Small robbery.... but Mercer did it to himself by not having good outings previously. And, of course, Lewis was more marketable.
Next time win by ko's and don't be lousy against guys you know you SHOULD beat....

When motivated Ray was a tough fighter. I thought Lennoxwas lucky to get the decision in this and the second Holyfield fight.
Lennox won the fight and he proved he had a good chin. He mixed it with Mercer and gave as good as he got. It was in Ray's place with his family in the front row and even then he could not win. This was one of Lennox' s best victories, do not try to take it away.
Do not let success go to your head and do not let failure get to your heart.
Mercer lost 2 points even before he got into the ring... all Lennox had to do was flick the jab fort he first 2-3 rounds and it was pretty much game, set and match.
The reason Mercer lost and had to knock Lewis down, at least, was because he was a spotty fighter and you couldn't predict his winability (new word) moving forward. You could have done a better job with predicting Lewis's winability and with that- why rob someone with real ethic, real potential (not that Mercer didn't have potential, at least) and a will to want to be the best for someone who was half hearted with all of what he was gifted with?
And even THAT Mercer still put on a good showing- as good as it was and won technically and on standard points. But he was already 2 points down even before the fight started- and probably a little tainted in the eyes of the judges because of his lack luster history.
As said, small robbery... I won't fuss about it. Worst have happened!

lewis fought his ass off that night, dogged out a draw at best. mercer won the fight. by 1 or 2 pts.
i thought ray won too.
This was the fight I stopped calling Lewis a total joke. No robbery here, just a war
I think this was an extremely tough fight for Lewis and Ray is a very tough fighter but...
(a) Lewis still deserved the decision imo. He did enough to win.
(b) Ray was not really on the same level as Lewis and in fact was a poorer boxer than most of the top contenders, even some of the ones he beat!!
(c) Lewis was extremely lazy in this fight as he could be in many others too and it's only for that reason that Ray performed so well and...
(d) Ray fought the best fight of his career and still lost.
Also please note, a man above believed that not only did Ray do enough to beat Lewis, but Holyfield beat him in the 2nd match too. Absolute rot! In no perception of that fight could Holyfield ever be described as "winning" that fight!!
And a quick look at Ray's highlights...
Was getting flogged by Damiani, pulled off a lucky KO.
Was getting flogged by Morrison, pulled off a lucky KO.
Lost to geriatric Holmes, proof of his lack of skills.
Lost to Jesse Fergusson, again proof of his lack of elite level.
Drew with Wilson, another poor performance
Lost to Holy and Lewis as he should, put up a close fight against a shabby Lewis, best career fight but still failed.
KO'd by Klitshko and Briggs as he should have been.
Defeated by Rossy. Not exactly first rate.
I'm sorry I see no HW steamroller.
I see a heavy solid tanker who hits hard and can take a lot of punches. I would consider him maybe in my top 20 if he was very lucky.
"Enough with the games mate! Your messing with the Grand Master!"
Lennox Lewis
I was the guy who thought Lewis lost the second Holy fight. I still feel that way. It was a close fight, so I'm not crying robbery, but in my opinion I liked Evanders ring generalship n the combos he landed. Lennox had his moments for sure, I just thought Evander controlled more of n did slightly better overall in that fight. I think many people hold the draw against Evander n remember that effort n not focusing in the second fight. Hands down Evander lost the first fight, only winning the third round in my opinion. Looking at the second fight by itself though, I had Evander winning.
Lewis when he was in the right mind set, could beat anybody I felt he beat Holyfield easy, as
for the Mercer fight I give Lewis the nod not a lot in it.
I thought Lewis won both the Mercer and Holyfield rematch. Close fights but had Lewis the winner. Plus Holyfield head butted Lewis all night and got away with it.
Saw the fight again and scored it 6-3-1 for Lewis.
