he has been damned effective. He's knocked out both men that he fought...but again...the opposition is not A list here either.
The good thing is that Forrest seems to be fighting with his jab again instead of trying to act like the complete brawling moron that he tried to be against Mayorga, who TKO'd him in their first fight & then won a 12 round majority decision. After that Forrest went on a 2 year hiatus / injured list & then began his comeback.
It's late in the game for both of these fighters...& sadly...it pans out just like Vargas vs Mosley...who has more left in the tank. One man's gotta lose...that's the bad part about watching such entertaining fighters.
Both men are in their mid-30's, but Quartey has been the more active fighter over the last year. Forrest has yet to face a world class opponent since returning to the ring and would be facing his first step up since the second fight with Mayorga. This fight has been tagged as "Now or Never" & that couldn't be closer to the truth.
My whole thing is...can a Bazooka be accurate enough to take out a Viper?
I mean...a Bazooka blasts busts up a lot of ground...but it's the scatter factor that get's you...the bulk of the blast.
Vipers are often cautious...they don't throw everything at once...it's often accumulative. Very accurate...very stinging.
Problem is...this aint the fighters of old...but as proven of late...the old fighters can stir up new excitement...alot more than some of the prospects have done thus far.
That being said...the Wackster's Factors of the Fight.
Factors for & against Vernon "the Viper" Forrest
#1: Injuries. Forrest has been off a long time...side lined for injuries. You gotta think that that can play into this fight. Quartey's got a lot of heart & a hard fwockin head. Can Forrest's body hold up to the amount of banging that he's gonna be dishing out?
#2: The comeback. You gotta give it to Vernon...he's had a hell of a resurgence. He's knocked out both the men that he's had shots at...soft opposition or not...he got 'em.
#3: The Rust. It's there...how much is going to be the question.
#4: The opponent. Look at it two ways here. Ike is a come to kinda guy. Past being what it is...Forrest is a presser. He likes to be the aggressor & back a an up...Ike aint one to be backed up...to date. If Forrest can't apply appropriate pressure...plain & simple. He's fwocked. Another thing about Ike...he likes to do the very same thing. Counter punching aint Ike's strong suit...it's a big plus for Forrest as he is one hell of a counter puncher.
#5: The Jab. Forrest's jab is a thing of beauty. Anyone that saw him annihalate Mosley with it in their first fight knows that if he can get it going...Quartey will have hell all night long.
Factors for & against Ike "the Bazooka" Quartey
#1: Aggression. Can Forrest take another come to beating like the one that Mayorga dished out. Ike's much more accurate, much more patient, much more proffessional than anyone that Vernon has faced since the comeback & Mayorga. This will be a factor.
#2: The Reach & the Height. This is gonna be a tuffy for Ike. 2" reach advantage for Vernon plus a 2 1/2" height advantage. Might not sound like a lot...but it is...especially if Forrest can get the jab working. I know I sound like a broken record...but that's that.
#3: Ring Rust. Ike's got the advantage here...he's been more active.
#4: Chinny Chin Chiz-in!!! Big up for Ike. Ike's never been TKO'd. Ike's been down several times...but never out. Vernon has taken some knocks...been shaken & tasted the oh so sweet displeasure of counting light bulbs. Since the comeback...both men have knocked out or technically knocked out two men each...here comes the X-Factor to the fight. Can Forrest take it once he get's cracked?
#5: Opposition. Save Mosley...Quartey has fought the better opposition of the two.
Tuff call...but here's how I see it...Forrest by one hell of a long fought decision.
Then again...I like Forrest...he's good people & he does a lot for the little guy on the skreets & that's a rarity in boxing.
The undercard is a whole different animal.
Kassim "the Dream" Ouma (24 wins with 15 ko's, 2 losses, & 1 draw) is back once again in what will no doubt be a go for broke/power against power war of wills for braggin rights & no title against undefeated Brooklyn banger Sechew Powell (20 wins with 12 ko's) to start the night off right here.
Calling no Factors for this fight just for the reason that the only factor is...quite simply...power, excitement, & drive.
In Wacko's Humble Opinion...Powell has yet to face anyone in Ouma's league...outside of a worn down Frazier that took Powell 10 rounds & a questionable TerMeliksetian who also went the distance...who has he successfully dismantled?
Then again...lately...WTF is Ouma's league? Since the loss to Roman "Made in Hell" Karmazin...Ouma hasn't really impressed me all that greatly & two of the opponents were body bag material there to be knocked out & the other was Marco Antonio Rubio who hasn't fought the greatest of opposition & when he fought former Ouma opponant Kofi Jantuah he got dropped in either one or two rounds I think.
Don't get me wrong...I want Ouma to win...but he seems often lethargic & I'm afraid that it'll be his downfall against a speedster in the future. I just don't know enough about Powell to pass judgement here...but I got high expectations.
As a late addition...prior to the real bouts on Saturday night...wer'e doing Friday Night Fights.
Anthony Peterson (18 wins with 13 ko's) is back in the spotlight again on ESPN2's Friday Night Fights as he & Jose Soto (18 wins with 10 ko's, 2 losses, & 2 draws) try to work things out at the Fed-Ex Forum Arena in Memphis.
Anthony & Lamont Peterson have been making a lot of noise lately over boxing air waves to many a fan's delight. Lots of high hopes riding on both of these prospects.
Let's see if Anthony can retain his undefeated record as he steps up against...not a better...but a more experienced fighter.
Oh yeah...Anne "tha Man" Wolfe be fightin too...but I aint coverin that shat! If it aint Ali's baby girl...I could give a shat about some noo-noo boxers.
Things being what they are...all being said...I'm thrilled to be with you again my brothers & sisiters & sisters that are actually brothers trying to be sisters.
Pull up a chair, fluff the cushion on the couch, break out the remote, & pour yourself a cold one...the Event is but a day away.
If youv'e grown tired of the chips & salsa...branch the fwock out! There's all kindza other counter parts for fight night...Pop Tarts, Cookie Crisp cereal, pizza, & just about anything else that might tickle your gut...just get it stirring & let's get this thing underway once again...as I say to you all with love...
Cheers & koneecheewah bitches.
