Default Southpaw VS Orthodox and the pivot!?

As a southpaw facing an orthodox fighter, what way do you pivot to avoid the various punches?

Ive been told to never pivot left as a southpaw otherwise you will get nailed by the orthodox straight right.

Ive also been told to avoid the right cross jab and left hook by pivoting to the right? Is that correct? It seems like the pivot wouldn't really get your head out the way of those punches?

If you are pivoting to your right (and he is not stepping over to stay in front of you), then you will get outside his left foot. This will put you outside of his left arm and out of range of all his punches.
That is why you see so many orthodox fighters stepping to the left and throwing the left hook to the body vs southpaws. It keeps the southpaw in front of them.

Thanks grey, it just feels like it wouldnt get me out of the way of an incoming shot enough, if a right cross was coming towards my face it feels like a pivot to the right wouldnt get me out the way enough (ie only just) and that he could just slightly change the direction of the punch and still hit me!?

I dont side step before I pivot or anything I just spin on my front foot by pushing with my rear foot.
