Thread: Who incorporates weights into there training here?

    Default Who incorporates weights into there training here?

    Well. Tell us about it.
    For example i box three days a week, sometimes four, then for two days on non-boxing days i do weights. All big compound exercises, low reps, high sets for strength. Things like squats, deadlifts, military press. Its hard because i find i dont move aswell in the ring if im aching the next day obviously, but if thats what it takes to get bigger then so be it.

    bigger and boxing don't really go together....it takes far more energy to throw an 18 inch arm than a 16 inch arm......of course weight training does help.....If you want to get bigger take up Bodybuilding....If you want to be a boxer you need to iincorporate explosive lifts (cleans, snatches) as well as some high rep lifts in order to succeed...also remember to STRETCH ALOT!!!!!!!!!!!!! I didn't for awhile...threw a body shot and completely tore my right bicep clean........sure I had 19 inch arms.....not right now......

    Oh i know dont worry. I mentioned the compound only lifts i do. Bicep curls gotta be bad news for functional strength.
    Im just sick of being the 10 anda half stone guy whos light on his feet, but got no real weight behind his punch.

    The Ragu is right. E-lifts are best if you lift. You want to make sure you're training speed strength and not just max strength. ie, fast twitch vs slow twitch muscles.

    Yea I lift. Not alot though. Not alot of need for it.

    Light weight, high reps. I do 3 sets of 20 reps. Also, when you get older, it's a lot less stress on joints, etc. That equals less injuries.

    Why would you want to do that many reps. Its no longer strength or even muscle size. With that many reps it turns into muscular endurance (although handy in its own right, surely boxing condition covers that).
    Still suppose it all depends on your goal.

    Exacly!!! There really isn't any need for that either as a boxer. That is what all the conditioning is for!

    Yeah I lift wieghts to be honest I lift weights everyday it is apart of my routine. I have been doing this routine for so long that my body does not get sore from it. That is the first thing I do is start my weights than on to boxing.

    I lift atleast 3 times a week - I'm new to boxing and will be learning the stuff soon...

    Just bought a 100lb heavy bag and a speed bag for the basement... I'm hooked, always wanted to fight legally, but I don't want to be a UFC fighter, I don't like the idea of getting man-handled down on the ground by another grown ass man.

    I started out 8 months ago at 168lbs, droped down to 158lb in about a month, and now I'm 171lbs.

    I've been focused on shoulders, arms, abs, back, and chest for the most part. I've always had big legs / calves (just my body type I'm one of them guys that are lucky to be able to pack on weight rather easy.) I enjoy bulking up but it will make for a less relaxed more tense fighter in the ring - which is not good, plus it takes more energy to throw. It can make you a harder hitter - but a slower one at that. Check into Iron Mike on YouTube, good example of a lifter that can throw (I know hes not into boxing, but he sure as hell knows how to bang hard.)

    Whats your routine like? Yes weights can slow you down and make you "stiff" but if done the right way they can help in every aspect.
    When you start boxing dude, move onto olympic lifts, the big ones like bench press, deadlifts, military presses (standing) and squats. Clean and jerks and stuff are good too but i suggest you get somebody to teach you those as they can be hardcore on your back.
