anybody know?
anybody know?
He signed with Goldenboy a couple of months ago and was supposed to fight on one of the cards that got canceled.
Yes, for the THIRD time now, he's had a fight canceled on him. He was supposed to take a tune-up fight on the Mosley/Berto card, but we all know what happened there.
The first time it happened is when he was supposed to fight Kassim Ouma as a co-feature fight, when a week before the fight, JMM pulled out of his fight due to his hand injury. Then of course, he got screwed over by Pavlik last spring.
I feel so bad for the guy, he hasn't fought for 16 months, by no fault of his own.
As fans, we forget what theses guys put themselves through to get ready for a fight, and don't think about what they go through when the rug gets pulled out from under them.
Sergio let me share this email I got from him just after the fight was canceled, and I asked him if it was okay to post it, because I thought it was something that people should understand. So I posted it on his website, but I'll post it here as well.
This is what Sergio wrote to me.......
Hey Diane, sorry to have to say the entire card is scratched. I am so demoralized and frustrated with this recent cancellation that I haven't even absorbed it yet. I received a call from Cameron Dunkin informing me of the cancellation and it was confirmed by Golden Boy not long after. I was in shock! I didn't want to accept it and I refused to believe that this would happen to me AGAIN! This has happen to me so many times in my career that I should know how to manage the frustration by now; but to honest with you, I don't. People will never truly understand what it feels like for a fighter to commit himself physically, mentally and spiritually in preparation for the potential punishment of a fight. I have, will always take my camps 100% serious. I put my body through months of misery and torture to assure that victory will be worth the pain. The beginning of camp is always the worst. Especially after being off so long. The bumps and bruises and all the soreness that comes with the initial shock of taking your body to the max. The blood, the sweat, the stress, the weight loss, the running, the lifting the countless sparring, the sacrifice all for nothing. I can now say "all for nothing" because Golden Boy has informed me that there is no dates available until March! Which means Im looking at about a 16 month lay off before I get back to action!
I can honestly say that the life of a fighter (most fighters) is just that, a fucking fight. A nonstop fight with life's battles and destined misfortunes. Not to mention the struggles with managers, promoters, critics, the media and so on... But even a fighter has a limit. Even a fighter has a breaking point. And what happen in Haiti was Andre Berto's breaking point. Do I agree with his decision to cancel? No! Personally, something like that would have inspired me even more... But do I respect his decision? Absolutely! We all have to respect his decision. A lot of people have their theories of why Berto pulled out, but in the end, it does not matter and their thoughts are irrelevant. I don't care to speculate either. All I am concerned with is the future and wonder what will happen next? I have no idea. But one thing is damn certain, I will keep fighting...
Last thing I've read, he's fighting Pavlik on april on the same day Bute will fight, HBO will broadcast both events to promote a future Bute-Pavlik bout would the 2 of them win.

"There's nothing special about him." -Sergiy Dzinziruk
He should have never waited for Pavlik, it was obvious that Kelly wasn't interested in a fight with him. He wasted a lot of time sitting around.
For every story told that divides us, I believe there are a thousand untold that unite us.
The thing is, they had a signed contract, and if he would have taken another fight, they could have sued Sergio for breach of contract. Plus the fact he was working on trying to get out of his contract with TOC, who was probably one of the worst promotional companies to be stuck with. He then got out of that contract, got a real manager, and then they had to negotiate with different promotional companies for the best deal, and that takes time. It took 3 months to finally get a deal with Golden Boy.
He should do what Victor Ortiz is doing and just take fight at the Nokia theater on that Fight Night series just to stay busy
...if we're lucky he's face down in a ditch somewhere.
Well that's not very nice, seeing as he and Diane are friends...

- and I quote from some random guy on the internet
He may have had some bad luck, but a fighter must find a way to get in the ring, I don't accept that he has done all he can to get back in the ring. He's been out as long as Floyd's retirement. 16 months now. So he was scheduled to fight on the Berto/Mosley undercard, why not reschedule with the same opponent? I'm sure ESPN2 would be happy to have him on.

Trust me, Sergio has been begging them to get him into the ring ASAP!!! He told them that he didn't care what card, and that it doesn't matter if it doesn't get televised, just get him on a card, but Golden Boy told him they don't have room for him until March. He's at GBP's mercy basically, just like he was at TOC's mercy. TOC didn't live up to their contract of getting him at least 3 fights a year, that's how he was able to get out of his contract, but that took time. He HATES that he hasn't been able to get fights.
Sergio wrote that note to Diane from her basement where she currently has him chained to a radiator.
jk jk.
Bad luck for him. Hope he gets in the ring soon and without too much rust.
