I used to be friends with 3 promising cebuano/filipino boxers.Namely AJ BANAL,MICHAEL DOMINGO,and MARK JASON MELLIGEN. I was retrieving my files of the 3 pugs cos i wanted to introduce them here in this great boxing forum.

MARK JASON MELLIGEN, TO MAKE WAVES ON MAY 1ST IN LAS VEGAS

    By Rod Mijares
    PhilBoxing.com
    Fri, 24 Apr 2009

Lurking in the shadow of 'The Battle of East & West' between Filipino Manny Pacquaio and Englishman Ricky Hatton at MGM Grand Arena on May 2, 2009 is the Top Rank Promotion’s Boxing Event at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on May 1, 2009, a day ahead of the mega fight.

What is more interesting on this fight is the Las Vegas debut of what could be Top Rank’s best kept secret who will show his boxing talent and skills wide open for the Americans to witness. He made his first fight debut on American soil in Commerce City, Colorado on March 7, 2009 and he was so successful that his opponent, Mexican Gerardo Cesar Prieto, quit. Prieto did not answer the bell signaling the start of the 6th round. His face showed an unbearable pain he suffered during the last five rounds on his body and head and could no longer endure more heavy and strong punches from his opponent.

What a great start for this boxer, one of Top Rank Promotion’s top prospect. Mark Jason Melligen (13(10KO), 1,0) from the famous ALA Promotions in Cebu might be Bob Arum’s next golden boy that will follow the footsteps of Manny Pacquiao, Top Rank’s greatest and most popular people’s boxer ever promoted to-date. Melligen is not so far away from this reality, from the next big thing. Melligen was the 2003 and 2005 silver medalists in the Southeast Asian Games held in Vietnam and in the Philippines, successively, before turning professional in 2006. This youthful prospect is only 23 years old and Melligen has the boxing skills and the determination to win it all. He has the power punches and most of all, has a great and outstanding defense. “I could see very well the punches that are being thrown by my sparring partners and my opponents every fight night,” he confided in me every time I see him. That is good defense.

Tony Martin, ALA Promotions Las Vegas based trainer well-prepared Melligen for his first successful fight in Colorado for four months. Weighing the gravity and the importance of this forthcoming fight on May 1st at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino for Melligen’s future, ALA Promotions also sent Edito Villamor, their Philippine based trainer, to assist Tony Martin ensures a win for Melligen.

Edito said, “he is in top shape and in great condition. We trained for one month in the Philippines and we are training for about a month here in Las Vegas. At 146 pounds now, he is slowly getting into the fighting weight of 141 pounds. He is a sure thing to win as long as he displays the moves and performs the way he is training come fight night.

“Mark preparation is going according to plan. Both myself and Edito are more than satisfied with his progress. His sparring partners are from various gyms in Las Vegas. Come fight night we are more than confident that he will give a good account of himself and will make Top Rank proud of his performance. As far as we are concerned, he is in the best condition of his career and there should be no excuse other than to win,” Tony Martin added.

Melligen’s opponent is Las Vegas based Mexican Ramon Montano (17(2KO), 6, 2). The 26-year old Montano gave former WBC lightweight champion David Diaz a tough fight before losing on March 15, 2008 at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino. His experience and orthodox style will give Melligen something to think about and this challenge will be good for the viewing boxing fans.

The main event will feature lightweight Antillon Urbano from Maywood, California against Tyrone “Fists of Fury’ Harris from Lansing, Michigan. Antillon who previously defeated Bobby Pacquiao, (Manny Pacquiao’s brother) on March 13, 2008 also at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino has 25 wins with 18 knockouts and no defeat while Harris has a 23-4,0 record with 15 knockouts. Also appearing will be welterweights Alfonso Gomez, a former reality TV contestant on “The Contender” and Juan Manuel Buendia from Mexico..

It is also interesting to note that two more Filipino boxers will also fight in the same bout at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino with Melligen. Lightweight Dennis Laurente from Palompon, Leyte (30(16KO), 3, 5) will fight American Marvin Cordova, Jr. (20(11KO), 0, 1) from Las Vegas. Gerry Penalosa’s top prospect, Michael Farinas whose left hand is so formidable than his chinky eyes will also see action.

This is a great boxing event for Filipino fans in Las Vegas and should not miss this memorable journey for Filipino boxers. Base ticket prices are from $20.00, $35.00, $50.00 and $75.00. Tickets are also available at Tickets for Concerts, Sports, Arts, Theater, Family, Events, more. Official Ticketmaster site. The first bell will start at 6pm.

Former world junior lightweight champion Cornelius Boza Edwards has been impressed by Philippine light welterweight champion Mark Jason Melligen (12-1, 9 KO’s) who is training at the gym of Roger Mayweather in Las Vegas.

One of the top pound-for-pound fighters in his time Boza Edwards lost his WBC super featherweight title in a stunning 5th round knockout to Rolando Navarette on August 29, 1981 in Viarregio, Italy.

Longtime Cebu resident and boxing trainer Tony Martin informed ALA Promotions chairman Tony Aldeguer that Mayweather who is a brother of Floyd Mayweather Sr and an uncle of the former pound-for-pound No. 1 Floyd Mayweather Jr who has retired, was also pleased with the sharpness shown by the hard-hitting southpaw after a hard day’s training.

Martin quoted Boza Edwards and Mayweather as telling him, the 22 year old Melligen "punches hard, is fast, is relaxed and in excellent shape."

Melligen sparred "eight sharp rounds and showed no signs of f atigue" according to Martin who failed however to identify his sparring partners. He said that in addition Melligen went five rounds on the mitts after the sparring and that "his speed and power have really improved" since training in Las Vegas.

Since Melligen’s March 7 bout is in Denver, Colorado which is at an altitude of around 6,000 feet, Martin makes him run in the mountains every day in Nevada.

Mark Jason Melligen is Confident of of Beating Montano

Philippine light welterweight champion Mark Jason Melligen (13-1, 10 KO’s) is “confident and ready” to face Ramon Montano in a 140 pound bout at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas on the eve of the showdown between Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao and Britain’s Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton.

Trainer Tony Martin who is working with Edito “Ala” Villamor in preparing Melligen for his second fight in the US following an impressive debut at the Mile High Center in Colorado when he scored a 5th round TKO over Mexico’s Gerardo Cesar Prieto, said Melligen has “gone under intense training” since his return to Las Vegas last April 4."

With that win on a Top Rank card, Melligen earned a shot at Montano who has a record of 17-6-2 with 2 knockouts.

Martin told BoxingScene.com, insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports that both he and Villamor have been working “on all aspects of his (Melligen’s) skills in preparation for the showdown with Montano at the Hard Rock Café in Las Vegas on May 1.

Martin said Melligen’s sparring “has been very good and intense and will continue that way.”

While fully aware of Montano’s credentials, Martin, a longtime Cebu resident said both he and Villamor realize how important this fight is to all concerned. He added, “make no mistake, when Melligen steps into that ring he will be fuly focused and more than ready to perform at his very best. We are confident.”

Montano was a onetime sparring partner of Pacquiao and dropped a majority decision to then reigning WBC lightweight champion David Diaz on March 15, 2008. Some months later Pacquiao battered Diaz into submission in nine rounds to win the WBC lightweight crown.

After his win over Montano, Diaz said “he was a real tough kid but my conditioning really played a part in the second half of the fight. I hit him with some good, hard combinations in the later rounds but he showed a lot of heart staying in the fight.”

In his last fight Montano scored an impressive fourth round knockout over Arturo Ramos.

Melligen who took the Prieto fight at 147 pounds just to get a chance to show promoter Bob Arum what kind of a fighter he was will now go back to fighting as a light welterweight when he battles Montano.

Melligen dropped Prieto in the third round with a left straight and continued to punish him, forcing Prieto to quit at the end of the 5th round.

Melligen said his opponent was big and a light middleweight who came in at 165 pounds and although Prieto “hit hard I could handle his power easily.” Melligen also noted that his opponent was “a little slow and I could see the punches coming.”

The win was a confidence booster for Melligen who lived up to predictions that he would overpower the heavily built 30 year old Prieto who dropped to 6-6-1 with no knockouts. Among those Prieto had fought were reigning WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto and undefeated Vanes Martirosyan. The 22 year old Melligen improved his to 13-1 with 10 knockouts.

Melligen, Laurente Notch Big Wins in Las Vegas
Posted by: Ronnie Nathanielsz on 05-02-2009.

    By Ronnie Nathanielsz

Providing what was an auspicious start on the eve of the Manny Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton showdown in Las Vegas , two promising Filipinos Mark Jason Melligen and Dennis Laurente scored impressive victories over tough, quality opponents at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

23 year old southpaw Mark Jason Melligen, a light welterweight, scored a lopsided decision over one-time Pacquiao sparring partner Ramon Montano who had also dropped a split ten round decision to then WBC lightweight champion David Diaz on March 15, 2008.

Melligen who has been training in Las Vegas under longtime Cebu resident Tony Martin and Edito “Ala” Villamor, watched by several Filipinos including Congressman Monico Puentevella and boxing man Rex “Wakee” Salud won a unanimous eight round decision with one judge scoring a shutout – 80-72 and the two other judges giving it to the hard-hitting southpaw 79-73 and 78-74.

Laurente also overcame another former Pacquiao sparring partner Marvin “Much too Much” Cordova also by a comfortable 77-74 margin on the scorecard of all three judges.

Melligen sized up his Montano in the first couple of rounds before hammering Montano with solid combinations and completely controlling the bout to impress fights fans with his performance. His record now stands at 14-1 with 10 knockouts while Montano dropped to 17-7-2 with 2 knockouts.

Melligen made his US debut at the Mile High Events Center in Colorado last March 7 when he won by a 5th round TKO over veteran Gerardo Cesar Prieto. Melligen was leading 49-44 on the scorecards of all three judges at the time of the stoppage.

Respected boxing patron Tony Aldeguer of the ALA Gym told BoxingScene.com, insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports that he had spoken to Melligen after the fight and the youngster said he was “excited” adding that “his prayers were answered because he wants so much to help his parents.”

Aldeguer said that Melligen will remain in the US until July since Top Rank matchmaker Bruce Trampler was working on getting him another fight before his US visa expires in July. Aldeguer said there was no point in Melligen returning to fight in the Philippines because there was no Filipino at his weight who could give Melligen a competitive fight.

Longtime Cebu resident Tony Martin who together with Edito “Ala” Villamor trained Melligen in Las Vegas told us earlier that Melligen’s training had been “extremely good and he has trained hard.” Martin said that he and trainer Villamor “are pleased with his condition and all of us are confident going into this fight.”

31 year old veteran Dennis Laurente, another southpawimproved his record to 31 3-5 with 16 knockouts with his win over the previously undefeated Marvin “Much Too Much” Cordova Jr who dropped to 20-1-1 with 11 knockouts.

Laurente was coming off a win over Arturo Urena who retired in the 6th round because of multiple cuts under his left eye. Pacquiao’s conditioning expert Alex Ariza informed us that Laurente looked sharp in sparring and although Coordova Jr was a good fighter he predicted Laurente would win.

Cordova was coming off a ten round split decision win over Derrick Samuels to win the WBA North American Boxing Association US light welterweight title last August 23.
