    Default Bobby Fischer - R.I.P.

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22724870/

The man had his issues for sure, but in the sense that he dominated his contemporaries like none before or since, he was arguably the greatest to ever play the game of chess.

I was just going to post this. Although I personally think Jose Rual Capablanca was the greatest ever chess player Fischer was a tortured genuis and a maverick nonetheless.

He was slightly nutty, even by Bilbo standards, but a genuis all the same.

as for who was greatest modern era player, yes you can make a case for Capablanca, or Kasparov. Depends on your criteria. But my point is that the difference in ability (or rating) between fischer and his next closest competitor was greater than either of those two. Anyways, it's probably a close enough call to make it not worth arguing about.

Indeed, there are a few players that could be given the top spot. I liked Capablanca because he was the greatest natural talent, a guy who could turn up drunk and then take two or three women to bed with him after his inevitable victories.

Still its great to see another chess fan on the boards

He was quite the American hero when he kicked the Russkies butts in '72, but yah, he's made himself unpopular with many since then, with hist post 9/11 statements among other things.

....and he never described himself as a jew either....he's of the ethnicity but I don't believe he ever identified himself with the religion......or the stereotypes which is what I think really annoyed him

What pissed me off about Fischer is that he berated Dick Schapp right after Dick Schapp had passed away and to be even more of an asshole he berated Mr. Schapp infront of none other than Dick Schapp's son Jeremy Schapp

And also he was extremely un-American when he went into exile.....he was a lunatic and I'd piss on his grave if given the opportunity

Most genuises are a little eccentric Rains. It goes with territory of having an exceptionally large and advanced brain.

There are all slightly cookie as their brains have about 10 trillion thoughts per second and they are always thinking about higher things than the 'normal' folk.

Anyways got to dash I'm just putting the finishing touches on my hyperflatable, incombustilator with translux capacitor flow and micro orrifice.

Once she's blown up I can get out the special lubricant and I'm good to go!

    Bahhh!

He had a communist stink about him but I still respected his chess skills.

After all, Hitler was Time magazine's "Man Of The Year" once upon a time...

They made Hitler 'Man of the Year', wow that must have been almost as embarrassing as when they labelled Britney Spears 'America's Darling'.

At least they saved face for the Hitler faux pax by going to war with him, with Britney she's an American citizen and they can't even deport her let alone drop bombs on her.

Well in fairness Man of the Year' isn't neccessarily a good thing or a bad label. It has more to do with how influential you are in the world. Which undeniably Hitler was one of the most influential people ever...

A computer beat me at chess once.

But it was no match for me at kick boxing.
