    Default Erik Morales appreciation...

I'm alittle drunk right now guys but I wanted to share with you a few thoughts about Erik Morales...

I was never a big fan of his but I thought It took a helluuva lotta balls to jump back in the ring with the human buzz saw that is Manny Paquaio.

I don't think the guy was ever in a dull fight. He tried his best today and engaged Pac man when his best bet would have been to jab and move. I was very emotional seeing him on the deck, especially watching in a bar with about 100 phillipinos whooping and hollering - but hey that's what you do when your man has just destoryed somebody of that caliber.

After the first round my friend said to me 'Erik looks shot'... And I was upset, because he was right.

Morales is a true warrior and finally all the wars have caught up with him.

Wonder if Barrera will have the balls to give Pac-man a rematch??

Anyway, goodbye to Erik Morales - far and away one of the best, most exciting fighters I've ever had the pleasure of watching in a boxing ring.

Just watched the fight. Was very sad to see Morales mauled like that. He looked so slow and weak, that was amplified by Pacquiao being so fast and strong.

No shit Mepmphis - In the first round when they were feeling each other out Morales looked like he was fighitng in slow motion. But, as pointed out by Ice Cold, Morales is so full of balls that he tried to go toe to toe anyway.

Very sad, but I've said it before and I'll say it again - this sport has very few happy endings.

Heck, i wouldn't mind being a dollar behind him !

Perhaps the hunger was lacking? perhaps the natural-weight gaining processes of aging took too much out of Erik to keep getting down to the weight?

or maybe he went too often to the well in career...and when he went their recently, the well was empty?

eitherway - morales is a gutsy basterd and will be a boxing legend.

    CC, nice posting

I didnt manage to see the fight live but even after getting the fight I delayed watching it all day. I dont know why, but I just couldnt bring myself to watch it. I even stayed away from the message board in case I saw the result. Im a huge Morales fan, but I knew as well as anybody that it would take a monumental effort to pull this one off. Pac has been getting better and better and Morales' recent results have been patchy. But still I clinged to the hope that when I finally watched the footage it would be the Morales upset victory.

I eventually brought myself around to watching it and it was tough viewing. To Morales' credit he fought back everytime Pac landed something big, but the Pac handspeed was so overwhelming. It did look like Morales was fighting in slow motion at times. Just couldnt stop those punches landing. The 1st knockdown saw Morales caught more off balance than anything else. He came back admirably. But to go to war so early was kamikaze and though I admired him for coming back from the knock down in such a punchy spirit, it wasnt something he could keep up for 2 many rounds and being caught like that. I jab and move assault would have been far more effective IMO. Maybe Morales realised he couldnt go the full 12 anyway. Who knows?

The 3rd knockdown was a tough one. He was punched accross the ring and he really didnt want to come back from that one, and who could blame him? He knew he couldnt turn the tables.

Morales should now retire with the dignity of having gone out fighting. All props to the great man for all of the great fights from over the years. A true great. Its sad when a favourite fighter bows out, but he is bowing out with money in the bank and body relatively intact.

Morales sitting out the count, shaking his head, and winking at his corner just signified what he most likely already knew before the fight - that he didn't have it in him anymore but he needed to make sure

Sad seeing a great fighter lose like that although it wasn't really surprising. Hope he retires and stays retired.
