    Default ~ MLB Thread ~

I'm not really a big baseball guy but living here in the Tampa area this city is going crazy how this team has turned the whole club around in just a years time. Last year they were one of the worst teams in big leagues now they have made the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.
I'm actually pretty impressed with them and I would love to see them make run at the world series.

yet no one else in your area feels this way, hence why they still can't sell tickets..

red sox nation on the other hand, over a hundred consecutively sold out games.. i actually feel bad for the rays players, because they get shit for support..

And how long has the Red Sox franchise been around compared to The Rays?
If the Rays continue to win and get better then there fan base will grow.
Like I said originally I"m not a big baseball guy, actually not even from this area (Tampa) but I think what the Rays have done this year is pretty danm impressive.

i was wrong, the streak was something like 456 sellout games for the sox starting in 2003.. they broke the record.......... It's no coincidence that they won the worldd series in 2004.. more people were interested because they had a good team..

which is what i'm saying i wish would've happened in Tampa Bay.. and you are exactly right, what they did was impressive, and they still couldn't fill the seats, which sucks for the players.. it isn't like they were an expansion team this year, they've been around at least 10 years, and the baseball season is the longest season in mostly all sports, it's not like they weren't in first almost the whole year, so i don't buy the fact that they're a considerably new team.. a lot of the sports casters in my area talked about it almost every game, how there were empty seats and what not.. maybe florida doesn't have many baseball fans.. although i bet when the marlins had the big year they were selling out the stadium.

You might be right about Tampa not being a baseball market. I know there is allot of transplants down here from say NY and Boston and allot of other northern states. Most people that grew up with a team are not going to change there team because they move to a new city also ya know, that might be allot of the problem also. I know I"m a a huge Buffalo Bills fan have been for my whole life and because I live in the Tampa area I don't plan on being Tampa Bay Bucs fan, just an example. But I just like you feel bad for the players I mean they put a winning team on the field this year and hardly anyone has shown up. One thing I did hear the other day on the news was there was about 1000 to 1200 people at the airport the other night when the Rays flew back into Tampa I thought that was pretty cool to hear.

definitely good to hear that.. the fans play a major role in professional sports.. whether it's tickets/luxury box sales to give the team more money to work with, or just straight up moral support.. In boston/new york, the media is crazy, and the fans are die hards, but those are things that can motivate players to be passionate about their team.. Every time i hear an interview of a sox player, or even a yankee player, they mention how great the fans are..

and generally, from a business perspective, if you are winning games, then your GM is happy, because you are drawing fans in, thus making the business more profitable.. also making the coach's job security a lot better

Alright a bit late on this one...

    But nonetheless here it is...

    Let's pick and talk.

    Phillies over Brewers
    Cubs over Dodgers
    Red Sox over Angels
    Rays over White Sox

If the Cubs when the World Series I will be happy simply because it means the Dodgers didn't. That would be a devastating blow. Luckily, I don't think they will.

Um I picked Brewers eons ago like 3 years ago to make a run at this thing in the future, when they got Sabbathia I thought they got the Central along with him but that tremendous depth they had in their rotation early in the year is just gone. Manny Parra has really come undone in the second half of the season and aside from Ray Durham (who I would love to see get a ring) they really don't have much veteran leadership on the club and it has showed in a big way. They lost today but that's no surprise because I'd be surprised if Cole Hammels got beat this postseason he is pitching lights out at the perfect time.

To bad the Twins didn't make it, the White Sox need 8 innings from their starter if they want to do anything because that bullpen if they want to do anything. Dynamic offense that can explode whenever it wants but really they have no shot.

I haven't seen a whole lot of the Rays but Johnny Gomes is the man.

I can't believe the Angels and Red Sox are going at it again. That's such a tough one, definitely a tooth and nail series I think the Angels might have it this year though it definitely will not be a sweep again I think they exercised thoes demons in the regular season.
