LOS ANGELES -- Boxing great Oscar de la Hoya who announced his retirement Tuesday at the Nokia Plaza, a stone's throw away from his bronze statue at the Staples Center in downtown LA, will have a reunion of the past champions he had met in the ring throughout his career, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer informed the media during the tailend of emotional press conference.

The date will be on Sep. 19 during the Mexican independence weekend celebrations.

The gathering will be a veritable gala of boxing stars who during their heydays dominated the boxing headlines in the past two decades. De La Hoya (39-6-0) took on all comers to amass a record 10 titles in six different weight divisions.

De La Hoya entered into the American public consciousness after he won a gold medal in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He turned professional in November of that year and later was involved in high profile and memorable fights against an array of boxing stars including Genaro Hernandez, Jesse James Leija, Julio Cesar Chavez, Pernell Whitaker, Hector Camacho, Ike Quartey, Felix Trinidad, Shane Mosley, Arturo Gatti, Javier Castillejo, Fernando Vargas, Luis Ramon Campas, Bernard Hopkins, Ricardo Mayorga, Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.

De La Hoya became boxing's golden boy and its cash machine registering the top grossing PPV event in history en route to a total 14.1 million PPV buys and $696 million gross revenue in 19 PPV appearances.

De La Hoya, 36, said his retirement from the ring was expedited after he was soundly defeated in a one-sided beatdown by Filipino superstar and current pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao last Dec. 6 in Las Vegas.

Schaefer promised that the Sep. 19 gathering of boxing stars will be one of a kind and an event to remember.

i know for a fact Trinidad wont attend, him and Oscar don't really get along much, and i've seen it in person that although they are civil with each other and respect each other they don't necessarily like each other and Tito wont be going lol, i kinda have a feeling Whitaker would go, might get some bucks out of it and he's been working with some fighters as of late, or so i've heard, this would be a good way to throw his name back into the picture as a trainer

    .
only cause it was in The Wilfredo Gomez gym, same gym Tito would train, and well he does still visit the gym on occasions, but i've seen how these two are at the fights here (GBP fights on the island), they only talk to each other when it's for the TV, other than that they just split, they DO NOT like each other and make it very well known, that's why the only reason that the rematch never happened was because both fighters had big heads when putting up the price

Congratulations on your retirement Oscar . Whatever people say about you doesnt really matter, bottom line you carried the sport of boxing here in the USA for the last 17 years, because of you the sport was watched by all boxing fans even non-boxing fans. You had a great career, including a Gold Medal, and a 10 time world champ. In my opinion you should be in the hall fame. I know you might never read this, but you made me proud being a Mexican-American. Now its on to bigger and better things. Oscar was a badass regardless of anyones opinion. It's sad how people always hate on boxers at the end of their carreers or when they start to deteriorate as fighters. Oscar did things in boxing that very few people will ever do. I don't think he ever imagined he would become such an accomplished person thru boxing. Viva De La Hoya!!!!!! Keep making millions homie!
