Default Iran Barkley And Saoul Mamby Set to Fight Feb. 23!?

Ive been away for a couple of weeks but I had to stop in to post this one, sorry if its already been mentioned. Iran Barkley is 47 and lost his last string of fights years ago, I heard he is broke and needs the $$ If that is true this is sad for Iran and for boxing. He had a great career and shouldnt have any financial woes, but that is the biggest problem with boxing...anyways Mamby is also set to fight. Yes this is the same Saoul Mamby who made his pro debut in 1969 and went on to fight Duran, De Jesus, and many others. He was a good fighter but he is now 60 years old! Like I said if its for money this is very sad but if he just likes to compete good luck to him.

This really is getting out of hand. This Is for the natural Instincts that every man has.........survival I.E money,a house, food, paying the bills and supporting family,But this Is a mind F!!! to see and while I'll never deny a guy the right to earn a living, theres no way these guys should be fighting.Mamby was basically forced to retire and now some Bum-f!!! commission Is going to sanction this?? Shame on these pimps and sharlentins for endorsing these two fine fighters and even better people fighting. They should offer there efforts ,time, capital, and "concerns" to backing some type of reform to make sure they can retire in peace.Isn't there a way they could earn just as much with out the Insane risk's at this stage buy doing public speakings, Books,autographs.........ANYTHING but getting punched In the face when there days are so far behind them, there blurry...Last time I saw Barkley was on ESPN as a guest analyst and It was hard.
I dont want to see these guys on a stretcher leaving the ring. There needs to be a unified commission!!! period.
    This sucks

How in the hell are they allowing Iran to get back in the ring.
Last I saw an image of him his face/appearance did not look good at all.

Sad really if this is allowed.

Problem is guys like Thomas Hearns (And I am the biggest Hearns fan you could get) comeback for a fight at that age and win...So it gives these guys thoughts on "Well if he could do it"......Then there is the old fighters mentality that they always have one fight left in them...add that to money problems and you have a bad combination...

These guys fail to realize that just because they fought in the era of the other elder returning fighters does not mean they should attemp the same things.....

Not to mention they see guys like Virgil hill and B-hop in there at just 3 and 4 yrs younger competeing at a top level and it further adds to the delusion

Any boxing commissioner willing to let this fight fly should be fired from their jobs period!!

I don't care if the fighters passed a medical exam. Barkley was a finished fighter when he retired back in the 90's. He became a punching bag. They are now willing to sell this fight? Off with their heads!

This is just pure wrong something needs to be done to support retired fighters cuz this just cant go on ,i read an interview with Iran in a boxing monthly a while back he lost his last 6 as a 230 pound heavy weight ffs man this guy shouldnt have to fight, this makes a mockery of our great sport if this goes ahead commisioners wake up and see some sense and have some Goddam logic !!!.

Yes to all the above posts. Lots of good points in this thread. Unfortunately some motherfunking state athletic board somewhere will always sanction a fight.

It basically comes down to..(and I said this about Tommy Morrison as well)...If you can pass the physical you can fight.....There are no other guide lines...though there should be....a few I always thought should be mandatory to be able to fight as a pro were....

    1. You must have some sort of amateur experience..No less then 10 fights...You can fight in the amateurs until you are 39...IMO guys should get a feel on what they are up against even if at a miniscule level

    2. A fighter who developes a massive slur brought on by boxing or has been Ko'd more then 5 times in 2 yrs should not be licensed

    3. Once a medical suspension is issued it is permenent

It'd be great if they could do something like that but I'm not holding my breath.

Maybe its time to introduce a mandatory retirement age in Boxing. These guys are just doing themselves and the sport more damage.

I drove to Lapwai last Saturday to see what was going on. Iran Barkley, who was quite out of shape, fought an exhibition match...3 rounds with Chauncy Welliver. Saoul Mamby, who was quite in shape, wandered around and charmed everyone buit did not fight. They were both very nice and posed for pictures and signed autographs. It was good to see these old warriors in this setting and not in a sanctioned match.

No doubt letting Barkley fight at this stage is downright criminal. But hey, it's his life, so good luck.

Boxing is starting to get like Tennis and Golf, with a seniors circuit

Bob Foster will come out and fight Dawson if this trend continues
