    Default Protein supplements

What are your views on protein supplements and if you like them what kind do you recommend?

createne is a whole different thing and for a boxer aint necessary....it is used for strength training and for explosive movements and adds on way too much unnecesary water weight.....protein should be the foundation and i take 2 shakes a day....with a good diet of course u can lose great amounts of body fat w/o losing muscle as long as u keep protein intake high...also multivitamin and glutamine are great

Really depends on your diet. and how much you are working out. Also factor in your overall goals . Do I want to lose weight or gain weight ? “ If your not kicking ass in the gym , you do not need all that much maybe just a shake in the morning , , if your pounding out 2 hour sessions then you need more , see what mean? too much protein will just make you fat and have bowel troubles, also can be hard on the liver ! Drink lots of water, and if your lactose intolerant take the capsules because the milk shake thing will double you over faster then a low blow . and the protein shakes without milk taste , well like Sh#t . IMO

    Hope this helps

Yes my routine is now cardio for 1 hour every morning and weights for 1 hour in the afternoon 4-5 days a week.
I guess I'm not wailing on the gym so since my primary focus at this time is weight loss, would you say that protein supplements are a bad idea at this point?

Yes, I would stay away from any protein or weight gainer supplements, eat lean meats like Chicken breast, rice and veggies , fish, and keep up a busy workout schedule and you will be in fighting shape in no time at all. , stay away from diet soda, I mean you can have a few but don‘t go crazy as it has lost of salt and will bloat you up. Plus some studies find that artificial sweeteners inhibit metabolism (the burning of fat)- Good luck

Not only is it NOT a protein, but it is used in conjunction with alot of water....Very bad for a Boxer...

    Now,

If you want Protein in your diet, I highly suggest getting it from foods you eat....Tuna Fish, Grilled Chicken, etc...

High POroteins and good complex carbs will build muscle and keep you energized just as good as anything..

Protein shakes are good for building, but not for boxers....they tend to put on to much weight...

    Good luck with training,

    Coach

and if it's fish make sure it's tuna or talapia or a white meat fish...fish like salmon and swordfish are used in muscle building/weight gain....

well erm, i was assuming that someone would come up with something like this. this is just a coincidence, but just today, i was reading various posts on a forum that has to do with coronary diseases because my father is having some problems (hopefully it's going to be just a minor operation putting a stent into one of his arteries), so i came up with an article about a 20 year old asking if fitness programme + using proteins could've caused him a heart arithmia.

The cardio-surgeon who answers people these questions answered that there is no way that proteins could be harmful nor for his heart nor for any other organs. in fact he said that these proteins can be quite useful both for people who do sports/fitness and people who aren't so active.

proteins aren't science fiction, if they we're harmful it would have been proved by now.

HOWEVER, bare in mind that everything has it's limits, EVEN proteins.

i'll paste this from a website.

In addition, eating protein at the expense of vegetables, grains and other healthy foods can deprive your body of essential nutrients. Plus, it can cause dehydration because it takes a lot of water to eliminate extra protein.

Excess protein also has been linked to bone loss because the more protein you eat, the more calcium you excrete, for reasons scientists don't fully understand.

A study conducted in 1998 at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., concluded, however, that people who eat excess protein probably can prevent bone loss by consuming adequate calcium -- or 20 milligrams for every gram of protein. Since bone health depends on a balance of adequate levels of protein and calcium, the best way to avoid bone loss is to eat the right amount of protein for your weight and consume at least 1,000 milligrams of calcium daily.
but since we're dealing here with OP who assumingly boxes 3-5 times a week... but please, bare in mind, i wouldn't say that this is what protein does. there is also vast majority of vitamines that can lead to hyper-vitaminosis in excessive use. if you keep everything in limits, you're fine.

Eating too little protein means your body can't perform all the functions for which protein is required, at least not at peak levels. Over time, you may feel tired and sluggish, be more susceptible to illness, and fail to build muscle or improve your athletic performance at the rate you otherwise would. You also may lose bone. At highest risk are women on low-calorie diets (less than 1,200 calories a day), competitive athletes who restrict calories and burn protein instead of fat, and vegans and macrobiotic diners who don't get enough of the amino-acid building blocks needed to synthesize complete proteins.
...In fact, protein expert Dr. Peter Lemon recently concluded that exercise more than doubles your need for protein.
Too much protein isn't the only problem with the popular high-protein
diets. All there are also loaded with fat, while Dr. Atkins' and Protein
Power are so low in carbs it's hard to fit in enough fruit, vegetables
and whole grains to lose weight healthfully and keep it off.
so it's quite important that you don't just go to the nearest fitness shop and buy the cheapest protein out there. Hopefully people from this forum who use it know which ones are better than the others.

I drink American Whey protien shakes before and after I lift.

I'm not saying it suits your needs, but I can say that it's a quality product.

protein simply put is the building blocks for your muscles. when you work out you break down your muscles, and protein is used to rebuild them, in the case of extremely strenuas excersize, bigger and stronger. why protein is an easily digestable form of protein in a large quantity, when you finish working out your muscles crave protein for repair, not feeding them results in little gain in size or strength.

the problem with alot of protein drinks are they contain alot of calories, something a boxer watching his weight doesnt need. if your in the middle/bottom of your weight class and need to get a little heavier to be at the top, then use protein supplements (as long as your of the age and have done your research.
people looking to maintain probabely shouldnt use them (unless they big guysm in which you need protein to keep your muscles from wasting)

people looking to lose are a difficult subject.
protein shakes can be used as great meal replacement, they stimulate your metabloism and stop muscle catabolism, however can put on extra weight/muscle if taken aswell as your daily eating.
