Default How many of you hail Sugar Ray Robinson the best ever????

this guy was and still is a very special boxing talent, he would fight be fighting all the time when he lost to lamotta he had a tune up fight then the rematch with lamotta in under a month, now that is a natural athlete and unheard of these days, he was a ballydancer with gloves on anybody he faced looked like they had to left feet, the right hand he hit graziano with is picture perfect and so the left hook he hit basillo with these punches are textbook

i allways thought ali was the best and maybe i still do but my eyes have been opened to how great Sugar Ray Rbinson was.

As Ali said, i am the greatest heavyweight of all time, Sugar Ray Robinson is the best boxer pound for pound

I will go on record saying that Sugar Ray Robinson was the G.O.A.T.
For every story told that divides us, I believe there are a thousand untold that unite us.

I've been hearing either Ray Robinson or Ali from my uncles since I was 10 years old. Since I like Liston and Foreman so much I have no choice but to say Ray Robinson.

Although my grandfather was a Joe Louis advocate....

I'd go with Robinson as the greatest ever. Ali was probably the greatest heavyweight of all time, although for my money Jack Johnson runs hims close.

Robinson was good but how good. In the 40s and 50s make no mistake you had to be connected if you werent you didnt make it, thats my gripe. There were certain fighters that he wouldnt touch and you could get away with it because of the mob,. If you Headlined the Garden you were connected. Probably the best middle at that time was Ezzard Charles they wouldnt let him near a title until he was ill, yet he still won one. Look at his record its impressive. Forget the Marciarno fights hed already got the desease which would kill him

One comes to mind. When he was NO 1 Contender for the welter Title Beating Zivic, It was Zivic got the shot. Robinson wanted triple the money he was getting to fight him killing the fight with the qoute Im to pretty to fight Burley, because he knew that hed get what he got when they sparred.

After Boxing for 11 years, Going into the Randy Turpin fight, Robinson had a record of 128-1. And thats fighting the best, in a time where there was no such thing as a padded record.

I don't think either is the greatest all time... For his time perhaps Robinson was the greatest, but I believe there are better fighters out there... He got hit too much, and as he was a special offensive fighter, but his defense had holes.

Taeth, I make you right, Show me a great fighter Ill show you a great Promoter who got him there and a better matchmaker. Promoters big ones have an in with the press, they look after the press the press look after them if not the press get there passes revoked simple. In the good old days if you didnt play straight with the mob you had a problem. There was no TV so if you were out of town youd read the account of the fight through the press reports which were the report the promoters wanted the masses to read. If you ask a Boxing fan today about, Eddie Booker, Jack Chase,Bert Lytell Charly Burley, LIoyd Marshall , Aaron Tiger Wade They wouldnt have a clue. Probably they would have heard of Marshall in Britain because he KOd Freddy Mills in a round but he is the only one With Holman Williams They boxed each other to put bread on the table While Robinson Boxed stiffs. Yes Robinson was a great fighter but had an easier path and was connected.
