Default Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds James Toney vs Sam Peter

Well ladies & gentlemenses...the wait is almost over!

For many weeks...maybe even a month now...wev'e all been debating on one of the most debatable fights of the year...Sam "the Nigerian Nightmare" Peter vs James "the Fattest Michigan Motor Mouthed Motha-Fwocka on the Planet" Toney & it's nearly here...nine more days!!!

So why throw this poll & this post up so early, dear Wacko?

Well...because I want this one to be debated to the bitter end & honestly...I'm actually excited about a fight involving JFAT...& that my friends is a monumental occassion...so cry all you want about this thread going up so dramatically early...but I want this matter up for discussion in a big way.

That & the fact that there's not a worthy fight on the tube for two handfuls of days...& I was bored. So there it is...moving on.

Wev'e all said so much about this fight...that there really isn't that much more to be said...right?

    Wrong.

I got some things to say...some things that might shock you...some things that you might expect...but either way...I'm just going to be honest with all of you to start & just throw it right out there...just to clear the air...ready?

    Okay...here goes:

I despise James Toney. I mean really...I can't stand the man.

There. I said it. You expected that...right? Right. No shock there.

Now...that being said...let's get down to the logistics of this match & then we can get into some things that might shock you.

    First off...the general specifics:

For this installment of Wacko's Drunken Round by Round wer'e headed over to the Staples Center in Los Angeles via ShowTime (Oh bwoy! Yes indeed...Jim Gray & the team) for a step closer to unification in the heavyweight division. This fight is pretty much all or nothing, with all resting on the line for two of the divisions most talked about fighters...James "Lights Out" Toney & Sam "the Nigerian Nightmare" Peter. Not only are we awarded with quite possibley one of the most obvious mismatches (Yup...you heard me right) of the year...but we get to see two fat guy's slugging it out for the right to be called the NABF's & the IBA's Heavyweight Champion...oh yeah...& it's also for the WBC's runner up slot too.

So, next Saturday...September the 2nd, 2006 it's all or nothing.

Now that that's all out of the way...let's all get back to the one word that Wacko threw out there that I think is the shock factor of my long winded tirade here: MISTMATCH.

First & foremost...let's look at the records of both fighters.

    Sam Peter (27 fights with 26 wins & 22 ko's & 1 loss)

    James Toney (77 fights with 69 wins, 4 losses, 3 draws, & 43 ko's)

Clearly...Toney has the edge in experience...but I am sure that many of you are scratching your heads in wonder & questioning..."How? How Wacko can you sit there & call this a mismatch in favor of the man that you loathe with every fiber of your being?"

    Simple.

While I feel that Sam Peter is exciting, powerful, &...well...that's all I feel. Peter is just exciting & powerful. That's about as deep as his talent pool goes. Honestly, I think that the kid is unrefined & everyone knows my outlook on boxing...power aint S*** when it's matched against skills.

So, once again I say to you...I can't stand Toney...but he may just be one of the greatest boxer of the last 20 years or so...yes...even on the level with my bwoy the great Bernard Hopkins. You heard it...BUT...I still don't like the fwocker.

The thing is...with boxing...you can't let a little hatred get in the way of the facts. The facts are plain & simple, James Toney has been nearly unbeatable in every category of boxing when he is on point & motivated for a win. I hate to say it...but Toney is Hall of Fame material & his ticket has already punched for the trip.

    So there...I said it.

Now...let's get down with the Wackster's Factors of the Fight.

The Factors for & against Toney:

    Again...be prepared for some shocks!

#1: Experience. This is a biggy, IWO. Toney's got this hammered out. Toney has seen & felt pretty much all that's out there. He's fought & sparred with some pretty large gents. So far at 200+ pounds...no one has had enough of anything to faze the man. No power, no speed, no skills...but I won't go in to the fact that I don't think he's faced anyone legit enough to mention. That would just be hate...right? Right. I can admit that. Moving on.

#2: With knowledge comes SKILLS. This, IWO, is what will dictate the fight & it will fall to Toney's favor agian. Toney can generally slip & counter anyone at any time...& he'll most likely make a night out of it against Peter. Toney is a defensive nightmare. He's also one of the most pure counter punchers of the game. He can come at you from any & all angles. I hate to use the cliche'...but James Toney is indeed what he preaches himself to be...oh so loudly: A Throwback Fighter of decades ago.

#3: Conditioning & age. This is always what I consider to be a fault of Toney's & one of the main reasons that I despise him so very much...not the age part...but the conditioning. I'm hoping that this factor falls to Peter's favor. We all know that I don't want JFAT to win. I'd love to see him flat of his back counting light bulbs & this could be the one factor to land him in just that very spot. For the last 3 weeks Toney has been screaming over phone lines & in reporters faces that he is going to come in to the ring in shape...that Peter's insults have pissed him off & that he is coming in to the ring to humiliate Peter.

#4: Power. The one thing not in Toney's favor. Toney has been spewing nonsense that he is going to knock Peter out. Stupid move. Peter has to date shown a pretty sturdy chin. The worst thing that Toney can do is try to go toe to toe with Peter...& I hope that this is indeed what he does. If Peter catches Toney...I think that we might actually see Toney's nick name "light's out" come in to play. The problem with that is...Factor #5.

#5: Chin. James Toney has never been knocked out. NEVER...in 77 fights the man has never been cold. He's been down a few times & almost out...Roy Jones Junior dropped him...but that was years ago. Then again...Toney's never been in with an actual knock out artist either...which brings us to...

The Factors for & against Peter:

#1: Power. Peter has the edge here. Toney hasn't done jack S*** at 200lbs with power. It seems that he really doesn't have the push behind his punches to hurt the big men. Peter is an entirely different animal. If anyone questions the opposition of Samuel Peter...I challenge you to look at Toney's track record in the heavyweight division...it aint all that either. Peter's a knockout artist...as cliche' as that may be...that's exactly what he is. He aint pretty & he's not the whole package...but he does come in to get the job done. Here's hoping he pulls a rabbit out of his a** on September the 2nd, 2006!

#2: Experience. This is a killer for Peter. He's raw talent...& Toney is nearly a polished diamond...nothing ruff around the edges. Peter has NEVER seen anything across the mat from him remotely close to Toney's skill level. The fight will get close & Peter's power punches will then become null & void & Toney can beat on him all night long. Countering & slipping is what is going to cost Peter the fight...those are two things that he can't pull...& those are two things that make James Toney what he is...James Toney.

#3: Stamina. This is a huge question mark for me, on Peter's part. Sure Peter went 12 rounds against hard hitting heavyweight champ Wlad Klitschko & took a pounding, so the question isn't really whether or not he can takes Toney's power...but Toney throws a lot more punches than Wlad...& he also slips a lot more punches than anyone that Peter has ever thrown against. IWO, Peter's stamina is going to be an issue...that along with the fact that Toney's going to be hard to hit. The more Peter misses...the weaker he'll get. If you have the Peter/Klit fight (heh heh heh) rewatch it, it showed in full effect against Wlad going in to the late rounds of Peter's first loss of his pro career in 2005. This is going to be another factor against the young power puncher when he climbs through the ropes with one of the slickest counter punchers of the weight class.

#4: Conditioning & age. Again, not so sure about conditioning...but I truly believe that Peter has the edge in the age department. It's basically a no brainer...but the conditioning part remains the sketchy one. Anywho, if Peter can use Toney's age against him & wear him down....maybe even use Toney's weight against him...he'll have a shot. By using Toney's weight against him...push him around the ring & tire him out.

#5: The Miracle Factor. This is what would benefit Peter the most. A miracle...or better yet...just some general ring ethics. If Peter were to actually come in to win & fight a smart fight...well...it'd be a miracle. Toney is often at his best on the ropes & IWO Peter is just stupid enough to think that he can put Toney there & beat him. Aint gonna happen. Keep the fight in the center of the ring...Toney seemed least comfortable there once he finally stepped in with an actual big man: Rahman. Peter doesn't have half of the talent that Rahman has, but he's got double the power. So...the miracle factor comes in to play. Maybe he'll catch a break & crack Toney...because let's face it...the kid's got power in both hands & all he needs is a handful of flush shots. Then again...Factor #5 for Toney rears it's ugly mug again...so maybe...instead of wishing for the miracle factor to materialize...everybody that wants to see Toney flat on his back should start praying...NOW.

Honestly...I see no way possible that Peter can win.

Not even on a lucky shot. Call me crazy...but that's the way I see it.

Prediction: James Toney by a long humiliating Unanimous Decision.

What I want to know is...what will this loss do for Peter? Mull it over & gimmee your thoughts.

So my fellow pundits & enthusiasts...pull up a chair, fluff the cushions, hide the remote, & pour yourself a cold one...if youv'e grown tired of the chips & salsa...branch the fwock out!

Chicken wings & pizza is a legit alternative...& besides...it's what JFAT would do.

    Cheers & as always...
    Koneecheewah my bitches.

    Agreed.

Toney winning this match does nothing for the division...cept maybe setting up a match with Wlad...which Toney will lose...badly.

Maybe Toney beating Peter ( ) is a good thing in the end...nah. I really want Peter to win by knockout.

Dunno whos going to win this one but am going for Peter by KO. Hopefully it is a good fight as the big division is needing some good publicity.

Im on the early shift at work tomorrow so I will hopefully get up an hour early and catch the round by round thread before I have to go. Will hopefully join in then but if I dont hope its a good evening for boxing and you guys.

Well I have to disagree with you here Wacko, on two points.

Firstly I love James Toney, his smack talk and arrogance gives some much needed character and personality to a heavyweight division populated mostly by non entities.

Secondly, that this is a mismatch I really don't understand at all.

Yes Sam Peter is about as skillful as Mayorga and Toney is as good as De La Hoya, but physically Peter is far better equipped than for example Mayorga was against Oscar.

Peter packs a huge punch and can KO heavyweights with one punch, Toney has an iron chin BUT he's not a real heavyweight so you would have to assume that if he gets hit flush he could go.

Toney's age is also against him, 38 years old! Peter is what, all of 26 or something.

Peter may be rough around the edges but he has only one defeat, to the guy who is unquestionably the divisions best AND he decked him 3 times!

This is not going to be an easy fight for James Toney, and I don't really agree with you saying that Peter can't take Toney to the ropes and win.

Yes Toney is a master at slipping punches but if he's trapped on the ropes with Peter reigning on him he'll be walking a tightrope and will have to slip every single punch else he's toast.

I'm really really excited by this fight, personally I think it's a crazy fight for either fighter to choose to participate in.

Peter, a crude brawler goes in with the most skilful and crafty heavyweight out there, whilst Toney, a short little fat man who should really weigh about 70 pounds less goes in with the biggest, baddest heavyweight currently in boxing.

For me it's a real pick em fight.

I'm leaning towards James Toney cos he's my favourite heavy but I'll be chewing my nails down to a stub whilst watching this one.

Im backing Toney all the way in this one. If he has really managed to stop the rot regarding his waistline then Im resolute he has it in him to keep the heavyweight division interesting for a while longer.

I too am very excited by this match up. The heavy puncher against the overweight defensive wiz....could go either way, but im backing Toney to do it because he is just so darn clever and at ease in the ring. Nothing fazes him....one punch could change all that, but it makes it all the more intriguing...

Im predicting Toney beats Peter by a wider margin than Wlad did....

I think (as much as I hate to type it) Toney gets a wide UD with a couple of scary moments in there. The only chance Peter has is to try to work the body from the start. Wear Jfat out so he cant slip and duck as easy. I dont see it happening thou.

cc for the early start wack.
