What do you guys think about the Flyweights?

The division and the fighters themselves? Now i know lots of casual watchers would rather watch two heavies slug it out than two quick guys duking it out with quickness. So i wanted your guys knowledgeable opinions on what you think of both the fighters and the weight class itself.

Couldnt give a shit less? or do you follow them as with any other weight class?

Also what do you guys think of the current Flyweight Champs? I've watched Nonito Donaire fight before, but not so much of the other two Japanese champions. I've read that they been playing duck and hide, do they really not stand that much of a chance against Donaire?

Hate to say it,its the bottom rung of the popular divisions. Not alot of power down there, so its less fun to watch then the bigger divisions for your average punter.
Though in my opine Donaire rules the roost right now

I follow all of the div.

The Flyweights is kinda lacking "Big Names" unless your a hard core fan then it's different.

IMO, Nonito is the king of that Div. he's #1... and has superb skills.

Sakatas gotten old and he's on his way out. But what a brilliant Japenese fighter he was.

Narvaez is well on his way to greatness and taking his place next to other Argentine greats. Hes an exceptional boxer who uses great ring generalship.

Naitos OK, but for me he's nothing special I just praise him for beating PongsaShit WorthaShit for the WBC title.

The future of the Flyweight div. is Koki, Inom, Panomroonglek. Good fighters but have lots to prove.

To be honest tho all the action is taking place one div. up or one div. down....
Sup. Flyweight with fighters like: Mijares, Munoz, Montiel, Vic, Navarro, Arce, Gorres & Vasquez.

Light Flyweight with fighter like: Calderon, Solis, Cazares, Sosa, Segura & Roman.

I must admit my interest has grown in recent months.

My pathalogical detestation of Christian Mijares means I am keenly following the division in the hope a new contender will rise up and punish him.

If only Juan Manuel Lopez would move down a divison.........

Yeah, i get where you're comin from mick. Thats what im askin, what would it take for the casual fan to even want to follow a flyweight? If not knockout power? Would he have to come in with the charisma and grace of Ali? The sweet, graceful yet devastating style of Sugar Ray Robinson? Or it just the sad truth, that the casual onlooker would always put it past a lighter weight fighter, thinking they wont put on an awesome, HW worthy fight?

I just wonder if there'll ever be anyone in the division dazzling enough, that'll make people say "man screw the heavyweights for once, you gotta check THIS guy out"

An excellent division. Sakata and Naito don't duck anyone:look at their resumes. Naito stopped twice by Pong,one the fastest ko in FLyweight history.Yet he still fought him and beat him in a 4 fight series. And Sakata has been fighting tough fighters all his career. His last few fights have been v tough,undefeated fighters and he's faced guys like Parra and Vazquez. IMO,Parra in his prime,woul have beaten Donaire. They aren't ducking anyone.

And it's s superb divsion. Most if not all the fights are action fights.

I think theres too many weight classes, and down that low the seperation is small. You take a dump and your in a different weight class. As far as watching , hell yeah the lower weights are funner to watch IMO. Just less superstars.

lol yeah scratch that. Its was really foolhardy of me to question that. Being a fan of combat sports and watching with buddies, i know it better than anyone else..if they dont see a knockout within 5 minutes the channels being changed.

But i'd consider you much more than a casual fan, and even you yourself will admit, its a lower rung on the ladder of boxing, in terms of popularity. In your opinion, What would it take for that to change?

Difficult division to follow because of the lack of television coverage.

However I would gladly watch a flyweight fight, particularly a Donaire fight.

I like the flyweight division and to expand on what CutMeMick said, I think some of the Light Flyweights will be moving up there soon, It's kinda like 140 lb division right now not horrible but not nearly as deep as the 135 or especially 147.

Personally I love them. Action fights from start to finish, I love the quick pace. There are not as many big KO's as in the higher divisions of course but you can't want for more action. The same goes for the rest of the little guys. I wish they would get more tv time.

Nonito Doniare is going to be a legend by time he is through. Ivan Calderon is one of the best in this era, Ulises Soli and Giovanni Segura in the light fly div are 2 of my current favorites.

Sometimes you can catch the little guys on sopcats during the day in some of the Japanese sports shows.

I think the KO of Darchinyan really scared a lot of these little guys off. That was a 1 punch KO equal to that of any other division. Add Doniare's all around boxing skills then look at some of the stiffs these Japanese fighters face and the answer is there for you.
