Default What should be the legacy of John "The Beast" Mugabi?

The Beast had an Excitement Factor of 90% which I define by dividing total KOs by total fights His record was 42 (KO 39)- 7 (KO 6)-1. He iced many a tough opponent and perhaps his best showing was in his lost to Hagler where he gave a solid account of himself. Had he not returned after a 5 year "retirement," his record would have been 38-4.

All in all, I say he was an extrenly entertaining fighter during a time when many brawlers did their thing on TV. He could pop and be popped. I think his legacy should be colored with respect.

    What do you think?

Mugabi's fight with Hagler is one of my favorites , i often wonder how good he would have been is he hadnt ran into the Marvalous one , or had he beat Dwaine Thomas , would loved to have seen him fight Matt Hilton at LMW ,

I will always remember John with a smile.

John was a very good fighter, but I think Hagler took something from him. Not necessarily physically, but mentally. You feel so indestructible, then run into a guy who can take everything you offer. His losing to Hagler gave his future opponents more confidence against him also.

HAHA Matthew Hilton. I remember him. Great Left Hook, shitty conditioning and dedication. Same with his brothers Davey and Alex (now they have all been in jail numerous times, robberies etc)

An interesting tidbit. Their Father Dave Hilton, also trained Joe and Arturo Gatti for a while when they were young.

Another tidbit: Buddy McGirt once beat Joe Gatti; then trained Gatti's brother, Arturo.

He had an excellent fight with Hagler which was superb to see and he looked good getting KO ed by terry Norris.

John Mugabi is a fighter who could have been an ATG if he was brought along better...

They should have tested Mugabi a bit before putting him in the ring with Hagler....

Marvin ruined Mugabi.....though I am a fan of Mugabi (his style won't allow otherwise) I blame his team a lot for his short comings....Almost like Fernando Vargas being rushed so soon into big fights and how it ended his career long before it should have

Mugabis career is that of fighters who are punchers and just have brutal fights and whos flame dies out fast...

Mugabi was a very good Amatuer with a good pedigree. Micky Duff was at that time a terriffic Matchmaker with good contacts in the States, and was good at knowing when to take Fights eg Honeygun Curry. With Mugabis life style and no love for working He wasnt going to be around long Micky lost a lot betting on the Hagler Fight, He was confident of mugabi winning having had a few of his Fighters Box Hagler. George Francis bless Him Told me Mugabi was the worst Boxer for messing about He had ever worked with. He made Georges life a misery.

Made on legit one hit power but he also comes to mind when ever someone raves and hypes up a fighter with emence KO percentage.....until that power is taken and/or countered by a top tier fighter and when the tables are turned, then you ask "Now What"?? There has to be a plan B.

Mugabi fought the fight of his life vs. Hagler but as previously mentioned....at a taxing price. His follow up lose to Dwyane Thomas was just insane and he was tagged with the "quiter" lable.......busted eye socket or not.
