    Default Handspeed

Hey guys, I know that there are probably a hundred threads on guys asking for RJJ speed and the answer is most often genetics. But for me handspeed has been a problem for me lately. Thanks to my defence I never get hit but neither does my opponent. I find I telegraph my intentions and they are written all over my face (Im going to work on that as well but my speed can definitely be improved). I watch guys like Floyd Mayweather Jr and especially Roy Jones Jr and look in awe (and with much jealousy ). I know they are genetically blessed individuals but as a slick outboxer (describing the style) I really need more speed than I have. I want to land my punches not just "look busier". If I could land more of my punches that would be great as I have pretty good power but they just dont land that often. Any suggestions guys?

Keep of the Heavy Bag, it slows you down.To much impact on the elbows, where the speed comes from. It tightens the Tendons on the Triceps, slows movement. Get on the Top and Bottom Ball more

This may sound stupid Rocky, and yea, genetics does play a majpr role.

But one thing I have noticed in increasing handspeed, is alot of it is in the mind. I mean, I have worked on tellng myself, 'throw faster. snap faster. Quick man, Throw Quick!" day in and out before ever stepping in the gym, days off, when drifting off to sleep at night. And that shit works.

I'm not discounting various physical methods, am sure as Scrap suggests, there are good and bad ways of going about it. But never underestimate the power of the mind.

I once had a Boxer in the Gym, who was tested as having the Fastest reflexes ever recorded in Britain 1/6000 of a second. Also He was the slowest Puncher in the Gym. He thought to much

Have to agree if the think tank is full you are slower.

Free fight shadow boxing just going nuts getting them out there with no thought, moving and hitting.

(no need for pre thought, you know exactly how to hit already you've done it millions of times already).

Do it without gloves dont grip your fingers stay loose. Warm up all your joints, stretch them lightly, fingers wrists elbows shoulders then totally, shake hands out, shake arms out, get them floppy and free feeling.
Then free flight air punch from a low relaxed guard, with your arms relaxed ,with out thinking anything or analyzing just have total fun for while and make some mistakes. No power just touches.Just jab or do rising straight shots vary when your loose enough between elbow out and elbow down so that you incorperate all muscle structure around your arms. Also if you hold a smile and have fun, your brian will give you more space to work within any given moment.

Then after a few sessions of free flight, not caring and you feel more free and empty; you then start to only think about getting your hands back; very fast, as fast as you can ; that way you go past the pre thought of moving them outwards. If the thought isnt there at all ,how can they read it on you?

The try hitting someone but your whole intent is getting your arm down onto their lead arm as fast you can after the face contact and then throw your other hand. After that, you go on and only think of the second punch etc etc out into into free flowing combos of pure speed; but start at the begining and hit the stages or you'll over think it.

lol, I'm not sure if you guys are dogging on what I said, or maybe missing my point. Or think I am completely wrong.

What I suggest is, or was trying to, is that you do alot of your thinking regarding such things long before you get into the ring. To have it be instilled already into those receptors of the brain, so when in fact you are in there...there is no longer that need to actually think so much.

Or you guys think I am completely off? lol

Yeah agreed mate your right the mind controls absolutely everything.
My thoughts are thatto go into the moment fully and run at your best you have to do so freely without thought at the moment.
Think before ,train before, but don't get stuck in that rut once you know or you'll bring that into the fight.

Preperation is where People go wrong most of the time. Forget about Punching, think what you want the muscle to do then train the muscles adaptability to perform the action. Train the muscles Tendons and Neurons to perform what you want them to do. There are loads of little things you can do for speed of movement before applying it to practice.

Wesrman, I like that saying but its not really what I meant. Sometimes its a good idea to try another form of movement in another Sport which compliments an action in Boxing of a joint. Its an enjoyable way to think opposites, always remember Ray Leonard up to 15 was into Gymnastics. Memory is an odd thing, but precise in many ways. Doing what many would consider strange things at the Uni at the moment, the results justify the thought. Just to say I was sent a Proffesor in Sport with M S who had trouble walking. Working on opposite Biomechanics for 5 weeks She was able to walk Her Dog 4 miles a Day interesting.
