    Default Clapping push-ups?

In light of the pushups thread, and the general understanding that a rigorous boxing workout routine includes body weight resistance workouts such as pushups, has anyone ever done clapping pushups regularly in order to obtain that extra bit of explosive strength?

It sounds silly I know, but I figure it can't really hurt, unless I'm doing them incorrectly and injure myself.

yes, they're invaluable, if you can do them.

I like to say, go only as low as you can such that you're still able to thrust yourself off the ground. as you get stronger you'll be able to go lower. also do them with your hands positioned such that you're mimicing a punching motion as closely as posible. You can also do them on a swiss ball to help you distribute your weight if you can't do them otherwise.

I posted this a while back but what I also LOVE to do is take a towel, hold it with your hands about 1' apart, adopt a boxing stance and get as close to a heavy bag as possible. Now push the bag plyometeric away from you into the air. As it comes back, catch it with the towel before it comes back to verticle. This is like a clap pushup but you can do more of them and thus build strength, speed and endurance. Also keep those elbows tucked in. It's amazing how quickly the bag gets overwhelmingly heavy.

wow, sounds like a crazy workout.

When you say boxing stance though, i'm very much a peekaboo fighter, would it work with my palms facing inwards to me?

well, you don't PUNCH with your palms facing inwrds now do you? It's just a variation of a plyo pushup. And what I meant by boxing stance = left foot forward, right behind. ie, not square to the bag.

i don't see it could hurt. i do them every now and then but i usually find that diamond push ups are harder for me so i stick with them, but yeah i dont see a problem

Good plyometrics and fairly safe, as long as you have strong enough elbow joints. Get variation by changing the length of time you're down i.e. 1sec,2secs etc. The elasticity in the soft tissue diminishes over time - after 4secs it's almost non-existent.
