    Default Mayweather-Castillo I

I had a lot of free time tonight, and found myself watching some random fights from years past.

I haven't watched the full fight of Castillo-Mayweather I for a couple years. I remember how controversial it was and how many think Castillo was robbed. This was the first time I've scored it. I had it 114-112 for Castillo. Castillo was the aggressor for the majority of the fight, however floyd was willing to exchange, but did a lot of running as well.

All three judges had it for Mayweather:

John Keane – 115-111 for Mayweather
Jerry Roth - 115-111 for Mayweather
    Anek Hongtongkam -116-111 for Mayweather

Lederman had it 115-111 for Castillo. All of the HBO announcers scored it for Castillo as well.

Punch stats: Castillo out-landed and was more accurate than mayweather:

    Total Punches
    Castillo Mayweather

    203 Landed 157

    506 Thrown 448

    40% Percentage 35%

    Power Punching Stats:

    Castillo Mayweather

    173 Landed 66

    377 Thrown 151

    46% Percentage 44%

Castillo was champ, outworked Floyd, outlanded Floyd, and controlled the ring. It was a very close fight, and I'd say Floyd did land the cleaner/crisper punches. There is no way I could have scored this fight for Mayweather though. Anyone see it differently? Remember this is only the first fight, don't even say a thing about the rematch!

Yeah...that's why I said I don't think Castillo was necessarily robbed...it was a close fight.

It's interesting cause Floyd had all the pieces in place...some might say his style wasn't completely perfected at the time but it was damn close to it.

I didn't score Oscar-Floyd, but I feel Floyd easily won that fight. I wonder why Oscar couldn't corner Floyd. People say Oscar abandoning the jab was his mistake, but I think he should of tried to bully Floyd more and work him to the body. Castillo was really effective cornering Floyd and pounding him to the body and I think the ring size in PBF-Castillo was larger, too.

It would've been interesting to see Hatton-PBF...especially that Hatton that showed up for Tszyu.

I don't think it will prove a whole lot if Hatton beats Castillo...Castillo has seen better days. And if Hatton loses to Castillo I think it's a BAD sign for where things are headed for him.

Castillo won it fair and square in my eyes and it's only until recently I saw the stats to confirm it. I could accept the judges giving a draw rather than a loss to Castillo but to have Floyd by 4 rounds and even 5 by that Hongtongkam guy...... Castillo worked his arse off in that fight.

Yep, I had Floyd winning by a VERY small margin.

Both fights were close. The first one could have went either way, and the second was a close win for Floyd.

As for Castillo, he's been getting alot of crap about his last performance. He didn't look good, and it seems that after Corrales 1, some energy has left him. Also in question is his weight, and determination. But, in Castillo's defense, in the past few years, he has beaten Lazcano, corrales, and Casamayor. That's pretty good to be claiming he is washed up. Maybe he is on the decline, but now that he has made the 30 day weigh in, he seems to either be at the right weight, or his fire is re-lit. We won't know until fight-night, but Castillo is a dangerous man, and if you look at his career, it has been up and down. Still got to give credit for him never eating the canvas, even when he was out on his feet.

I scored the first fight a draw.

The compubox stats in that fight are misleading. Many of Castillo's landed blows were light right hands that he threw when the fighters were in a clinch. While waiting for the ref to step in, Castillo would repeatedly hit Mayweather on the side. This is completely legal, but misleading. Since they were right hands, they count as power shots, when in reality they were no more damaging than a stiff jab.

It's funny I watched this again a couple of days ago, I thought Castillo won it 6-5 with a round even, but it was a pretty ugly fight and it was a bit tricky to score. I think it was Floyd's worst performance and one of Castillo's best, obviously overall Floyd's a better fighter but I think watching that fight, the 2nd fight and De La Hoya v Mayweather I think Hatton most definitly is capable of beating Floyd. Hatton came out today and said something like "Mayweather is really talented, but as far as being a tough guy, I've had tougher dinners," Hopefully something this pisses Floyd off and he wants to fight.

    Floyd will beat Hatton.
All I can say is I hope we get to find out, and we'll agree to disagree on who we think the victor will be . It seems to me your quite clued up on Mr Mayweather, can you see him taking this fight?

If Floyd and Hatton ever fight, I'd prefer that it happen in the UK, but Madison Square Garden would be awesome too.
