Default Ref In UFC Better Than Refs In Boxing ??

Not big fan of UFC but watched it few times and i like how ref jumps in quickly to stop guy getting seriously injured unlike in boxing when they let guy get battered and don't step in does anyone else agree ??

i kinda disagree. In boxing you can't get pummeled on the ground after being knocked down. in boxing a fighter can be hurt but not that hurt if he is still standing. i watched a few ufc fights also i have seen guys get fucked smashed with blows to the head when on the ground and almost out cold and thats why i don't watch it anymore. i don't like the idea that you can hit a man when he is down and hurt

I have to completely agree with that.

If anything, I feel the exact opposite of the original post.
Where boxing refs seem to be the ones who jump in quickly before a guy gets seriously hurt (Calzaghe - Manfredo for example)
Not sure how you can compare boxing stoppages to pummeling guys who are on their back.

I think the ref's in the UFC are a lot better as they seem to possess common sense, a trait too often missing in amongst boxing ref's.

I actually think the UFC ref's seem to make the correct call more often, stopping a serious beating sooner but crucially giving a guy every chance to fight back. I've not seen many fights in the UFC that I would say were stopped too early wheras in boxing it happens all the time.

What I like about the UFC ref's though is that they are more vocal and active in a fight when they need to be. If a fighter is getting tagged and not fighting back they will be right next to them shouting, 'You gotta show me something here kid' or words to that effect wheras in boxing they just seem to stop a fight with no warning or let a totally one sided beatdown occur without warning the fighter either way.

I guess it's a consistency thing. To be fair though, there are only 3 or 4 UFC ref's compared to probably a 100 or more boxing ref's so your bound to get a bigger shair of Lawrence Cole's in boxing than the UFC.

I think b/c of the glove size its just easier to tell how hurt a fighter is and how many clean shots they are taking in MMA versus boxing so its easier to make a good stoppage versus a premature one. I put a big onus on a fighters corner to have his best interest in mind. If a guy is just taking a beating but still able to defend himself the ref isn't going to stop it. Its on the corner to do the right thing.

I think some of that is because it is easier in UFC to get into an obvious dominate position against the other fighter. Where in boxing it is harder to tell (most occasions) who has the dominating position. Also agree with VanChilds about the glove size.

Its apples and oranges really. In boxing there isnt a real big need for a ref to football tackle a guy off.In UFC they do this to prevent a guy from getting his arm broken,or another serious injury.

Put it this way, there are very few (maybe none) controversies involving the ref either stopping it too early or too late (Tito v Ken II springs to mind but even so I thought it was a good stoppage), where as there literally thousands of fights in boxing tarnished by an awful referee or decision, it happens very often, and not just little ones too, but main events, world title fights etc. Another yard stick is the fact that there has never been a death or serious injury in the history of the UFC.

Ya, UFC has never had a death, but keep in mind, they've only been around for a decade or so. Give it some time, it's bound to happen at some point.

Boxing is a dangerous sport, but I think it's gotten much safer over the past few decades. Watch a fight from the '50s, '60s, '70s, you'll see fighters who are completely out on their feet and defenseless, and the ref will let it keep going.

Back in the day, you basically had to go down for a 10 count for the fight to stop. I think most refs do a good job of stopping fights on time these days.

i wouldn't say better, tougher is the word i'd use. I got money on John Mccarthy vs any 2 boxing refs.
