    Default Sparring With Taller Brawlers

Im sparring with someone who tends to puch down more because he has some height on me. So even when I do get to the body I do take a little damage, but whenever I get in he starts throwing almost wild but he looks composed. And can get back in defense mode. We both are orthodox? Punch power wise we seem about the same. Any advice?

I hope he's not tagging you off the top of your crown while you're in the clinch. If that's what you mean, find another sparring partner.

If he just has some height on you and you're having some difficulty getting in, that will come with ring experience. If you are a stalky fighter who is shorter than your opponents you'll need three things to get you where you want. Lots of slipping, quick feet, and an aggressive style. The tall ones learn to fight on the outside so take that comfort away from them.

Thanks I have another question, how usefull is a maize/slip bag. Have you used one and if so could I improve using it. Because even though I try to spar as much as possible, sometimes I will miss the sparring days. And other days the people I liek to spar with aren't their. So could a slip bag help me improve?

Just the fact you are trying different things and the desire to improve will make you improve. We have a slipping bag at the club because my partner is a consumer and likes to buy things. I didn't learn to slip on it, and for the beginner it might be confusing. I like to set up the rope and have the boxers moving forward and backwards with the punching while they slip under the rope. Maybe you allready have done this and need something more advanced. Therefore the slipping bag would challenge you more.

A little game we play could help. Get a line acrossthe ring thick elastic preferd, get a partner about the same size on the same side as yourself then take it in turns trying to get the other side of the line from where your partner is by feinting by using your feet with head movement to con the other guy into moving the wrong way its a lot of fun and works

Yeah i like the rope thing, its good work, and you can feel the speed in your waist breaking increase when done regularly.

Well I know how to slip I've done it before but is the weakest part of my defense. I can catch punches, parry them, duck under them, sometimes side step. I just want to work on my slipping. Im going to try the rope thing, I've done that before but not recently and it will probabaly do me some good.

Scrap I don't completely understand your post. Let me see; you tie a rope across the ring and you stand at one end while he stands at another. And you slip under the rope while he stands stil land like shadowboxes you at the other end?

No you stand an arms lentgh away from each other on the same side, its areaction thing and technique.what your intension is is to get to the other side or make him move before you do by trying to con him by tapping the rope with your head by moving your feet and moving up and down the line while doing it when you go under youre back the other side before he is and keep it going. Its hard work but fun get a good partner and its all about speed of movement and thought
