    Default check hook, check hook

    Hello,

in this video, right from the start, when Floyd is shadow-boxing, his coach is shouting: 'check hook, check hook, show how you check those punches"
Could anyone break down this for me?

Generally, I have noticed fighters practice hooks, uppercuts in a special way when shadow-boxing (examples are Broner, Jones, Ward), special because it looks somewhat different from when they are hitting mitts and such. Could anyone explain me that?

    Thanks!

Haven't looked at the vid yet, but how I understand it, it is a left hook in motion, or sidestep plant and release. Basically a side step to the left to counter a straight right, especially a telegraphed one. And can work extremely well in that kind of scenario with a person rushing forward trying to knock your head off with a power right.

I practiced it quite a bit a few years ago for one particular opponent whom I knew was going to do this and when it worked it was magical. He ran towards me in the corner, big old from the ground type KO straight right punch, ...side step hard left hook...and it spun him like a top. Carrying his momentum. I closed back in and by that time he was a turned right around in a complete circle and walking into punches as now I was moving forward. Was pure magic. One of those times you practice something and it comes off 10x better then you ever hoped for.

You can sort of see what he is thinking in imagination there.
What Youngblood is talking about side step and hook you can see him practicing more at 1:18 to 1:25.
I dont know what 'check hook' means really ; id be thinking glove goes up to the side of the head checking a long shot, roll with it slip under as the your same blocking arm drops down and goes back around the outside of his extended arm as you adjust stance and hook, Even better; double hook, check slip one low hook, step in adjust into one high hook just as his arm lowers to the reaction of the first hook.

Funny but if you step off his center line and into his rear arm still facing him then throw a rear hook of your own it goes right through the path of his lead arm if he threw it in reaction to you going in there. That would be a real check hook, block with the outside of the arm while the hook lands. You'd be working right in the hole though and using center line tactics and choking out his rear arm with your lead glove and fighting the other arm with your rear at the same time for it to be safe.

    I can explain it.
