He was lighting quick at hw but he struggled with some heavy hitters i think he could of been excellent at lower weights had he stayed there anyone else agree ??

I totally agree.
Maybe if the Cruiserweight was installed at his era it could a been different.
Not big enough to hang with the real big boys
But what a left hook though
Id say absolutely, I mean he's basically an All time great at Heavy despite being outweighed all the time, fighting in a great era.. He could have easily continued to make Light heavyweight even Im sure, the man never weighed over the 180's in his entire career. He was not a Heavyweight by today's standards, he would be small for cruiser.
Agree totally, he could have been the greatest light heavyweight of all time. Liston, Ali etc were to tall and strong for him. What he achieved as a Heavyweight is truly remarkable considering the giants we have today.
He Boxed Joey Maxim at Lt heavy early on got beat in a close one. It was to early, I think history makes him a great Cruiser.

Yes i see about that Scrap and this is what i see about Maxim vs Patterson decisionOriginally Posted by Scrap
All 11 sportswrtiters at ringside scored for Patterson though.
I reckon he would of been Mike Tyson of Lightheavyweights shame Patterson lost to Liston in way he did he was always good guy Patterson.Originally Posted by p4pking
What surprised me watching some Patterson fights vs Ali and Cooper was speed of Patterson he was damn quick one of fastest hws ever imo.
I think he was one of the yougest Gold medal winners in the olympics 17 at middle.

Meldrick Taylor won gold medal at 17 as well i think.Originally Posted by Scrap
Maxim was a damned good fighter....Patterson was good at 175 and as big as he was he should have been better at heavyweight but the training wasn't there for him to build up weight and still be effective with his style.
168 may not have been out of his reach either had that been there at that time
Damn rite ICE COLD! Alwyas thought that, he was a very good fighter. Flying up the weights when he hada small frame for a heavie wasnt the right move but it says a hell of a lot that he won the title even then! BLISTERING hand speed.
Agreed,as a true cruiser/light heavyweight Patterson could have ruled the roost for quite a while
But just like Christi Martin shouldnt be fighting at Super-Middleweght but is,at the time Heavyweight was were the money was,but Patterson really didnt have the frame for it
Agreed again with Cockney and Trainer plus watching Patterson vs Ali fight 2 even when Floyd was past his prime he was giving Ali some problems he looked quicker than Ali but Ali was too big for him Patterson had style just like Tyson and had quick speed like him i will say it again it would be like young Mike Tyson in Lightheavyweight.
The mere fact that very few cruiserweights since the advent of the division have been able to move up to heavyweight says it all.
Czyz couldnt do it,Toney hasnt been able to do it,and Jirov is heading back to Cruiserweight
So how on earth did anyone expect Patterson to hold up against a bear like Liston?
