Default Junior Witter-Demetrius Hopkins possibly on HBO next month

Witter could fight Hopkins next month

By Ant Evans: Newly crowned WBC welterweight champion Junior Witter could make a rapid fire first defense of his title on November 25 in the McAllen, Texas.

Sources close to HBO have confirmed that Witter v Demetrius Hopkins - the nephew of legendary Bernard - is a fight HBO are very interested in for their Boxing After Dark card which will also feature Jesus Chavez v Julio Diaz.

Bradford switch-hitter Witter only won the last in September, beating DeMarcus Corley over 12 less than enthralling rounds in London on September 15.

Hopkins, 24-0 (10) is an improving fighter but, like Witter, he has yet to scalp a top 10 opponent.

However, this is a good fight for Witter. The relatively short notice would be a risk worth taking, as the bout would be promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and will give Witter the chance to wash away memories of his dismal showing against Zab Judah in his only other US TV appearance.

Interesting fight, kind of a surprising matchup if it happens

I like Hopkins in that one. Junior Witter is a poser IMO . He just trying to act like Chris Eubanks, but don't have the talent. Witter is a boring watch .

I think its interesting, I still haven't seen much at all of Witter. From what I've seen he's clearly the best guy that Hopkins has ever faced, and the hardest puncher. But Demetrius is faster IMO and maybe better fundamental skills, and he's got better power than 10 KO's in 24 fights would indicate. Both counterpunchers, could be a bit of a feintfest waiting game.

exactly. I just hope people won't fall a sleep before the Main Event. Chavez - Diaz is the fight of the night IMO .

I liked the relative ease he outboxed Corley with, and usually Corley can make someone look bad at least ONCE in a fight. But Witter completely outboxed him and made him quit fighting, never seen it done to Corley before. If the fight was boring to some then it was because Corley wouldn't lead and get countered because when he tried that he almost got stopped(or at least rocked)

What you do against a fighter like Witter, is you you don't lead. you have patience, make Junior fight out of his comfort zone. Witter wants to wait and counter . just wait. taunt Witter rather then play to his advantages. actually step back and bait a fighter like Witter , then cash his check when the moments right. . Too many fighters try to chase down these counter punchers all night losing on the cards . and thus play to their opponents strengths. the key is to find away to get the counter puncher to lead off and then press the attack.

I agree. But Witter is quick enough to lead too, he's just not as good at it unless he puts that cross guard up. But I don't see Hopkins not leading. Maybe a year ago, but not now.

Boxing is a lot like Poker . You want to get your opponent out of his comfort zone. when your hurt you put on show that tells opponent that your not hurt. and when your feeling great, you might squint little when you get hit , let your opponent think your in troubles. bait them and then Ba-MM . Pocket Aces !

I would try to make Witter lead if I was Hopkins. But you've gotta change it up some, lead some but he should make sure its controlled and use the jab first, he's got a quick, long jab (74 inch reach, nice for a jr. welter) which could make it a bit harder for Witter to counter.

Dont think Hopkins is quite ready for Witter yet. Witters fucking boring but he has got good countetr punching skills and frustrates opponents a lot.

Still (mentioned this on another topic) who thinks its disgraceful that this is on HBO yet they dont show Kessler-Beyer ?

I don't know if he's ready or not, well see if it does happen, I do think the choice is a bit odd though, I would have thought they would have picked a guy for his first HBO date that might be dangerous, but not so akward like Witter is. Who fights like Witter, not many people, definitely nobody Hopkins has fought.

I don't have any problem that this is on HBO, its an interesting matchup IMO, but I do agree it was ridiculous not to show the Kessler-Beyer fight.

It does seem a strange career leap though doesnt it. D. Hopkins hasnt really thought anyone with real "contender" status and now hes jumping straight in against a seasoned awkward opponent who's also a world champion. I respect D.Hopkins a lot for taking this risk though.
