Thanks for that. What always strikes me about Rocky is his ability to move his head but also to step in and throw off of it. Those things combined are what made him so effective despite his height and reach.
Nice find.
It's always difficult to say anything definitive or come out with any relevant comments from a few minutes of old film, but here goes:
- interesting that he was using heavy punches on the speed bag. Charley Goldman defined Marciano's natural fighting style early on and then ALL of his training was devised around that. He didnt bother trying to iron out any of Rockys technical deficiencies, but made sure that he accentuated all the positive ones to the best effect possible. Most fighters work on the speed bag to develop their hand/eye and excercise their shoulders ..... Marciano used it to bob and weave and to land short, hard punches.
- His strength and power are evident here. Marciano was freakishly strong for his size. he was making some big dents in that heavy bag and he was seriously solidly built wasnt he. He was also bullying and shoving his sparring partner around very easily.
- we wasnt as clumsy as history has made him out. he timed the speed bag really well and was landing a lot of sneaky jabs against the sparring partner.
- he had very bad hands, didnt he? They certainly were protecting them during training!

Nice vid. Thanks for sharing.
He Who Is Brave Is Free
Wisdom, compassion and courage are the three universally recognised moral qualities of men.
Rocky Marciano wıll always have the most specıal place ın my heart of all boxers. Here was a man who dıd what all of us dream of doıng. What were the odds? Serıously lets thınk about ıt. The son of a shoe factory worker. Yes he was strong and had good coordınatıon for baseball. But the guy started boxıng later than anybody I ever heard of who was anythıng decent. How could he have done what he dıd? 67 ınch reach. Slow. etc.
Thanks for watchıng. By the way that was a 323-pound heavy bag Rocky asked to be specıally made for hım.
Was it just me but that speed ball technique was poor and skipping was dire. His back muscles were immense but his sparring was very raw and crude.
Do not let success go to your head and do not let failure get to your heart.
he didnt start fighting until he was quite old, and he was completely raw and crude. You can see that when he's hitting the speed bag ...... but dont be fooled. Rocky was a decent baseball player and he always had good hand/eye ...... ignore his balance, ignore his technique - but look how many times he hits that speed bag bang on with hard punches, and how he land his punches on the sparring partner with surprising accuracy.

Never a fan of Rocky..fair play for what he achieved with his limited skills though. I just dont place him high at all on the ATG list of heavies. He was in a very weak era and made the most of it. Fair dos to the man..can only knock over who's in front of you I suppose.
he took punches that others could not have taken. walcott I fıght should have been stopped ın the 12th round after Marcıano took a ghastly beatıng.
